Adoptive immunotherapy is another fascinating aspect of cytokine treatment. The last section of the book is dedicated to the clinical and preclinical effects of IL2, together with basic overviews on NK-cell regulation and differentiation.

Cytokines in Hemopoiesis Oncology and AIDS

The proceedings of the First International Symposium on Cytokines in Hemopoiesis, Oncology, and AIDS offer a comprehensive overview on the latest clinical and preclinical advances in the rapidly developing field of cytokines. The network of the hemopoietic growth factors is one first focus of the book. Effects and actions of GM-CSF, G-CSF, M-CSF, IL-3, IL-4, IL-6 and erythropoietin on normal and malignant hemopoietic cells are discussed in several contributions. As a special feature data on stimulation of nonhemopoietic cells are presented. TNF is in the focus of another section of the book. Clinical data are accompanied by an overview on the TNF-receptor and the regulation of its expression. The interferon section of the book provides the latest information on clinical studies on chronic myeloid leukemia, essential thrombocytosis, Non-Hodgkin-lymphoma, and gastrointestinal carcinomas.

The clinical and experimental effects of cytokines have been realized for a long time. The clinical effects of tumor necrosis factor were noted almost 100 years ago. The basic biological effects of interferons and the hemopoietic growth factors have been known for more than 20 years. Given the basis of modern molecular biotechniques, information concern ing the mediators of cellular interactions is expanding almost exponentially. New principles in the regulation of cell growth, microenvironment, immune response, and malignancy are being discoverd right now. New therapeutic options are becoming available and have, in some areas, already crossed the threshold of clinical application. However, the way forward might be more complicated than we are in a position to recognize today. Some of the first optimistic expectations have not yet been fulfilled. Nevertheless, we are experiencing a revolution in medicine. To contribute to this process and to stimulate scientific communi in this field, we have initiated the international symposia on cytokines cation in hemopoiesis, oncology and aids. Major contributions from the first sym posium are published in this book. We thank all the authors for their contri butions, particularly those from the Hannover Medical School, who have worked hard to realize the congress and prepare these proceedings. We also thank the pharmaceutical companies whose support made this book possible. Finally we thank Professors Deicher, Poliwoda, and Riehm, heads of the Departments of Hematology and Oncology, Immunology, and Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, respectively, who encouraged us and gave us their firm support.

Cytokines

This book provides comprehensive coverage of the cytokines from a pharmacological approach. The chapters are presented in a consistent format allowing easy cross-reference, with sample diagrams and a summary table of essential facts for each chapter at the end of the book. Cytokines is unique in stressing cytokine biology and the application of research data to provide disease therapy. With 33 detailed and up-to-date chapters about individual cytokines, this comprehensive reference will provide both clinicians and researchers in immunology and pharmacology with invaluable information. Genetic information and sequences Protein structure Cell sources and production Biological activity Cytokine receptor structure and signal transduction Discussion of the role of cytokines in disease and the potential for therapy Summary table of essential facts Comprehensive bibliography

Cytokines in hemopoiesis, oncology and AIDS. Ed Freund/Link/Schmidt/Welte. Springer Verlag, Berlin Heidelberg, 1992: 761– 768. 5. Blaise D, Viens P, ...

Acute Leukemias V

150 years after the first description of the clinical picture of "white blood" and the introduction of the term "leukemia" by R. Virchow it appears, that the leukemias, and the acute leukemias in particular, serve as an impressive example for the major improvements that have been achieved in the treatment but also in the understand ing of the biology of malignant dis orders. The international symposia "Acute Leukemia" which are held at Münster since 1986 have developed into an interna tional forum to review the current progress and the future perspectives of leukemia research and therapy at a high scientific and clinicallevel. Since the possibility for active participation in these symposia is somewhat restricted we are glad to have the opportunity to extend the information that was presented at the symposium "Acute Leukemias V - Experimental Approaches and Management of Refractory Disease" which was held from February 27 to March 2, 1994 to a broader audience of basic scientists and clinicians. This meeting was especiaIly designed to discuss experimen tal approaches and the management of refractory disease which allows to evaluate new experimental therapies on the basis of preclinical studies.

In addition, fundamental questions concerning the bi-directional interactions between the central nervous system and the immune system are discussed and the role of viruses and infectious processes closely examined. As such, this book offers a unique presentation of the state of the art in psychoimmunology and, at the same time, shows many important challenges for future research into the field of intersystemic interactions and their impact on the etiology and pathogenesis of psychiatric diseases.
