​Imaging Brain Diseases illustrates in a unique way the most common diseases affecting the human nervous system using different imaging modalities derived from radiology, nuclear medicine, and neuropathology. The features of the diseases are visualized on computerized tomography (CT)-scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-scans, nuclear medicine scans, surgical intraoperative as well as gross-anatomy and histology preparations. For each disease entity, the structural changes are illustrated in a correlative comparative way based on the various imaging techniques. The brain diseases are presented in a systematic way allowing the reader to easily find the topics in which she or he is particularly interested. In Part 1 of the book, the imaging techniques are described in a practical, straightforward way. The morphological built-up of the normal human brain and its vascular supply are presented in Part 2. The chapters of the subsequent Parts 3 to 10 deal with the following diseases involving the nervous system including: hemodynamic, vascular, infectious, neurodegenerative, demyelination, epilepsy, trauma and intoxication, and tumors. The authors incite the clinician to see the cell, the tissue, the organ, the disorder by enabling him to recognize brain lesions or interpreting histologic findings and to correlate this knowledge with molecular biologic concepts. Thus, this book bridges the gap between neuro-clinicians, neuro-imagers and neuro-pathologists. This issue is very important for basic science and for therapeuthic approach as well. In order to review and discuss the place of free radicals in psychiatry and neurology, a joint meeting was initiated by the World Health Organization and the Fondation Ipsen in Paris on June 17-18,1991. This book contains the papers presented during this meeting. Although the papers included in this volume have been produced in the framework of WHO/Fondation Ipsen review of knowledge about free radicals and brain disorders, they express the views of the individual authors rather than a consensus of the participants at the meeting. Childhood CNS vasculitis is a newly recognized disease entity, which can occur in isolation as a primary disorder – childhood primary angiitis of the CNS (cPACNS)–or secondary to systemic diseases. Since early initiation of treatment is associated with improved disease outcome, rapid evaluation and timely diagnosis are essential. The clinical presentation can be highly variable. Children present with newly acquired focal and/or diffuse neurological deficits and/or psychiatric symptoms. Inflammatory markers and CSF analysis are essential, but show limited sensitivity and specificity. MRI studies are highly sensitive for areas of focal inflammation, however lack specificity. Negative MRI studies do not exclude inflammatory brain disease. Angiography is the key diagnostic modality for large to medium vessel cPACNS. Characteristic angiographic findings include segmental cerebral vessel stenoses and corresponding contrast enhancement in the vessel wall. In children with normal angiography, confirmation of small vessel cPACNS requires brain biopsy. A thorough diagnostic evaluation for cPACNS should include a workup for causes of secondary CNS vasculitis, evaluation for CNS vasculitis mimics, and analysis of markers of nonvasculitic inflammatory brain diseases when appropriate. Early recognition with timely treatment of childhood CNS vasculitis can significantly alter the course of this potentially devastating disease.
