Housewives Can Change the World

Chapter 14 “Housewives Can Change the World.” That was the whole reason I wrote all this down. It was to communicate the testimony that simple steps of obedience can and do change the world one step at a time. We don't see the beginning ...

Housewives Can Change the World

What is this key? How and why did I get it, anyway? What is it used for? My story started long before I became a housewife. Since a very young age, I have seen God at work preparing me for "such a time as this." Though I didn't know God until I was twenty-one years old, He knew me from my mother's womb, and He had a plan for my life. Satan had a plan too, but "greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world." I am grateful God came to earth through His Son Jesus Christ to save and call people like me. We are saved by what Jesus did on the cross and not by what we do. Therefore, there is no pressure to perform. Because God shows no favoritism we are also free from jealousy, envy and strife. The good news is that this is for everyone! We are all free to hear His voice! We are all free to obey! He gave all of us the keys of the Kingdom when we got saved. SO WHY THIS ONE KEY?

It s a Sunrise Not a Sunset

Have you ever wondered why we focus so much on sunsets and not sunrises? Maybe because it's easier to watch a sunset as it happens in a more convenient time of the day. Maybe it's just become a habit to photograph and paint sunsets instead of sunrises. The same can be true in our own lives. We can form habits of focusing on the sunsets in our lives, and when we do, we can miss the sunrises in them. The sun setting represents the end of the day while the sun rising represents the beginning of the day. In the same way, sunsets in our personal lives can symbolize the end of something or the loss of something, while sunrises can symbolize the start of something or the gain of something. When we think the sun is setting on our circumstances, maybe the sun is really rising. God is always turning our circumstances together for good. Is it time for you to proclaim, "It's a sunrise, not a sunset"?

Grassroots Pacifism in Post War Japan

Grassroots Pacifism in Post-War Japan presents new material on grassroots peace activism and pacifism in two major groups active in the post-World War 2 peace movement - workers and housewives. Yamamoto contends that the peace movement, which was organised in tandem with other activities to promote democratic, economic and humanitarian issues, served as a popular lever which helped to eliminate feudal remnants that lingered in Japanese society and individual attitudes after the war, thereby modernizing the political process and the outlook of the ordinary Japanese. Including extensive primary material such as letters, essays, memoirs and interviews, specialists in Japanese history, peace studies and women's studies will appreciate the richness of the text supporting Yamamoto's narrative of how workers' and women's political awareness developed under the influence of organizational and ideological interests and contemporary events.

 Just a Housewife

Housewives constitute a large section of the population, yet they have received very little attention, let alone respect. Glenna Matthews, who herself spent many years as "just a housewife" before becoming a scholar of American history, sets out to redress this imbalance. While the male world of work has always received the most respect, Matthews maintains that widespread reverence for the home prevailed in the nineteenth century. The early stages of industrialization made possible a strong tradition of cooking, baking, and sewing that gave women great satisfaction and a place in the world. Viewed as the center of republican virtue, the home also played an important religious role. Examining novels, letters, popular magazines, and cookbooks, Matthews seeks to depict what women had and what they have lost in modern times. She argues that the culture of professionalism in the late nineteenth century and the culture of consumption that came to fruition in the 1920s combined to kill off the "cult of domesticity." This important, challenging book sheds new light on a central aspect of human experience: the essential task of providing a society's nurture and daily maintenance.

Secrets of Powerful Women

"There is something special that happens when you get a group of powerful women in a room . . . and shut the door." -- Andrea Wong, President and CEO, Lifetime Networks "There's such a reservoir of power among us when we pool our resources and uplift each other. Youth Policy in a Changing World

Why do we need evidence based youth policies? International in scope, this book presents a systematic and interdisciplinary reflection on what has been termed the “magic triangle”, i.e., the relationship between youth policies, youth research and practical youth work, based on the necessity of organising knowledge exchange between different actors in the youth field. On this basis, researchers from across the globe analyse and discuss youth policy development, the theories that underlie youth policy, as well as the models and impact of youth policy in different societies. They respond by: - Analysing the impact of economic, social and cultural change on young people in different world regions, locations and social contexts; - Presenting and explaining theories of youth; - Discussing strategies for the development and implementation of youth policies in different world regions; - Evaluating the impact of current youth policies at regional, national and international levels; - Analysing and discussing applied models of cross sectional policy and practice in the youth sector; - Discussing contributions of youth research to the development of evidence based youth policies in areas such as values, employment, participation, citizenship, migration, social exclusion and vulnerability.

Three women embark on a month-long “discovery” journey and uncover quite a few tidbits along the way…one bottle of Clairol Midnight will not cover a full head of red hair, and never talk to men wearing polyester pants hiked up with a tan belt. The center of controversy is a Maid-for-You mixer, which symbolizes a boring, routine suburban life with no second chances—then along comes insight in the form of Tula Rae, a sixty-something salsa-dancing, Dalai Lama-quoting, four-time widow in Spandex and a gray braid who gives them a different perspective on life, love, do-overs, and the real reason a man buys his woman a Maid-for-You mixer, which she says is all about S-E-X. Earth Follies

Chapter 6 Hysterical Housewives, Treehuggers, and Other Mad Women THE GREEN CONSUMER Personal responses to planetary crises seem to be in ... Many of us are comforted by the belief that we can change the world one kitchen at a time.

