Advances in Human Factors and Ergonomics in Healthcare and Medical Devices

This book is concerned with human factors and ergonomics research and developments in the design and use of systems and devices for effective and safe healthcare delivery. It reports on approaches for improving healthcare devices so that they better fit to people, including special population needs. It also covers assistive devices aimed at reducing occupational risks of health professionals as well as innovative strategies for error reduction, and more effective training and education methods for healthcare workers and professionals. Equal emphasis is given to digital technologies and to physical, cognitive and organizational aspects, which are considered in an integrated manner, so as to facilitate a systemic approach for improving the quality and safety of healthcare service. Advances in Specialist Hip Surgery

This book describes current and emerging techniques in hip surgery, providing the essential, up-to-date knowledge that will be required by the orthopaedic surgeon who plans to become a specialist hip surgeon. The opening chapter offers a concise overview of the surgical anatomy, with particular attention to details relevant to the surgical techniques outlined in the book. The increasingly popular anterior minimally invasive approach to the hip and a microinvasive variation of this approach are then described. Subsequent chapters present surgical approaches to developmental disorders of the hip, including dysplasia and femoroacetabular impingement, and promising hip preservation techniques for avascular necrosis of the hip – an often neglected but internationally relevant disease that can mutilate the hip in young patients. Respiratory Monitoring in Mechanical Ventilation

Mechanical ventilation nowadays remains the cornerstone in life saving in critically ill patients with and without respiratory failure. However, conclusive evidences show that mechanical ventilation can also cause lung damage, specifically, in terms of ventilator-induced lung injury. Respiratory monitoring encloses a series of physiological and pathophysiological measurements, from basic gas exchange and ventilator wave forms to more sophisticated diaphragm function and lung volume assessments. The progress of respiratory monitoring has always been accompanied by advances in technology. However, how to properly conduct the procedures and correctly interpret the data requires clear definition. The book introduces respiratory monitoring techniques and data analysis, including gas exchange, respiratory mechanics, thoracic imaging, lung volume measurement, and extra-vascular lung water measurement in the initial part. How to interpret the acquired and derived parameters and to illustrate their clinical applications is presented thoroughly. In the following part, the applications of respiratory monitoring in specific diseases and conditions is introduced, including acute respiratory distress syndrome, obstructive pulmonary diseases, patient-ventilator asynchrony, non-invasive ventilation, brain injury with increased intracranial pressure, ventilator-induced diaphragm dysfunction, and weaning from mechanical ventilation.
