The idea of this book is very simple. Nowadays, there are many good, very comprehensive, “thick” books available on Elbow Surgery. Although they are useful to obtain discrete information about specific topics, they are too large to be a user friendly for a general orthopedic surgeon facing common elbow problems. It has been our experience throughout the years, teaching our residents and visitors, that there is a real demand for a less extensive book, easy to read, and with practical information about the most commonly encountered problems of the elbow. This text would be enough to understand the common elbow practice for a general orthopedic surgeon and a guide to learn basic elbow surgery during training. There is nothing like this available today. It will be strongly oriented to practice, and all the authors, well known internationally for their expertise on elbow surgery, will be homogeneous in their message.

The book’s extensive use of original illustrations, colour photographs, radiology images, boxes and tables emphasises important concepts and will promote easy revision of topics. The principles of operative surgery and pre-, peri- and postoperative care are explained together with outlines of common operations, enabling students and trainee surgeons to properly understand procedures and to participate intelligently in the operating department. A major and comprehensive revision of the text has taken full account of the progressive evolution of surgery and includes new scientific and clinical concepts that have advanced medical understanding. Ensuring the book’s contents are aligned to the curriculum of the UK Intercollegiate MRCS examination has resulted in the addition of new topics including an emphasis on peri-operative care optimisation, enhanced recovery programmes, antibiotic use and resistance, updated cancer staging, minimally invasive surgery, and the evolving role of interventional radiology. Additional essential governance and management topics are covered, including patient safety, surgical ethics, communication, consent, clinical audit and principles of research. The broad experience of surgical teaching and training of two new editors and many new contributors, all with sub-specialist expertise, have brought a contemporary perspective on the book’s contents and its presentation. New national and international guidelines for managing common disorders have been incorporated where appropriate, including major haemorrhage management pathways and trauma. There are new dedicated chapters on major trauma management and elective orthopaedics.

Pain Care Essentials

It may come as something of a surprise that pain, the most prevalent symptom in clinical practice, is not always addressed specifically in health professions training. Approximately one in six Americans lives with chronic pain in addition to the millions that experience acute pain each day. Half of older adults live with chronic pain-associated conditions, and about half of all healthcare visits are initiated because of pain. Despite this, reports indicate that the vast majority of health professions schools in the United States do not teach required courses on pain, and the total amount of content pertaining to pain is a fraction of a percent of the total. Almost certainly, the lack of education in coordinated, comprehensive, compassionate care for pain-associated conditions contributed to pervasive opioid over-prescribing and the ensuing wave of addiction and deaths that swept the country in the first part of this century. This book is our response to the pain care crisis - it is designed to prepare young clinicians to assess and treat a wide variety of pain conditions in a manner that balances competence and compassion, incorporating coordinated elements of pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. Designed to be read during or after pre-licensure training, e.g. medical, nursing, pharmacy school, and to inspire students to learn more about painful conditions, this book is unique in its clinical focus and the level of detail that is included. This book aims to improve pain care, most especially if used alongside a formal pain care course as part of pre-licensure training, whether spread over four years or condensed into a shorter period. Through engagement in the interprofessional curriculum planning process, the content of the book has been shaped to align with the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) interprofessional pain curriculum vision and to focus on the primary questions of: What is pain? How is pain assessed? How is pain managed? How does clinical context influence pain?

nature of previous surgery and muscles available for transfer By the age of 4 years, flexion deformity of the elbow of 20 degrees has developed; this is likely to progress unless muscle balance across the elbow is restored.

Essential Paediatric Orthopaedic Decision Making

This collection of practical Case reports provides a concise guide to managing a wide spectrum of orthopaedic conditions in children. Strategies for determining an optimum management approach to follow in any given situation are provided, and are supported with clinical illustrations and guidelines. Sixty challenging clinical scenarios are presented, from malunion of a tibial fracture to pseudarthrosis of the tibia, after failed primary surgery. Each case is approached in a systematic manner with a background history, key features of physical examination and a series of questions. The questions lead to the goals of surgery, followed by a list of options for the management of each case. The option chosen by the surgeon is then presented, usually with intraoperative, clinical and radiographic illustrations. The majority of cases have substantial follow-up to illustrate the wisdom of the surgical decision-making, the surgical skill employed and the diligent post-operative care and follow-up. Trainees in pediatric orthopaedics and those sitting their final specialty examination will find this Case-based approach helps to anchor both their understanding and retention of key concepts.
