Information and Reflection

The occasion for this work was provided by the recent Marxist-Leninist philosophic pUblications on problems involving the term 'information' and by the extensive discussions of ideas originating in cybernetics. Thus, the issues are quite recent, which explains some peculiarities of our ap proach. Our main effort has been toward the clarification and systematiza tion of questions on information, which arise in the context of cybernetics. Where basic questions are involved, one is brought back to traditional issues as is often the case when dealing with a novel subject. Stress on questions drawn from physics is due to the author's professional involve ment in this field. This work was written under the direction of Professor J.M. Bochenski, principally in the context of a special program at the Institute of East European Studies of the University of Fribourg (Switzerland); a program carried out by Professor Bochenski with the collaboration of Dr. S. Muller-Markus. Participation in the special program was made possible by a grant from the West German 'Innenministerium'. Completion of the work was subsidized by the Bundesinstitut fUr ostwissenschaftliche und internationale Studien in Cologne. Our thanks go to these persons and organisations, who are in no way responsible for the content of the work. Givisiez, May 1967 TRANSLATOR'S NOTE Although we have made use of the works of Cherry and MacKay, cited in the bibliography, our translation of many terms may still seem some what arbitrary to some readers. The explanation for this is threefold.

Theological Reflection

Theological Reflection demonstrates the process of discovery that is at the heart of theological education- learning by reflecting on experience. Theological reflection as presented in this book was developed to support a program of theological education called Education for Ministry (EFM). Its roots are both biblical and traditional, presenting those engaged in theology with the educational context for theological reflection as it has been developed by EFM over more than twenty-five years. It provides a way of learning theology so that participants can develop harmony between life's experience, the world, and the Christian faith. Chapters under Part I: Theological Reflection: Historical, Philosophical, and Theological Context are "Theological Reflection: What It Is and Why," "The Work of Theological Reflection --' Background," "Theological Reflection--Whose Domain?" "Theological Reflection and the People of God," "The Rose of Theological Reflection," and "Theological Reflection: Rationalize or Relational?" Chapters under Part II: Theological Reflection--The Educational Context are "Theological Reflection: Education in Depth," "Theological Reflection and Educational Methods," "Theological Reflection: An Educational Adventure," and "Theological Reflection and the Seminar." Chapters under Part III: Theological Reflection: Methodology, Leadership, and Consequences are "Sources for Theological Reflection," "Methods and Techniques," "Asking Theological Questions," "Guiding Theological Reflections," "The Ethics of Theological Reflection," and "Reflection: The Creation of Power in the Information Age." Edward O. de Bary, StD, is director of the Education for Ministry Program of the School of Theology at The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee.

The Politics of Southeast Asia s New Media

The past decade has seen a major structural shift in broadcasting in Southeast Asia, with the development of digital satellite and cable broadcasting. This shift has impacted upon some of the most information-sensitive governments in the world: Singapore, Malaysia and, until recently, Indonesia. Atkins traces this development in five countries, showing that the challenge to authoritarian regimes, anticipated by modern theorists as a result of the globalization of news and information, is not materializing. Instead, a new commercial elite has arisen, Southeast Asia's own mini-moguls, who act as gatekeepers for state interests, as partners to global media companies.

Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations

Positive autonomy can be divided in having adequate information, cognitive functioning and reflection. For calculating positive autonomy from these three variables, we use the same reasoning as for calculating autonomy.

The papers of the main event are organized in topical sections on data mining, medical informatics and biomedical engineering, problem solving and scheduling, modeling and decision support systems, robotics, and intelligent signal and image processing.

Becoming a Critically Reflective Teacher

A practical guide to the essential practice that builds better teachers. Becoming a Critically Reflective Teacher is the landmark guide to critical reflection, providing expert insight and practical tools to facilitate a journey of constructive self-critique. Stephen Brookfield shows how you can uncover and assess your assumptions about practice by viewing them through the lens of your students' eyes, your colleagues' perceptions, relevant theory and research, and your own personal experience. Practicing critical reflection will help you… Align your teaching with desired student outcomes See your practice from new perspectives Engage learners via multiple teaching formats Understand and manage classroom power dynamics Model critical thinking for your students Manage the complex rhythms of diverse classrooms This fully revised second edition features a wealth of new material, including new chapters on critical reflection in the context of social media, teaching race and racism, leadership in a critically reflective key, and team teaching as critical reflection. In addition, all chapters have been thoroughly updated and expanded to align with today's classrooms, whether online or face-to-face, in large lecture formats or small groups. In his own personal voice Stephen Brookfield draws from over 45 years of experience to illustrate the clear benefits of critical reflection. Assumptions guide practice and only when we base our actions on accurate assumptions will we achieve the results we want. Educators with the courage to challenge their own assumptions in an effort to improve learning are the invaluable role models our students need. Becoming a Critically Reflective Teacher provides the foundational information and practical tools that help teachers reach their true potential.
