Small Scale Public Transportable and Pre Fabricated Buildings

This book investigates the design, operation and use of contemporary transportable buildings, and explores how functional performance can be assessed in small-scale examples for public use alongside their relationship to other design elements. The research focuses on three case studies, Chengdu Hualin Elementary School, Exxopolis and Kreod, that do not require a high-technology building environment or complex construction skills. Transportable buildings are defined as those that are transported in a number of parts for assembly on site. Contemporary transportable buildings respond to ecological issues, social impacts, technological innovation and economic demands. They can be used to measure a society’s development in environmental sustainability, innovation and economic growth through various forms. Small-scale transportable buildings fulfil many temporary habitation needs in diverse roles, such as non-emergency transitional housing, ephemeral exhibition buildings and seasonal entertainment facilities. Small-Scale Public Transportable and Pre-Fabricated Buildings will be a useful research text for academics and students in architecture, design and sustainable building performance.

New Hotel Design

In recent years there has been a remarkable evolution in the design of hotels, with mainstream hotel chains rejecting characterless functionalism in favour of style-led individualism. This book gathers together over 40 of the best examples of hotel architecture and interiors from around the world, illustrating the impressive diversity of styles and forms. Identifying the latest industry trends, Riewoldt makes plain how both chains and independents have adopted individual design strategies to enhance their brand image in an increasingly global marketplace. It featuers the work of Michael Graves, Jean Nouvel and Philippe Starck amongst other big names.

21st Century Hotel

Newly built hotels are being admired throughout the world by travelers andarchitects, and this strikingly illustrated survey features the best new designs. In the past several years, hoteliers have responded ever more boldly to their guests demands for both luxury and aesthetic sophistication. The result has been the emergence of new trends in hotel design, which at one extreme increasingly blur the border between lodging, lifestyle, and living theatre, and at the other seek to reinvent the more discreet manners and style of the grand hotels of the late nineteenth century. New Interior Design

The book is designed to give a stimulating idea of the current direction of international interior design by Nigel Coates, one of the foremost practitioners in the field. The author has selected approximately 30 international designers whose work he thinks is especially interesting. The book will then present a selection of work by these designers in such a way that the relations between different designers (both the differences and similarities) are brought out as well as broader themes in current interior design. While each project selected will be featured over a series of pages, the same project may crop up at various other points through book. The purpose of this is to draw comparisons between each project by letting them cross over into one another’s territory. Hence ‘Collidoscope’, the provisional title of the publication. As such, it should work both as a sourcebook with reference to current tendencies in design and to the ideas that underpin them. It will foreground the designers yet raise challenging differences and overlaps between them.

Essentials of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

"Entrepreneurship has become a major force in the global economy. Policy makers across the world are discovering that economic growth and prosperity lie in the hands of entrepreneurs -- those dynamic, driven men and women who are committed to achieving success by creating and marketing innovative, customer-focused new products and services. Not only are these entrepreneurs creating economic prosperity, but many of them are also striving to make the world a better place in which to live. Those who possess this spirit of entrepreneurial leadership will continue to lead the economic revolution that has proved time and again its ability to raise the standard of living for people everywhere."--

Home Invasion

Josh is less than thrilled that he has a new stepfather, and finds his personal habits—and his personality—irritating. When his mother leaves town, Josh is left to spend a week alone with Clay. Resenting his new living arrangements and his unorthodox home life, Josh finds himself drawn to the idea of a "regular" family and, on a whim, sneaks into a neighbor's house to see how others live. When another opportunity arises to be a fly on the wall, Josh takes it and finds himself becoming bolder. Considering it a harmless pastime, Josh continues entering people's houses, until he is witness to a violent home invasion. Josh must use all his courage to save himself and bring the home invader to justice.

The Idea of North

North is the point we look for on a map to orient ourselves. It is also the direction taken throughout history by the adventurous, the curious, the solitary, and the foolhardy. Based in the North himself, Peter Davidson, in The Idea of North, explores the very concept of "north" through its many manifestations in painting, legend, and literature. Tracing a northbound route from rural England—whose mild climate keeps it from being truly northern—to the wind-shorn highlands of Scotland, then through Scandinavia and into the desolate, icebound Arctic Circle, Davidson takes the reader on a journey from the heart of society to its most far-flung outposts. But we never fully leave civilization behind; rather, it is our companion on his alluring ramble through the north in art and story. Davidson presents a north that is haunted by Moomintrolls and the ghosts of long-lost Arctic explorers but at the same time, somehow, home to the fragile beauty of a Baltic midsummer evening. He sets the Icelandic Sagas, Nabokov's snowy fictional kingdom of Zembla, and Hans Christian Andersen's cryptic, forbidding Snow Queen alongside the works of such artists as Eric Ravilious, Ian Hamilton Finlay, and Andy Goldsworthy, demonstrating how each illuminates a different facet of humanity's relationship to the earth's most dangerous and austere terrain. Through the lens of Davidson's easy erudition and astonishing range of reference, we come to see that the north is more a goal than a place, receding always before us, just over the horizon, past the last town, off the edge of the map. True north may be unreachable, but The Idea of North brings intrepid readers closer than ever before.
