Sensuous Surfaces

With Sensuous Surfaces, Jonathan Hay offers one of the most richly illustrated and in-depth introductions to the decorative arts of Ming and Qing dynasty China to date. Examining an immense number of works, he explores the materials and techniques, as well as the effects of patronage and taste, that together have formed a loose system of informal rules that define the decorative arts in early modern China. Hay demonstrates how this system—by engaging the actual and metaphorical potential of surface—guided the production and use of decorative arts from the late sixteenth century through the middle of the nineteenth, a period of explosive growth. He shows how the understanding of decorative arts made a fundamental contribution to the sensory education of China’s early modern urban population. Enriching his study with 280 color plates, he ultimately offers an elegant meditation, not only on Ming and Qing art but on the importance of the erotic in the form and function of decorations of all eras.

How were Chinese pots made, glazed and fired? Why did China discover porcelain more than 1,000 years before the West? What are the effects of China's influence on world ceramics? These questions (and many more) are answered in this history of Chinese ceramic technology, from the late Stone Age to the twenty-first century AD. The non-specialist reader will appreciate its unique coverage of research materials originally published in several languages.

European Porcelain in The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Porcelain imported from China was the most highly coveted new medium in sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Europe. Its pure white color, translucency, and durability, as well as the delicacy of decoration, were impossible to achieve in European earthenware and stoneware. In response, European ceramic factories set out to discover the process of producing porcelain in the Chinese manner, with significant artistic, technical, and commercial ramifications for Britain and the Continent. Indeed, not only artisans, but kings, noble patrons, and entrepreneurs all joined in the quest, hoping to gain both prestige and profit from the enterprises they established. This beautifully illustrated volume showcases ninety works that span the late sixteenth to the mid-nineteenth century and reflect the major currents of European porcelain production. Each work is illustrated with glorious new photography, accompanied by analysis and interpretation by one of the leading experts in European decorative arts. Among the wide range of porcelains selected are rare blue-and-white wares and figures from Italy, superb examples from the Meissen factory in Germany and the Sèvres factory in France, and ceramics produced by leading British eighteenth-century artisans. Taken together, they reveal why the Metropolitan Museum’s holdings in this field are among the finest in the world. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana}

The World in Monochromes

Since the Oriental Ceramic Society was established in 1921 it has organised a number of exhibitions which have comprised, wholly or in part, material from the collections of its members. Coming into the 21st century, the Society decided to stage a series of exhibitions taking as their these the decorative techniques applied to Asian ceramics. The first of these exhibitions was held in 2003 and was shown in three venues--in London, Bath and Glasgow. This exhibition tackled the subject of underglaze cobalt blue decoration and was called The World in Blue and White. The second in the series was held in 2006 and examined ceramics with polychrome decoration, whether applied directly to the unfired ceramic body or slip, or applied over an already fired glaze. This exhibition was called The World in Colours, and, like the current exhibition was held at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, in their Brunei Gallery.--preface

This sumptuous volume accompanies a traveling exhibition of the same name that opens at Winterthur in February 2005. The full-color volume highlights 117 exquisite export porcelain objects from the extensive Leo and Doris Hodroff Collection at Winterthur. Authors Ron Fuchs and David Howard ground their presentation with an introductory overview of the manufacture of porcelain, the history of the china trade, and the importance of export porcelain in European and American history and material culture. Individual entries are grouped according to function: dining wares, drinking wares, household and personal utensils, and decorative wares. Each grouping is preceded by a short essay that places the objects within a historic context. An illustrated appendix addresses the coats of arms found on many of the objects, and an extensive bibliography offers supplementary readings.
