Thriving in Times of Increasing Change Never before have organizations faced an environment as turbulent and as difficult as this one. Businesses must change the way they are doing business now to a new way that will work for them in the future. While major organizational change was once the exception, it is now the rule . . . and organizations will have to be very good at organizational change to thrive in the new business environment. Profound changes are on the way Todays businesses are bracing for change. Waves of regulatory requirements are coming in increasing amounts and intensity. Competition is more intense and coming from every direction. Customers no longer will settle for yesterdays products, services, or levels of quality. Things are challenging out there, and businesses can no longer simply hunker down and weather the storm. Many predict that todays storm is tomorrows business environment, an environment in which we must be able to thrive . . . or die. Adding to the assault, many business leaders are shocked at how much change is likely to be required in such a short period of time. No longer is it a question of if or when huge waves of change will hit, its a matter of how well organizations are positioned to effectively navigate and even flourish in the changes. Waves of change are already hitting the beach, and their strength is almost certain to build. Its too late for a bunker mentality. Out of the bunkers and into . . . what? Companies cannot stay in their bunkers forever. Sooner or later they must come out and face the music. That means they must come out and change the way they do business in order to fit into the turbulent world. Change is no longer an option but change the way they do business to what? Companies coming out have two options; options that are as different as night and day. Surviving: The intuitively-obvious way The focus of doing business just to survive is logical and intuitively obvious. It has companies adopting and/or adapting survival tactics as the core of their new way. They limit the changes they make to just get over the survival threshold. Process changes are most likely very conservative: patches, glue-ons, work-arounds, tweaks, fix and repair rather than replace, emergency repairs rather than preventive maintenance, etc. all pursued in an atmosphere of severe cost cutting and staffing layoffs. While risk management may be a goal, survival-oriented companies try to dodge every risk regardless of the risk-rewards, taking away almost all of their undeveloped opportunities that might be sources of new life for the company. Unfortunately, the slogan of this new way of doing business might be out of the frying pan and into the fire. Thriving: The straight and narrow way The focus of this new way of doing business will be positioning the organization so that it will thrive . . . even in a nasty business environment. The first step in moving toward a thriving business will be to set a vision that is designed to separate the company from the middle-of-the-road pack of competitors. This way of doing business will require the company to improve all work processes that could translate into a competitive edge. Processes must be advanced beyond best practices to an industry leading position. This way of doing business calls for investment in the best available technology that enables the companys core processes, in equipment upgrades where possible, expansion of employee responsibilities, provision of aggressive training on key skills that support core work processes, and more. All of these actions will require energy and resources as the straight and narrow way calls for an investment and opportunity mindset. However, the largest investment will need to be in innovation not innovation you pay for but innovation from
The book identifies four levels of thriving: global - our place in the planet; societal - place, communities, economies; interpersonal - our relationships; intrapersonal - the self.

Every generation faces challenges, but never before have young people been so aware of theirs. Whether due to school strikes for climate change, civil war, or pandemic lockdowns, almost every child in the world has experienced the interruption of their schooling by outside forces. When the world we have taken for granted proves so unstable, it gives rise to the question: what is schooling for? Thrive advocates a new purpose for education, in a rapidly changing world, and analyses the reasons why change is urgently needed in our education systems. The book identifies four levels of thriving: global - our place in the planet; societal - place, communities, economies; interpersonal - our relationships; intrapersonal - the self. Chapters provide research-based theoretical evidence for each area, followed by practical international case studies showing how individual schools are addressing these considerable challenges. Humanity's challenges are shifting fast: schools need to be a part of the response.
Employees, faced with these rapid and often undesirable changes, need help — and so do the organizations they work for.

Due to the economic crisis, organizations are accelerating the dramatic changes they're making in the way they run their businesses. Employees, faced with these rapid and often undesirable changes, need help — and so do the organizations they work for. If change is going to be a constant in people’s lives and the number and type of changes are going to happen faster, it is imperative that people develop the ability to live in this constantly changing world without feeling like victims, but rather like partners in the changes they face. Change Better is about how to develop the critical skills and tools necessary to cope with change at work and in one's personal life. These skills and the tools that go with them help people gain control over the changes in their lives. Jeanenne LaMarsh shows the ways in which readers can help themselves to change and the ways in which they will be able to accept, deal with, and maximize change with the greatest speed and least pain.
The counterintuitive approach to achieving your true potential, heralded by the Harvard Business Review as a groundbreaking idea of the year. The path to personal and professional fulfillment is rarely straight.

