Survival of a Texan

At supper time, when the small restaurant was very busy, people stood in line waiting for service. The Chinese owner and family were busy waiting on customers. I would lay my papers aside and start washing dishes in the back.

Survival of a Texan

SURVIVAL OF A TEXAN Before the days of McDonalds, Best Western and affordable telephones, two sets of Grandparents, not knowing of the other’s plans, set out on a 75 mile trip by horse and buggy, to await the arrival of an expected Grandchild. It was a three day journey. They slept under the buggies at night on quilts placed on top of tarpaulins. The father of the expected baby was caught in a fierce “Blue Norther” while trying to get a doctor. Despite the dilemma, a baby Boy was born. He was an adventurous little boy intent on working for money at an early age. His Dad was generally a loving father but became abusive when he was drinking hard liquor. Billy Boy took on the responsibility of the support of the family at an early age. He bought his first house at the age of twelve and remodeled it with a little help. At the age of 18 {actually 17} he went off to war where he was critically wounded twice on the same day and was given the Last Rites. A bullet entered below his right ear exploded in his mouth and a part of his right check was blown away. He was in a fierce battle in the retaking of Manila. A freighter, which was converted to a hospital ship, was transporting Bill and others from Leyte to Hollandia, New Guinea. It was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine and the crippled ship moved on slowly toward Hollandia, NG. The submarine was obliterated by a US Navy escort. Bill was “Born Again” in a foxhole. His faith in Jesus has carried him through the rough times and personal tragedies. You must read this fascinating book of Bill’s unusual and eventful life.

This is an intermediate-level course in written Chinese that employs a revolutionary new method designed to have you quickly reading and writing simple, connected Chinese sentences. The Basic Chinese and Intermediate Chinese books provide separate but integrated "tracks" to help you learn to speak, read, and write Chinese efficiently at your own pace. Some students and teachers wish to emphasize speaking ability first, whereas others wish to focus on learning to speak, read, and write Chinese at the same time. Intermediate Written Chinese allows you the flexibility to learn the written language and the written Chinese at your own pace. Learn to use 336 high frequency characters, and over 1,200 common words written with them. Together with the 288 characters and 700 words introduced in Basic Written Chinese, a total of 624 characters and more than 1,900 words are formally taught in this two-volume course. In addition, another 199 supplementary characters and over 700 supplementary words are introduced for extra learning, meaning that you will have encountered a grand total of 823 characters and over 2,600 words by the end of this course. Carefully designed to have you quickly reading and writing connected Chinese sentences. Each lesson introduces six new characters and a number of words written with them. By dividing the learning into small tasks, you attain a sense of accomplishment rather than getting bogged down. The structure and etymology of each new character is explained in detail to make the learning of characters easier, and similar characters are compared and contrasted. Some lessons include realia such as photographs of street signs, name cards, e-mail messages, and handwritten notes. Both simplified and traditional characters are taught throughout; you may choose to learn one or both. Features a variety of fonts in both typeset and handwritten styles, to prepare you to use Chinese in many different contexts—from reading signs and newspapers, to computers and mobile phone texts. The downloadable audio includes: Over 6 hours of audio by several native Mandarin speakers. Recordings of all reading selections. Recordings with the pronunciations of all new characters and words. I asked Benny for help and his advice was invaluable." - Tim Ferriss What if you could skip the years of study and jump right to speaking Mandarin? Sound Crazy? No, it's language hacking. It's about learning what's indispensable, skipping what's not - and using what you've learned to have real conversations in Mandarin - from day one! Unlike most traditional language courses that try to teach you the rules of a language, Language Hacking Mandarin, shows you how to learn and speak Mandarin immediately through proven memory techniques, unconventional shortcuts and conversation strategies perfect by one of the world's greatest language learners, Benny Lewis, aka the Irish Polyglot. The Method Language Hacking takes a modern approach to language learning, blending the power of online social collaboration and the 80/20 principle of learning (Benny's ten #languagehacks show you how to achieve more with less!). It focuses on the conversations and language that learners need to master right away, rather than presenting language in the order of difficulty like most courses. This means you can start having conversations immediately. Course Features Each of the 10 units culminates with a speaking mission that you can choose to share on the italki Language Hacking learner community (www.italki.com/languagehacking) where you can give and get feedback and extend your learning beyond the pages of the book.
