This book is Paul Grimwood's follow-up to Euro Firefighter: Fire Tactics and Training Manual. In this new volume, he examines fire engineering and firefighting tactics to investigate how the ever-changing built environment is shaping current and future firefighting tactics, as well as how creative building design may assist firefighters in their work. In this book the author analyses 6,701 building fires occurring in the UK between 1984 and 2012. The outcomes of this research have effectively shaped specific national fire design guidance and firefighting tactics over the past twenty five years.

Paul Grimwood has responded and worked from over a hundred fire stations in the USA and Europe. In this, his third book, he demonstrates how the very best strategies and tactical approaches from Europe and the USA may be effectively combined to enhance firefighter tactics and safety at structure fires. The book also covers and exceeds the 2007 syllabus of the European (UK) EDEXCEL CFBT Instructor Qualification (90 hours) for practical Fire Behavior Training (flashover training in ISO shipping containers and other FDS units). Euro Firefighter is for the CFBT instructor, firefighter, company officer and fire chief. The concept of teaching about flashover using ISO steel shipping containers was developed in Europe now read how European instructors teach fire behavior using a vast array of Fire Development Simulators (FDS). This book will also take you out onto the fire-grounds of London, New York, Madrid, Chicago, Paris, Germany and Sweden, demonstrating how similar fires are fought using different strategic approaches and showing how US and EURO firefighting tactics are gradually aligning in many areas. From tactical ventilation to air management, from Rapid Intervention Teams to high-rise firefighting and limited staffing, the author brings you the best tactics from Europe and the USA in one training manual! Written in such a way that the training officer can immediately transfer key learning points directly into training presentations, the core principles of this training package enhance firefighter safety on the fire-ground. The book also provides a LINK CODE for ongoing updates and web-based downloads. Euro Firefighter covers a broad range of issues important to anyone who steps off a fire truck at the scene of an emergency."

Urban conflagrations, such as the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and the Great Boston Fire the following year, terrorized the citizens of nineteenth-century American cities. However, urban rebirth in the aftermath of great fires offered a chance to shape the future. Ultimately residents and planners created sweeping changes in the methods of constructing buildings, planning city streets, engineering water distribution systems, underwriting fire insurance, and firefighting itself. Crucible of Fire describes how the practical knowledge gained from fighting nineteenth-century fires gave form and function to modern fire protection efforts. Changes in materials and building design resulted directly from tragedies such as fires in supposedly fireproof hotels. Thousands of buildings burned, millions of dollars were lost, the fire insurance industry faltered, and the nature of volunteerism changed radically before municipal authorities took the necessary actions. The great fires formed a crucible of learning for firefighters, engineers, architects, underwriters, and citizens. Veteran firefighter Bruce Hensler shows how the modern American fire service today is a direct result of the lessons of history and a rethinking of the efficacy of volunteerism in fighting fires. Crucible of Fire is an eye-opening look at today's fire service and a thorough examination of what firefighters, civic leaders, and ordinary citizens can do to protect their homes and communities from the mistakes of the past.

This publication presents the latest results of the ILO October Inquiry, a worldwide survey of wages and hours of work relating to 159 occupations in 49 industry groups and of retail prices of 93 food items, conducted with reference to the month of October each year. It was initiated in 1924 to give effect to a resolution of the First International Conference of Labour Statisticians (1923) and has been conducted regularly ever since. It has been revised several times since then, the last major revision and expansion of the Inquiry was introduced in October 1985. The occupations and industry groups covered comprise, as far as possible, those which are important in terms of the number of persons employed in them, those which fall within the scope of the ILO Industrial Committees and similar bodies and those which are important in terms of employment of certain types of workers (such as women, salaried employees and so on). The food items covered are, to the extent possible, representative of the dietary habits countries throughout the world.

In mid-2009 Simeon Djankov, who had dealt with a variety of economic and financial crises as chief economist for finance and private sector development at the World Bank, was suddenly thrust into the job of finance minister of his native Bulgaria. For nearly four years in that post, he attended more than 40 meetings of European finance ministers and had a front row seat at the intense discussions and struggles to overcome the economic and financial crisis that threatened to unravel the historic undertaking of an economically integrated Europe. In this personal account, Djankov details his odyssey on the front lines, observing Europe's fitful efforts to contain crises in Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, and France. He tells the inside story of how the European Central Bank assumed responsibility for the crisis, pledging to do "whatever it takes" to save the euro area. This candid book recounts the disagreements over fiscal austerity, monetary policy, and banking supervision, while focusing on the personalities who promoted progress—and those who opposed it. He also tells the dramatic story of the events that led to his own resignation as finance minister in 2013 over the policies he was pursuing to spare Bulgaria from getting sucked into the crisis.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second IFIP WG 6.8 Joint Conference on Wireless and Mobile Networking, WMNC 2009, held in Gdansk, Poland, in September 2009. The 30 thoroughly revised papers presented together with one invited talk were selected from 65 submissions. The papers are evenly split among three tracks: Personal Wireless Communications (PWC), Wireless Sensor and Actors Networks (WSAN) and Mobile and Wireless Communications Networks (MWCN) reflecting the state of the art, current discussions, and development trends in wireless and mobile networks and services. They are divided in topical sections on IMS interoperability; QoS and multimedia support; network design; sensor networks; trust management and competitive networking; location algorithms; evolution of 3G, 3G/4G and future generation systems; and handover mechanisms.
