Handbook of Cardiac Anatomy Physiology and Devices

A revolution began in my professional career and education in 1997. In that year, I visited the University of Minnesota to discuss collaborative opportunities in cardiac anatomy, physiology, and medical device testing. The meeting was with a faculty member of the Department of Anesthesiology, Professor Paul Iaizzo. I didn’t know what to expect but, as always, I remained open minded and optimistic. Little did I know that my life would never be the same. . . . During the mid to late 1990s, Paul Iaizzo and his team were performing anesthesia research on isolated guinea pig hearts. We found the work appealing, but it was unclear how this research might apply to our interest in tools to aid in the design of implantable devices for the cardiovascular system. As discussions progressed, we noted that we would be far more interested in reanimation of large mammalian hearts, in particular, human hearts. Paul was confident this could be accomplished on large hearts, but thought that it would be unlikely that we would ever have access to human hearts for this application. We shook hands and the collaboration was born in 1997. In the same year, Paul and the research team at the University of Minnesota (including Bill Gallagher and Charles Soule) reanimated several swine hearts. Unlike the previous work on guinea pig hearts which were reanimated in Langendorff mode, the intention of this research was to produce a fully functional working heart model for device testing and cardiac research.

Heart Failure An Issue of Cardiology Clinics

Over 5.7 million people in America carry a diagnosis of heart failure, the incidence of which approaches 1 in 100 people over the age of 65. The cost to society is estimated at $29 billion annually and over 1.1 million hospital admissions. For hospitalized heart failure patients, the 30-day readmission rate approaches 25%. As our population ages these numbers are expected to grow. This issue of Cardiology Clinics helps practitioners to manage patients at all ACC/AHA stages of heart failure and addresses key issues that include sudden cardiac death, arrhythmias, acute decompensated heart failure, and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Principles and Practice of Cardiac Magnetic Resonance in Congenital Heart Disease

CMR is a powerful tool in the armamentarium of pediatric cardiology and health care workers caring for patients with congenital heart disease (CHD), but a successful study still presents major technical and clinical challenges. This text was created to give trainees, practitioners, allied professionals, and researchers a repository of dependable information and images to base their use of CMR on. Because CHD presents an intricate web of connections and associations that need to be deciphered, the imager performing CMR needs to understand not only anatomy, physiology, function, and surgery for CHD, but also the technical aspects of imaging. Written by experts from the world’s leading institutions, many of whom pioneered the techniques and strategies described, the text is organized in a logical way to provide a complete understanding of the issues involved. It is divided into three main parts: The Basics of CMR - familiarizes the reader with the minimum tools needed to understand the basics, such as evaluating morphology, ventricular function, and utilizing contrast agents CMR of Congenital and Acquired Pediatric Heart Disease - discusses broad categories of CHD and the use of CMR in specific disease states Special Topics in Pediatric Cardiac MR - covers other important areas such as the complementary role of CT scanning, interventional CMR, the role of the technologist in performing a CMR exam, and more With the ever increasing sophistication of technology, more can be done with CMR in a high quality manner in a shorter period of time than had been imagined as recently as just a few years ago. Principles and Practice of Cardiac Magnetic Resonance in Congenital Heart Disease: Form, Function, and Flow makes a major contribution to applying these techniques to improved patient care. An ideal introduction for the novice or just the curious, this reference will be equally useful to the seasoned practitioner who wants to keep pace with developments in the field and would like a repository of information and images readily availalble.

Essential Cardiology

The very rapid advances in technology have caused a revolution in Nursing practice in the last ten years. We are now only twelve years from the first description of permanent cardiac pacing. This is now an accepted method of treatment throughout the world. Bedside monitoring with oscilloscopes has passed from being an experimental investigation to normal ward practice. This rapid invasion has involved technicians and nursing staff in matters which until comparatively recently were regarded as the province of the Specialist Doctor. This book is intended primarily to give an introduction to the subject to nurses and technicians concerned with Intensive Care techniques. It is hoped it may also be of interest to Medical Students as an introduction to the subject and also as a review to those preparing for examinations. Sheffield, September 1972. David Verel Introduction About one third of deaths today are due to disease of the heart and circulation. This alone would justify a special study of them by nurses and doctors. They are of particular importance to nurses, however, as there is no other group of diseases where quick informed action by a nurse in an emergency, can save so many lives. In this book the functions of the heart and circulation are first described. There follows a brief account of the diseases of the heart, and finally, intensive coronary care and intensive post-operative care are dealt with in some detail.

The Open Heart Club

This absorbing and poignant book is not merely the story of one writer's flawed heart.

The Open Heart Club

This absorbing and poignant book is not merely the story of one writer's flawed heart. It is a history of cardiac medicine, a candid personal journey, and a profound reflection on mortality. Born in 1966 with a congenital heart defect known as the tetralogy of Fallot, Gabriel Brownstein entered the world just as doctors were learning to operate on conditions like his. He received a life-saving surgery at five years old, and since then has ridden wave after wave of medical innovation, a series of interventions that have kept his heart beating. The Open Heart Club is both a memoir of a life on the edge of medicine's reach and a history of the remarkable people who have made such a life possible. It begins with the visionary anatomists of the seventeenth century, tells the stories of the doctors (all women) who invented pediatric cardiology, and includes the lives of patients and physicians struggling to understand the complexities of the human heart. The Open Heart Club is a riveting work of compassionate storytelling, a journey into the dark hinterlands between sickness and health lit by bright moments of humor and inspiration.

Marriage Cardiology 101

Author and Iraq Veteran’s discovery of Marriage Heart Trouble In America that’s taking marriages by storm. This author inspires readers through his wife’s heart attack and revelation from God regarding heart trouble upon the marriage. Author and Minister Jeffery Mathews as a Bronze Star Iraq war veteran has experienced troubled nights and days. What allowed him to endure the battle was his faith in God. One night chest pains came upon my wife and turned to trouble. The cardiologist said your wife has suffered a major heart attack. The life I knew of a wonderful marriage went dark temporarily. Through faith much prayer and a mighty God our marriage went from darkness to light. The spirit of the Lord revealed to me through my wife that many marriages are experiencing spiritual chest pains. The Lord revealed if many don’t see the doctor (Jesus Christ) marriage heart attack is at the door. This heart attack can lead to death of the marriage. Many marriages are in a dark place due to blockages in the arteries of their marriage. I discovered that marriage is a major heart issue. My wife recovery went very well upon following the doctor’s commands. I want my readers to know that marriage when Christ is the center is mighty and powerful. I have seen the hand of God over the heart of my wife and the heart of our marriage. Our purpose now is to encourage marriages that they must have an experience with God. We desire also to bring awareness to women of human heart diseases that is on the rise in America and abroad. Hear our story of our only child and daughter of no known medical issues dies at the age of 39 from cardiac arrest.