Earth Follies

First published in 1993. The question of ‘agency’ is essential to our understanding of environmental problems - who is responsible, and why? Threats such as ozone depletion, global warming and overconsumption are all precipitated by the powerful institutions which shape modern life – institutions which are overwhelmingly controlled by men and dominated by masculine presumptions. Joni Seager argues that the gender bias inherent in western culture is inextricably linked to our environmental crisis. She analyses the traditional institutes of power – governments, the military and transnational corporations - and also takes a critical look at the equally patriarchal environmental establishment, comparing the work of the official environmental movement, grounded in masculine thought, with the smaller-scale, direct actions taken by women driven to protect their homes and communities. Earth Follies represents an incisive and utterly convincing feminist critique of our environmental crises, and offers radical and productive priorities for the environmental agenda.

These and other terms have become part of an emerging lexicon in recent years, signalling an important development that has gripped many parts of the world: millions of people are increasingly involved, whether directly or indirectly, in movements of resistance and protestation. However, resistance and its conceptual "companions”, protest, contestation, opposition, disobedience and mobilization, all seem to be still mostly seen in public and private discourses as illegitimate and problematic forms of action. The time is, therefore, ripe to delve into the concerns, themes and legitimacy. The SAGE Handbook of Resistance offers theoretical essays enabling readers to forge their own perspectives of what “is” resistance and emphasizes the empirical and experiential dimension of resistance - making strong choices in terms of how contemporary topics related to resistance help to rethink our societies as “protest societies”. The coverage is divided into six key sub-sections: Foundations Sites of Resistance Technologies of Resistance Languages of Resistance Geographies of Resistance Consequences of Resistance

Integral Innovation

Technology plays a critical role in transforming societies and economies through enhancing efficiency, connectivity and access to resources and services. The challenge remains how to harness technologies to achieve sustainable development without causing harm to human and natural capitals. Professor Odeh Rashed Al-Jayyousi argues that science, technology and innovation (STI) are underpinned by social choices and, hence, a transition to a sustainable green economy is defined by individuals’ and institutions’ decisions on how to use and apply these STI developments. It is, therefore, important to examine closely the ways in which social institutions and processes in the “integral worlds” (the different perspectives of reality) shape the priorities of technologies and the conditions under which their potential benefits can be reaped. He states that in order for technological innovation to provide a guarantee of sustainable economic development, it is necessary that a transfer of technology to developing countries becomes a basic principle of national development policies, and that they, in turn, are open to adopting an explicit long-term application of technological innovation. Integral Innovation: New Worldviews presents a conceptual framework for the evolution of technology and innovation from a historical and cultural perspective. It provides an analysis of the role of innovation and technology in sustainable development and introduces a number of international case studies, which shed light on the social learning processes for knowledge co-creation and innovation culture. It is essential reading for those interested in innovation and technology management.

The Free Church Today New Life for the Whole Church

Will you have a real Christ who died and lives again for man? Will you offer them a real Salvation, an honest change in sinful life—a change great enough in their life so that they, in Christ's name, can change the world's life?

The Free Church Today New Life for the Whole Church

This important contribution to American ecumenism is an impassioned plea for an encounter between the mainline denominational churches and the vital new “third force” of the evangelical and “free” churches. It strives to bridge the gulf between the most uncritical supporters of organic church union and those most suspicious of its organizational purpose and theology. It suggests that the common elements of the New Testament church life in all local churches provide a basis for understandings out of which a new spirit and a broad new alignment can evolve. It urges the mainline groups to achieve an understanding with these free churches—whose doctrine of authority posits a direct, personal rule of Christ over each local “gathered” congregation without the meditation of bishops, priests, synods or councils—in seeking a new basis for achieving the reality of the “great church coming” which is the ecumenical hope. The author’s conviction is that the future of the church in America and of any vital ecumenical witness rests with these “left out” churches and their creative rapprochement with other life of all churches together in an exciting and meaningful mission in which American churches of all traditions can share completely, yet without compromise.

Love Will Tear You Apart

The house is floodlit, the crystal glasses are ready, the waiters and maids arelined up. A delicate Chanel dress lies on the bed. Eugenia is late for her father’s birthday: and she knows full well that celebrations for Paolo De Gasperis, a prominent Milanese entrepreneur, are not ordinary occasions. She enters the house in a hurry, and then she stops, taken aback: the drawing room is empty of guests. The news came a few days ago: the De Gasperis company’s huge building site has been seized, and Paolo has been charged with serious offences. Lucy, his wife, is devastated: she can already see their assets confiscated, the family ruined. But Eugenia does not know that everything is changing. She doesn’t want to know. Because not long ago, at university, she met Tobias, the first boy who’s ever made her feel this way: intelligent, straightforward, real. He’s half German and has lived in Milan for a few months. He’s far removed from the glittering world in which she has grown up: he doesn’t know about luxuries or parties at the villa, and in Eugenia he sees a depth she didn’t know she had. Together – on their late-night strolls, on stolen afternoons they should have spent studying – they discover an unexpected city, made up of cloisters and country roads off the beaten track. But perhaps, dreams cannot last. Eugenia will return home, once and for all, to stand by her family. And she will have to decide the destiny of her newly-found love. Giulia Ottaviano has written a real page-turner, a book that tells of desire and fear as we experience them today.
