Going the Distance

"Long-distance oceanic and overland trade along the Eurasian landmass in the 1400s was largely dominated by Chinese, Indian, and Arabic traders and predominantly conducted over short trajectories by sole traders or organized around small-scale enterprises. Yet, within two centuries of Europeans' arrival in the Indian Ocean in 1498, long-distance trade throughout Eurasia was mainly taken over by them. By 1700, they had formed new, large-scale, and impersonal organizations, primarily a joint-stock business corporation between English East India Company (EIC) and Dutch East India Company (VOC). This allowed them to transform trade from an enterprise dominated by many small traders moving goods over short segments to a vertically integrated firm that was able to control goods from their origin to the end consumers. This rise of the business corporation proved essential for the economic rise of Europe. Why did the corporation arise indigenously only in Europe, and given its effective organization of long-distance trade, why wasn't it mimicked by other Eurasian civilizations for 300 years? Harris closely examines the role played by forms of organization in the transformation of Eurasian trade between 1400 and 1700, comparing the organizational forms that were used in four major civilizations: Chinese, Indian, Middle Eastern, and Western European. Through this comparative perspective, he argues that the organizational design of the EIC and VOC, the first long-lasting joint-stock corporations, enabled large-scale multilateral impersonal cooperation for the first time in human history. He also argues that this new organizational form enabled the English and Dutch to deploy more capital, more ships, more voyages, and more agents than other organizational forms"--

Going the Distance

A visceral, true telling of life growing up with an abusive mother, a hard-working father, and four siblings who I leaned upon to overcome depression, immense sorrow, and crippling guilt. Through my experiences, I've learned that everyone has a story. Everyone deals with hardships and obstacles and losses and failures. And too often, people use these traumatic events as excuses to give up and not try to be the best version of themselves possible. I thought about giving up on myself, about quitting and allowing myself to be enveloped by destructive emotions and things I couldn't control. My story delves into all that I faced, the choices I had to make, and the life lessons I learned along the way.

Going the Distance

Sea-kayaking in the Hauraki Gulf, mountain-biking in the Maniototo, horse-trekking in the Urewera, canoeing on the Whanganui River, camping and tramping are some of the activities in this book encouraging women to venture into the outdoors. Travel journalist Tess Redgrave and award-winning photographer Becky Nunes left their comfortable, Auckland urban lives to make the ten journeys described in their inspirational book. * Fiordland * Catlins, Southland * Otago Central Rail Trail * Port Pegasus, Stewart Island * Tora Walkway, South Wairarapa * Whanganui River, Central North Island * Te Urewera, East North Island * Eastern Bay of Plenty * * Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands * Cape Reinga, Far North All the practical information required to embark on each of these journeys - maps, gear lists, contact details of operators - is included at the end of each chapter together with a list of futher reading, both historical and contemporary. Although women have always 'gone outdoors' in New Zealand, in the last 10 to 15 years they have started to go out in droves and there are now operators offering opportunities both for those who want to be challenged to their physical limits and for those seeking a more gentle meander through the land. The journeys in Going the Distance are medium adrenalin and should be accessible to women of all ages and reasonable fitness. Another dimension is added to several stories where the modern day journey is layered over the top of an early colonial woman's experience. For example the seven-day sea voyage from Doubtful Sound to Preservation Inlet was inspired by the 1898 trip of 2 Victorian travellers. The account of their journey makes an interesting contrast as does Katherine Mansfield's The Urewera Notebook which accompanies Tess and Becky on their horse-trek into the same country. These personal stories capture the essence of the journeys - the human side of the experience and the women's response to the environment. From venturing into the sub-Antarctic ocean to kayak in Stewart Island to tramping in the far-north they are challenged by the elements, however their adventures illustrate the joy and satisfaction to be gained by going outside one's comfort zone and heading into the outdoors. 130 colour photographs illustrate the stories and entice the reader to explore further. 'These stories are about journeying 'distances' in the widest sense - through a physical landscape, following the paths of those who've gone before. But they are also about distances travelled with other people and with oneself. As can often be true of the outdoor experience: sometimes the more difficult the journey, the greater the distance travelled.' Tess Redgrave

Going the Distance

The 1970s ushered in boxing's greatest class of heavyweight fighters. The fight game has never before or since seen such a talented and charismatic group. Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, and Ken Norton have been hailed as "Champions Forever, " as the world heavyweight title was passed among them throughout the decade. On March 31, 1973, Norton broke Ali's jaw in the process of winning a 12-round decision over "The Greatest." Going the Distance traces the incredible path of Norton's life, from Jacksonville, Illinois, to Northeast Missouri State University, to the U.S. Marines, to his historic bout with Ali in San Diego, California, and on to his life today. The book includes exclusive personal photos from Norton's collection, as well as a chronology of Norton's 49 professional fights.

Fierce

FIERCE Going the Distance II – YOLO A full-length, stand-alone romance. Distance. Chelsea Anderson uses it to flee a violent past and escape into the welcome anonymity of travel as she backpacks around the world. But when an explosion derails her train and strands her in the middle of nowhere, Chelsea, her travel buddy Madeline, and the fiercely sexy Alec McRae are forced to camp out in a tiny mountain village in the Alps. Fighting to escape the dark memories that surface, Chelsea finds herself sharing a very hot kiss with the brooding Alec—but flees back into the safety of distance. If Alec McRae had invented the perfect girl, she would have looked like Chelsea, and the more time he spends with her, the more he wants her. A simmering sexual tension burns between them, but Alec, too, is using distance as a buffer to hide two secrets: the shame of a life spent in brutal poverty, and guilt that someone in his life made a supreme sacrifice to give him a fresh start. When the group escapes the Alps, Chelsea and Alec share a magical week in Venice, where the lovers are confronted with everything they’ve tried to leave behind. Will they take a stand and embrace their love or let distance destroy everything?

Going the Distance

Olivia Clarke’s fall from pretty, perfect, and popular happened in an instant. With her life in tatters, she impulsively accepts a teaching job in the small city of Lazhou, China. Three months in, she’s ready to admit she made a huge mistake. She doesn't speak Mandarin, the teachers at her school refuse to include her in anything, and she spends her nights watching counterfeit DVDs in her twin bed. Alone. Jarek McLean is a loner. He’s not looking for friends, and he’s definitely not looking for love. The former army interrogator now works as a carpenter for a small construction company rebuilding a travel office in Lazhou. When he meets Olivia he knows immediately she’s too wholesome to be his type, but when he discovers the pretty kindergarten teacher is hiding a secret, his inquisitive side rears its nosy head and demands answers. Olivia isn't interested in a one-sided interrogation, and makes her position clear: if Jarek wants to ask questions, he’ll have to answer some, too. Jarek’s never let anyone in—not into his apartment, not into his life, certainly not into his heart. But the closer he gets to Olivia, the more he falls for her, and suddenly the man who doesn't do relationships finds himself in a most unexpected one. When he reluctantly admits that this could be love, he’s faced with the most terrifying question of all: What the hell does he do now?
