Annual Report of the Commissioner of Railroads and Telegraphs for the Year 1870 Vol 2 of 2

Excerpt from Annual Report of the Commissioner of Railroads and Telegraphs, for the Year 1870, Vol. 2 of 2: Containing Returns of Railroad and Telegraph Companies of the State, for the Year Ending June 30th, 1870, With Tabulated Statements, Etc However, in illustration of the manner and extent of increase in the capital stock of many companies in the State, the following statements have been prepared as to the increase of the capital stock of the Cleve land, Painesville and Ashtabula, Cleveland and Toledo, and Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati Railroad Companies, over the amount originally fixed by charter - the increase having been made from time to time, doubtless, in strict accordance with legislative provisions. In these state ments the original amount of capital, as fixed in the charters of the com panics respectively, is given, and the various subsequent increases added, the increases by and Subsequent to consolidations being pro rated to the original companies composing the consolidated company. The statements may not be strictly accurate, but are sufficiently so to illustrate the subject, and to call attention to the facility with which capi tal stock may be increased from time to time, according to law, and the power given to the Legislature, by the charters or the act of February to revise rates may be entirely defeated. [see section 12 of said act, page 19, vol. I.] Whether these several increases have inured to the benefit of the original stock, or to what extent, can only be known to the stockholders themselves. By the same rule, adopted in the three cases given, the increase or de crease of the stock of any company in the State can be ascertained from the history. And present amount of stock reported, found in volume one of this report. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Eleventh Annual Report of the Commissioner of Railroads and Telegraphs to the Governor of the State of Ohio

Excerpt from Eleventh Annual Report of the Commissioner of Railroads and Telegraphs to the Governor of the State of Ohio: For the Year Ending June 30, 1877 To the Hon. Thomas L. Young, Governor of Ohio: Sir: I have the honor to submit herewith the eleventh annual report of this department. The aim has been to make it a full and accurate exhibit of the condition and affairs of the several companies having lines of railway within the State at the close of the year ending June 30, and also to show the extent of the traffic, earnings, and operations for the year. To that end the returns made have been subjected to critical examination and comparison, the separate items being carefully verified wherever practicable. The tabulations from returns received, given in the appendix, will aid in a comparison of the length, equipment, and cost of the several lines, the earnings thereon, with the expenses and results of operating. The capital stock, other liabilities, and assets of each company are also given. These tables are followed by copies of the required reports made to this office by the several companies owning the lines, and of the supplemental reports of operating made by lessees where a road is not operated by the company. A brief summary of the leading items shown by the reports made for the year ending June 30, 1877, as compared with those of the year preceding, shows the following results: The aggregate length of main line and branches, 8,292.52 miles, is an increase of 290.21 miles. The earnings and traffic reported were upon 8,064.86 miles, which is 200.81 miles greater length than operated year previous. The net gain in length of line within the State for the year was 259.82 miles; for 1876 it was 58 miles. Number of passengers carried, 16,995,589, is a falling off, deducting the Marietta, Pittsburg and Cleveland, not reporting, and five suburban lines not included this year, of 681,063. Freight tonnage was 30,338,004, an increase of 990,205 tons. The gross earnings of operated line, $58,095,489.87, is a decrease in amount of $5,165,650.76.
