Critically-acclaimed author Chloe Sender is lost. Lost in an abusive past; lost within her fragmented mind. And she is lost within the pages of her own incomplete manuscript - a story she barely remembers writing that haunts her with every word, with every increasingly twisted sentence. Sleep-deprived and driven to complete the soul-destroying work, she begins to tear at the seams of her relationships. Her nightmares escalate in intensity and violence until she attempts to destroy the work for the sake of her sanity. But just outside her consciousness there is someone else - some thing else that will not be silenced. Shimmering at the periphery of her vision, capering through her nightmares and seeping into the pages of her manuscript, an ancient evil is in pursuit.

In 1989, Robert B. Oxnam, the successful China scholar and president of the Asia Society, faced up to what he thought was his biggest personal challenge: alcoholism. But this dependency masked a problem far more serious: Multiple Personality Disorder. At the peak of his professional career, after having led the Asia Society for nearly a decade, Oxnam was haunted by periodic blackouts and episodic rages. After his family and friends intervened, Oxnam received help from a psychiatrist, Dr. Jeffrey Smith, and entered a rehab center. It wasn't until 1990 during a session with Dr. Smith that the first of Oxnam's eleven alternate personalities--an angry young boy named Tommy--suddenly emerged. With Dr. Smith's help, Oxnam began the exhausting and fascinating process of uncovering his many personalities and the childhood trauma that caused his condition. This is the powerful and moving story of one person's struggle with this terrifying illness. The book includes an epilogue by Dr. Smith in which he describes Robert's case, the treatment, and the nature of multiple personality disorder. Robert's courage in facing his situation and overcoming his painful past makes for a dramatic and inspiring book.

Peru's Truth and Reconciliation Commission not only documented the political violence of the 1980s and 1990s but also gave Peruvians a unique opportunity to examine the causes and nature of that violence. In Art from a Fractured Past, scholars and artists expand on the commission's work, arguing for broadening the definition of the testimonial to include various forms of artistic production as documentary evidence. Their innovative focus on representation offers new and compelling perspectives on how Peruvians experienced those years and how they have attempted to come to terms with the memories and legacies of violence. Their findings about Peru offer insight into questions of art, memory, and truth that resonate throughout Latin America in the wake of "dirty wars" of the last half century. Exploring diverse works of art, including memorials, drawings, theater, film, songs, painted wooden retablos (three-dimensional boxes), and fiction, including an acclaimed graphic novel, the contributors show that art, not constrained by literal truth, can generate new opportunities for empathetic understanding and solidarity. Award-winning author Jonny Steinberg probes, with characteristic insight and empathy, the schisms, ironies and anomalies that continue to plague South African society. Join Steinberg as he meets a poverty-stricken old man who spends most of his state pension maintaining a black Mercedes Benz; as he comes to the conclusion that Thabo Mbeki is an Afro-pessimist; as he walks through Pollsmoor Prison on the eve of the invasion of Iraq and believes that he sees in the jail's corridors the reasons why America's impending war in the Middle East will fail; and as he chastises the Constitutional Court for trying so hard to be politically correct that it ends up entrenching the very AIDS stigma it sought to fight. For the past five years, Steinberg has been recording the events and situations, some of which are deeply disturbing, that he has witnessed on his travels across South Africa in his fortnightly column on Business Day's leader page. Here is the best of that journalism.

In The Material, the Real, and the Fractured Self, Susan Harrow explores the fascinating interrelation of subjectivity, materiality, and representation in the poetry and related texts of four modern French writers: Arthur Rimbaud, Guillaume Apollinaire, Francis Ponge, and Jacques Réda. She demonstrates the richness and the relevance of modern French poetry for today's readers, putting contemporary thought to work on the fractured self emerging in the post-Baudelairian lyric. Harrow addresses the widely perceived marginalization of poetry in the writing/theory debate, demonstrating that the emergence of a self at once shaped by and straining against material, historical, subjective, and cultural impediments reveals fertile relations between theory and poetry. Where purer forms of postmodernist thinking have stressed the dissolution and dispersal of the human subject, new approaches informed by cultural studies, autobiography theory, and gender studies work to recover fictions of experience and retrieve submerged narratives of the self. Probing the activity of textual self-recovery among the debris of history and fantasy, visuality and desire, and culture and corporeality, The Material, the Real, and the Fractured Self imparts something of the startling beauty and the raw urgency of poetry writing across the broad modern period.

Everyone has a dark thought now and then. But sometimes our dark thoughts have us. These thoughts are capable of great evil, but also redemption. Herein lies an even dozen dark tales, to be read with the lights low and the doors locked."Take the simple complexity of Mondrian, fill it with the passion of Klimt, the psychology of Munch, then look at it all through stereo-blind Rembrandt eyes and convert it into words; that's the best way I can think of to describe the darkly poetic writing of Martin Reaves." ~ Trent Zelazny, author of Too Late to Call Texas and Butterfly Potion.