#1 Wall Street Journal Best Seller USA Today Best Seller Amazon Best Book of the Year The counterintuitive approach to achieving your true potential, heralded by the Harvard Business Review as a groundbreaking idea of the year. The path to personal and professional fulfillment is rarely straight. Ask anyone who has achieved his or her biggest goals or whose relationships thrive and you’ll hear stories of many unexpected detours along the way. What separates those who master these challenges and those who get derailed? The answer is agility—emotional agility. Emotional agility is a revolutionary, science-based approach that allows us to navigate life’s twists and turns with self-acceptance, clear-sightedness, and an open mind. Renowned psychologist Susan David developed this concept after studying emotions, happiness, and achievement for more than twenty years. She found that no matter how intelligent or creative people are, or what type of personality they have, it is how they navigate their inner world—their thoughts, feelings, and self-talk—that ultimately determines how successful they will become. The way we respond to these internal experiences drives our actions, careers, relationships, happiness, health—everything that matters in our lives. As humans, we are all prone to common hooks—things like self-doubt, shame, sadness, fear, or anger—that can too easily steer us in the wrong direction. Emotionally agile people are not immune to stresses and setbacks. The key difference is that they know how to adapt, aligning their actions with their values and making small but powerful changes that lead to a lifetime of growth. Emotional agility is not about ignoring difficult emotions and thoughts; it’s about holding them loosely, facing them courageously and compassionately, and then moving past them to bring the best of yourself forward. Drawing on her deep research, decades of international consulting, and her own experience overcoming adversity after losing her father at a young age, David shows how anyone can thrive in an uncertain world by becoming more emotionally agile. To guide us, she shares four key concepts that allow us to acknowledge uncomfortable experiences while simultaneously detaching from them, thereby allowing us to embrace our core values and adjust our actions so they can move us where we truly want to go. Written with authority, wit, and empathy, Emotional Agility serves as a road map for real behavioral change—a new way of acting that will help you reach your full potential, whoever you are and whatever you face.

The future of New Zealand's rural communities is often in the news. Empty shops, depopulation and lack of jobs are offered as signs that many towns are dying. However, the strength of social ties and development of digital technologies, the innovations in rural entrepreneurship and the functioning informal economy suggest that some rural communities are in good health. There is no getting away from the challenges to the rural sector. But rural communities have shown themselves to be resilient over many years, and that is likely to continue. Most importantly, people in rural communities, in townships and on farms, have options. This important book, based on years of research, shows how, and provides useful insights into, the ongoing process of change in rural communities and the resources on which they draw to support their resilience. It offers a positive message and some blueprints for progress.

From the authors of the #1 New York Times best seller Designing Your Life ("Life has questions. They have answers" --The NYT)--a job-changing, outlook-changing, life-changing book that shows us how to transform our work lives and create a dream job that is meaningful without necessarily changing the job we have. Dysfunctional Belief: I'm stuck in a lousy situation (and there's nothing I can do about it). Reframe: I'm stuck in a lousy situation (and I'm finding the problems and the solutions). Bill Burnett and Dave Evans successfully taught graduate and undergraduate students at Stanford University and readers of their best-selling book, Designing Your Life ("The prototype for a happy life." --Brian Lehrer, NPR), that designers don't analyze, worry, think, complain their way forward; they build their way forward. In Designing Your Work Life, Burnett and Evans show us how design thinking can transform our present job and our experience of work in general by utilizing the designer mindsets: Curiosity. Reframing. Radical collaboration. Awareness. Bias to action. Storytelling. Dysfunctional Belief: Good enough isn't good enough. Reframe: Good enough is GREAT--for now. Burnett and Evans show us how, with tools, tips, and ideas, to enjoy what we have and to live in a state of "good enough, for now," one of the strongest, most effective reframes there is, and how this idea, once understood and accepted, can make new possibilities available, giving us the energy to enjoy the present moment and allowing us to begin to prototype possible futures. And if we want to quit? Burnett and Evans show us how to use the job we have to get the job we want (in another company), and show us as well, the art and science of quitting (leave the campsite better than we found it), using the power of the quit design to reframe how we finish our current job and get a better one. They write, as well, about how the work world is changing as the automation of work increases (hello Alexa, artificial intelligence, drones, and robots); how thinking like a designer can make us flexible, and ready to adapt to change . . .
