The editors conclude that, although lasting individual differences are evident by the end of the preschool years, a child's developmental path in middle childhood contributes significantly to the adolescent and adult that he or she becomes. Findings suggest that the effects of interactive media are not uniform, but rather vary as a function of the child's age. That is, children's episodic memory encoding skills are more susceptible to the influence of interactive gaming in middle childhood rather than early childhood, once metacognitive skills have come online. The impacts of interactive media also vary based on features of interactive devices or games and the environments they provide for children. Games high in adaptivity, control, and feedback provided children with more opportunities for metacognitive experiences. After a two-week intervention, manipulating the types of gaming environments children experience in the home, small but significant improvements in episodic memory encoding was observed.

Developmental Pathways Through Middle Childhood

When can contexts and diversity be resources, rather than risks, for children's developmental pathways? Scholars, policy makers, and practitioners increasingly realize that middle childhood matters as a time when children's pathways diverge, as they meet new and overlapping contexts they must navigate on their way to adolescence and adulthood. This volume shines new light on this important transition by tracing how these contexts -- cultural, economic, historical, political, and social -- can support or undermine children's pathways, and how children's own actions and the actions of those around them shape these pathways. With a focus on demographic changes taking place in the U.S., the volume also maps how experiences of diversity, reflecting culture, ethnicity, gender, and social class, matter for children's life contexts and options. This study contributes novel data both on two biomarkers, extending our understanding of the range for "normal" child development, and on adrenarche in an environment where nutritional stress and extrinsic mortality are high. It additionally provides ethnographic data on age categories, stressors, and socio-cognitive development during middle childhood among Sidama agropastoralists. The results demonstrate not only that stress impacts patterns of ontogeny during middle childhood, but also the importance of integrating biology, culture, and ecology if we are to fully understand the role of stress in shaping the evolution of human life history.
