"Great reading for the criminal-minded." --VIBE "George writes with pace and panache...packing his tale with more glitzy characters than a red carpet E! broadcast." --Kirkus Reviews "Emmy-winning TV producer George examines the ambition, deception, corruption and pervasive drug culture that lurk on the underside of the music world in this noirish thriller." --Publishers Weekly "The Accidental Hunter is a real page-turner, worth staying up late into the night for." --PopMatters.com "From the beginning, there is nonstop action and excitement. D. is a man trying to survive the mean streets and do the right thing, even if it's sometimes hard to know what the right things are." --RT Book Reviews "The ending of the book has me anticipating the next in the series." --Rawsistaz Literary Group The Accidental Hunter marks the debut of D Hunter, Nelson George's unforgettable bodyguard-turned-PI whom Library Journal calls "...as world weary, yet steadfast, as Philip Marlowe." A security specialist who thrives off of Manhattan's nightlife, D Hunter is the man people turn to when they need help without drawing the attention of the NYPD. When a rising R&B star is kidnapped, music manager Ivy Greenwich hires D for an unusual assignment. Things go well, and D thinks he’s done. But Greenwich has other plans: he wants D to escort mega-pop star Bridgette Haze around New York City's top hip hop clubs to give her an edgier, more urban image. Hunter reluctantly agrees, and he soon finds himself both falling for Haze and in urgent pursuit of a mysterious kidnapper, all while battling his own thirst for revenge. Like the subsequent novels in the D Hunter Mystery series--The Plot Against Hip Hop and The Lost Treasures of R&B--The Accidental Hunter is a fast-paced, noir-tinged mystery fueled by New York City's hip hop culture.

Cowboys are an American legend, but despite ubiquity in history and popular culture, misperceptions abound. Technically, a cowboy worked with cattle, as a ranch hand, while his boss, the cattleman, owned the ranch. Jacqueline M. Moore casts aside romantic and one-dimensional images of cowboys by analyzing the class, gender, and labor histories of ranching in Texas during the second half of the nineteenth century. As working-class men, cowboys showed their masculinity through their skills at work as well as public displays in town. But what cowboys thought was manly behavior did not always match those ideas of the business-minded cattlemen, who largely absorbed middle-class masculine ideals of restraint. Real men, by these standards, had self-mastery over their impulses and didn’t fight, drink, gamble or consort with "unsavory" women. Moore explores how, in contrast to the mythic image, from the late 1870s on, as the Texas frontier became more settled and the open range disappeared, the real cowboys faced increasing demands from the people around them to rein in the very traits that Americans considered the most masculine. Published in Cooperation with the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies, Southern Methodist University.

In male-dominated culture it is often problematic for young males to take up theatrical dance. Despite the development of gender-specific approaches to get more boys involved, dance education appears to be a prime site of oppression. Located at the intersection of dance studies and the sociology of masculinity, this book presents discourses through which masculinities are constructed and performed in the area of dance education in Finland. The book includes a detailed investigation of male identities constructed in relation to dance, gender and sexuality as well as an analysis of masculine embodiments and performances as a political rhetoric. The author's intertextual analysis focuses on the rejection of effeminacy, or the fear of stepping 'queerly', in male dancing. Such fear, the author argues, underscores the complex question of the social legitimacy of dance art. This book will provide new understanding on discursive power and masculinities in dance education.

THE HUNTER AND OTHER STORIES is a unique literary publication from one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, Dashiell Hammett. This volume includes both new Hammett stories gleaned from his personal archives along with screen treatments long buried in film-industry files. The best of Dashiell Hammett's unfamiliar treasures have been rescued from deep in these archives: screen stories, unpublished and rarely published fiction, and intriguing unfinished narratives. Hammett is regarded as both a pioneer and master of hard-boiled detective fiction, but these dozen and half stories that explore failed romance, courage in the face of conflict, hypocrisy, and crass opportunism, show him in a different light. The collection also includes two full-length screen treatments. On the Make is the basis for the rarely seen 1935 film Mr. Dynamite, starring a corrupt detective who never misses an opportunity to take advantage of his clients rather than help them. The Kiss-Off is the basis for City Streets (1931), with Sylvia Sydney and Gary Cooper caught in a romance complicated by racketeering's obligations and temptations. Like the screen stories from RETURN OF THE THIN MAN, they read as novellas-rich in both story and character. Publication of these new volumes is due to the passion of Julie M. Rivett, Hammett's granddaughter and a well-regarded Hammett scholar, as well as Richard Layman, the author of the first full-length biography of Hammett, Shadow Man, the definitive bibliography, and other works. Rivett and Layman are trustees for Hammett's literary estate and have co-edited two previous Hammett volumes-Selected Letters of Dashiell Hammett and Dashiell Hammett: A Daughter Remembers. THE HUNTER AND OTHER STORIES will appeal to longtime Hammett fans, and introduce a new generation to one of the most influential voices in American fiction.
