Approaching the Mystery of Golgotha

In September, the Foundation Stone for the Goetheanum was laid in Dornach. The ground for Anthroposophy as we know it today was established. Such is the background for the remarkable lectures contained in this volume.

The Culture of Selflessness

In a lecture eight weeks before the outbreak of World War I, Rudolf Steiner, conscious of developments to come, coined the phrase "culture of selflessness" to describe the culture that would develop in the future. The far-reaching social implications of his primarily Christological lectures on the Fifth Gospel, given in 1913/14 under the same political circumstances, were foreign to many of Steiners contemporary audiences, who largely failed to understand his dramatic accounts drawn from the Fifth Gospel (or that gospel itself) as a "source of comfort" for the future, or (as Rudolf Steiner said of them) as "needed" for future work.

The Archangel Michael

Steiner described the ascent of Michael as cosmic ruler, his battle with the "dragon" of the spirits of darkness, and his roles as the countenance of Christ and the guardian of cosmic intelligence. Speaking on behalf of Michael, Steiner laid out the essentials for a new Michaelic path to full humanity. An important source for today's political, social, psychological, and spiritual crises.

Building Stones for an Understanding of the Mystery of Golgotha

’If one is unable to conceive of the Christ mystery as a true reality, one also cannot develop any ideas and concepts relating to the rest of world existence that are imbued with reality, which really penetrate to the truth ’. – Rudolf Steiner In a series of 17 lectures, Rudolf Steiner throws new light on the historical background and esoteric meaning of what he refers to as the central event of human and earthly history: the Christ mystery or ‘the Mystery of Golgotha’. Basing his commentaries on personal spiritual research, Steiner emphasizes the key nature of the Mystery of Golgotha, through which ‘...something was accomplished which has to do not with the moral order alone but with the whole world-order in its entirety’. This relates to a transformation of the spiritual environment of the earth and a potentially radical change in human consciousness. Building on the core themes of this course, Steiner presents a variety of fascinating topics, including: original sin and the idea of resurrection; faith and knowledge; the nature of sleep and the riddle of fatigue; the violation of the mysteries by the Roman Emperors; the teachings of Mani and Augustine; our relationship to the dead in spiritualistic séances; and the correspondence between the Platonic year, a day in a person’s life and a human life-time. Although first delivered to audiences a century ago, these lectures have lost none of their resonance; indeed, their essential message is perhaps more relevant than ever. They are published here in a new translation and for the first time in a complete English edition. 'So let us endeavour to make spiritual science our own not merely as a teaching but as a language, and then wait until we find the questions in this language that we may address to Christ. He will answer, yes He will answer!’

Universal Spirituality and Human Physicality

In this exceptional series of lectures, Rudolf Steiner speaks in scientific detail about the connection of the subtle aspects of human nature - our soul and spirit - to our physical constitution. At the heart of this course are the well-loved 'Bridge' lectures, which appear in English for the first time in their wider context. Steiner discusses the solid, fluid, air and warmth bodies, and how these are connected with the various ethers, the 'I' and human blood. He goes on to describe how ideals and ideas impact the various aspects of the human constitution - how morality is a source of 'world creativity' - with moral thinking imbuing life into substance and will.

Lord of the Elements

The four classical elements of earth, water, air and fire are present in Genesis and continue to be significant throughout Christianity. Different streams of thought, such as the School of Chartres, and Celtic Christianity, have emphasised them in different ways. In this unique book, Bastiaan Baan, an experienced spiritual thinker, brings these elements together with ideas from Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophy. He considers, in particular, how elemental beings -- nature spirits -- relate to the four elements, and explores the role of elemental beings in our world. This is a fascinating and original work on the connections between Christianity and the natural world.

The Heavenly Sophia and the Being Anthroposophia

Based on the author's experience of the suprasensory being behind spiritual science (Anthroposophy), this volume is the culmination of Sergei Prokofieff's twenty-five years of work on Rudolf Steiner's spiritual impulse. He shows that the being Anthroposophia is not merely a poetic image or an abstract concept, but an actual spiritual entity who works in the higher worlds to benefit earthly evolution and bring to humanity "the new revelation of the heavenly Sophia, the divine wisdom." In the first part of the book, Prokofieff describes the path that led him to experience the being Anthroposophia--a path that is clearly outlined so that it can be followed by the reader as well. In the second part, beginning with Steiner's relatively few statements on the subject, the author considers the position of the living Anthroposophia in the cosmic hierarchy--specifically her relationship to Christ, to the heavenly Sophia, and the to Archangel Michael. Finally available in paperback, this work will be of special interest to all those who have a close connection to Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophy.

The Reappearance of Christ in the Etheric

The first chapter of the Acts of the Apostles describes Christ's Ascension: "And a cloud received him out of their sight." As the disciples looked up, two angels appeared and told them, "This same Jesus, taken up from you into heaven, shall come again in the same way as you have seen him go." In 1910, Rudolf Steiner began a series of lectures announcing the advent of Christ's appearance in the sphere of the earth's etheric or life body. At first, he said, only a few will be aware of it, but in time more and more people--regardless of religious affiliation--will be strengthened, comforted and infused by the Christ's living presence. Such "Damascus experiences," bespeaking a new natural clairvoyance, Steiner argues, will become increasingly common. "The Christ will become a living comforter," he writes. "However strange it may seem, it is nevertheless true that often when people, even in considerable numbers, are sitting together not knowing what to do and waiting, they will see the etheric Christ. He will be there, will confer with them, and will cast his word in such gatherings. We are now approaching these times..." This collection contains Steiner's lectures on this theme, as well as on important related questions, such spiritual science and etheric vision, the etheric vision of the future, "the etherization of the blood," the Sermon on the Mount and the land of Shambhala, the mysteries of comets and the Moon, Buddhism and Pauline Christianity, spirit beings and the ground of the world, and the three realms between death and rebirth. The Reappearance of Christ in the Etheric collects much of Rudolf Steiner's most important discussions of esoteric Christianity, especially as it relates to the central place of the Christ being in world and human evolution.

