Season for Scandal

“A delightfully funny bit of holiday fare with a marriage of convenience between an audacious lady and a daring gentleman . . . Love and laughter ring.” —RT Book Reviews Jane Tindall has never had money of her own or exceptional beauty. Her gifts are more subtle: a mind like an abacus, a talent for play-acting—and a daring taste for gambling. But all the daring in the world can’t help with the cards fixed against her. And when Edmund Ware, Baron Kirkpatrick, unwittingly spoils her chance to win a fortune, her reputation is ruined too. Or so she thinks, until he suggests a surprising mode of escape: a hasty marriage. To him. On the surface, their wedding would satisfy all the demands of proper society, but as the Yuletide approaches, secrets and scandals turn this proper marriage into a very improper affair. “Both playful and profound, and has a subtle, stirring power that will affect you long after you’ve read the final page . . . Intricate, intimate, and remarkable.” —USA Today “Grabbed me immediately and had me tearing up by about a quarter of the way through. The characterization of the hero and heroine was excellent and the story was well-written with plenty of humor and wonderful dialogue along the way.” —All About Romance Praise for Season for Temptation “Hilarious and utterly adorable . . . Passionate and just plain fun.” —Courtney Milan, New York Times–bestselling author “Give in to temptation—treat yourself to Theresa Romain’s delightfully witty debut.” —Sally MacKenzie, USA Today–bestselling author

When scandal sweeps through London's ballrooms, Lord Elijah Stuart's younger brother is caught in its web. Though his main duty is to England's spymaster, Elijah must forsake his work searching for the traitor to the Crown and instead focus on weddings and reputations. With both the family honor and his brother's future at stake, Elijah dutifully takes the ruined Miss Josephina Pennyworth for his very reluctant bride. Furious at the circumstances leading her to be wed to the wrong Stuart brother, Josephina clashes immediately with her bossy new husband. She is every bit as invested in the search for the traitor as Lord Stuart and she is no shrinking violet when it comes to danger. While Josie discovers certain aspects of married life are quite pleasurable, she doesn't permit them to distract her from her mission. As she tests her husband's patience and the boundaries of her new life, the threat lurking in the shadows grows larger and places more lives in peril. Who among them will survive? **This book contains steamy scenes and the firm discipline of a sassy heroine when she requires it.

A Season of Ruin

Anna Bradley, author of A Wicked Way to Win an Earl, continues her Sutherland Scandals series with a tantalizing Regency romance filled with opulence, elegance, and forbidden desire... Lily Somerset’s plan for the London season is simple: courtship, marriage to a respectable gentleman, then the comfortable existence of a proper Lady. That is, until one tiny misstep leaves Lily on the edge of social ruin, forcing her to depend on a wicked rogue to save her reputation. Robyn Sutherland doesn’t save reputations—he sullies them. He'd rather be drawn and quartered than find himself spending the season as Lily's escort. But he has no choice but to stay until her tattered standing is mended. What begins as a ruse to deceive London soon flames into an uncontrollable passion. Robyn calls to the wild spirit that lurks beneath Lily’s prim exterior, and Lily awakens the hero’s heart within Robyn. But can these unlikely lovers trust themselves enough to let desire overrule reason?

Scandal on the South Side

The Black Sox Scandal is a cold case, not a closed case. When Eliot Asinof wrote his classic history about the fixing of the 1919 World Series, Eight Men Out, he told a dramatic story of undereducated and underpaid Chicago White Sox ballplayers, disgruntled by their low pay and poor treatment by team management, who fell prey to the wiles of double-crossing big-city gamblers offering them bribes to lose the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds. Shoeless Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver, Eddie Cicotte, and the other Black Sox players were all banned from organized baseball for life. But the real story is a lot more complex. We now have access to crucial information that changes what we thought we knew about “baseball’s darkest hour” — including rare film footage from that fateful fall classic, legal documents from the criminal and civil court proceedings, and accurate salary information for major-league players and teams. All of these new pieces to the Black Sox puzzle provide definitive answers to some old mysteries and raise other questions in their place. However, the Black Sox Scandal isn’t the only story worth telling about the 1919 Chicago White Sox. The team roster included three future Hall of Famers, a 20-year-old spitballer who would go on to win 300 games in the minor leagues, and even a batboy who later became a celebrity with the “Murderers’ Row” New York Yankees in the 1920s. All of their stories are included in Scandal on the South Side, which has full-life biographies on each of the 31 players who made an appearance for the White Sox in 1919, plus a comprehensive recap of Chicago’s pennant-winning season, the tainted World Series, and the sordid aftermath. This book isn’t a rewriting of Eight Men Out, but it is the complete story of everyone associated with the 1919 Chicago White Sox. The Society for American Baseball Research invites you to learn more about the Black Sox Scandal and the infamous team at the center of it all.