The Cycle of the Year as a Path of Initiation

In ancient times humanity possessed an innate knowledge of the spiritual foundations of existence. Such knowledge could be acquired through inwardly accompanying the cycle of the year and its connected great seasonal festivals. But this instinctive knowledge had to be lost in order for human beings to discover individual freedom. In our time, as Sergei O. Prokofieff demonstrates in this comprehensive work, ‘... this knowledge must be found anew through the free, light-filled consciousness of the fully developed human personality’. Tracing the spiritual path of the yearly cycle, Prokofieff penetrates to the deeper esoteric realities of the seven Christian festivals of Michaelmas, Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, Ascension, Whitsun and St John’s Tide. Basing his research on the work of the twentieth-century initiate Rudolf Steiner, he reveals how these festivals are spiritual facts that exist independently of religious traditions and cultural customs. Working with the festivals in an esoteric sense can provide a true path of initiation, ultimately enabling an experience of the Being of the Earth, Christ. The journey of study through this book can thus lead the reader to an experience of the modern Christian-Rosicrucian path, along which ‘... it is possible to take the first steps towards life in partnership with the course of cosmic existence’.

The Arcana of the Grail Angel

Seldom in modern esoteric Christian scholarship do we find an author with the breadth of understanding to encompass the Eastern, Central and Western Grail traditions. John Barnwell, in The Arcana of the Grail Angel, synthesizes and illuminates the Grail tradition in the light of modern Spiritual Science and the works of its founder Rudolf Steiner. Steiner's Western esoteric stream of Christianity creates a backdrop of historical, philosophical, and religious archetypes that encompass the most comprehensive esoteric Christian Cosmology available. Add to this an extensive panoramic view of the historical, allegorical, and spiritual nature of the Grail, and together we find this refreshing work -- and immediately recognize a must read Anthroposophical classic like the works of Guenther Wachsmuth or Sergei O. Prokofieff. -- Douglas J. Gabriel, from the forward.

Illness and Healing

After she received the stigmata, Judith von Halle began vividly to perceive the events that occurred at the time of Christ. These continuing experiences are not visions, but rather an actual participation - involving all human senses - in the events themselves. To complement this personal witnessing of Christ's life, von Halle has researched the facts using spiritual-scientific methods, based on a fully conscious crossing of the spiritual threshold by the human 'I'. Combining the results, she explores here, in her continuing series Approaches to Understanding the Christ Event, the nature of illnesses at the time of Christ as described in the Gospels, and how He set about healing them. The Gospels conceal untapped treasures which can only be brought to light by deciphering their inherently pictorial language. By developing a spiritual-scientific mode of thinking we can create the foundation for examining the causes and cures of illness. The author explains the meaning of certain phrases and passages in the Gospels, translating them from their metaphorical form into modern language. She also reveals why illnesses at the time of Christ were different from medical disorders of today, and studies the nature and causes of modern illnesses.

Death as Metamorphosis of Life

Several lectures deal primarily with aspects of life after death. The first describes the three realms after earthly life: that of intense, surging sensation (sympathy and antipathy); that of the ebb and flow of will impulses that stream into the human sphere, affecting in increasingly wider circles human life on earth (karmic relationships, animal existence); and that of the spiritual hierarchies. The following lectures amplify this mission in different ways, explicitly and implicitly.

The Influences of Lucifer and Ahriman

In these lectures, Steiner focuses on the vital task of developing the proper orientation toward a free spiritual life.

May Human Beings Hear It

Although this is major work of some length, the individual chapters of May Human Beings Hear It! are complete in themselves, and can therefore be studied independently of each other.

May Human Beings Hear It

During the Christmas period of 1923-4, Rudolf Steiner refounded the Anthroposophical Society at its headquarters in Dornach, Switzerland. This important event, which has come to be known as the Christmas Conference, can be studied on many levels, and its many mysteries have been central to Sergei O. Prokofieff's anthroposophical research over the years. His beginning point has been an enduring question: What did Rudolf Steiner mean when he called the Christmas Conference the ‘start of a World-Turning-point of Time’? In this far-reaching work, the author – working from several different viewpoints - guides the reader towards an answer. Prokofieff suggests that the impulse of the Christmas Conference can only be reenlivened today through conscious action by individuals to experience its spiritual essence. Rather than offering dogmatic conclusions, he opens up paths of approaching this goal by throwing light on different aspects of the Conference and what lies at its heart: the Foundation Stone and its Meditation. In particular, Prokofieff explores three key perspectives: the connection of the Christmas Conference with humanity’s evolution; the inner relationship of each individual anthroposophist to the Christmas Conference; and the significance of the Conference to Rudolf Steiner himself. Although this is major work of some length, the individual chapters of May Human Beings Hear It! are complete in themselves, and can therefore be studied independently of each other.
