Performance Management of Integrated Systems and its Applications in Software Engineering

This book presents a key solution for current and future technological issues, adopting an integrated system approach with a combination of software engineering applications. Focusing on how software dominates and influences the performance, reliability, maintainability and availability of complex integrated systems, it proposes a comprehensive method of improving the entire process. The book provides numerous qualitative and quantitative analyses and examples of varied systems to help readers understand and interpret the derived results and outcomes. In addition, it examines and reviews foundational work associated with decision and control systems for information systems, to inspire researchers and industry professionals to develop new and integrated foundations, theories, principles, and tools for information systems. It also offers guidance and suggests best practices for the research community and practitioners alike. The book’s twenty-six chapters examine and address current and future research topics in areas like vulnerability analysis, secured software requirements analysis, progressive models for planning and enhancing system efficiency, cloud computing, healthcare management, and integrating data-information-knowledge in decision-making. As such it enables organizations to adopt integrated approaches to system and software engineering, helping them implement technological advances and drive performance. This in turn provides actionable insights on each and every technical and managerial level so that timely action-based decisions can be taken to maintain a competitive edge. Featuring conceptual work and best practices in integrated systems and software engineering applications, this book is also a valuable resource for all researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, and management professionals with an interest in the fields of e-commerce, cloud computing, software engineering, software & system security and analysis, data-information-knowledge systems and integrated systems.

Building High performance People and Organizations

Business success depends on employee innovation, drive, skill, endurance, and dedication. Engaged employees, studies show, provide tangible advantages to the organization and its bottom line: greater customer satisfaction, reduced turnover, higher productivity, improved profitability, better safety results, and higher stock prices. In contrast, the Gallup Organization has discovered that disengaged workers cost U.S. business between $250 billion and $350 billion each year. How do you engage employees and, in turn, create the high-performance organization? With a different emphasis in each volume, that's what this set is all about. Volume 1: The New Employer-Employee Relationship Volume 2: The Engaged Workplace: Organizational Strategies Volume 3: Case Studies and Conversations From the latest theories on motivation to innovations in HR to methods to increased employee retention, it provides the essential insights and tools managers, leaders, and HR people need to find new ways to succeed--while keeping employees happy, productive, and loyal. Employees know that cradle-to-grave--or even week-to-week--employment security is a thing of the past, and that they are at the helm of their own career ship. Discerning consumers in the employment marketplace, they therefore seek employment opportunities that speak not only to their wallets and life circumstances, but also to their desire to find work that provides purpose and passion. How can employers meet these needs and create a team of engaged employees? That's a large question, and one that spans a spectrum of issues that includes career development, human resource management, and the alignment between individual and organizational goals. In these three volumes, leaders and managers will find answers. They feature articles, interviews, and reports from academics, psychologists, managers in the practical corporate world, and experts in career management. Despite what Donald Trump might say, work is personal, and the ways in which individuals navigate the organizational environment--and businesses organize to seek, attract, and retain the best employees--is of primary concern. That goes double in these turbulent times, when job security is at stake, cynicism rampant, and loyalty at risk. This set: *Covers both theories and practices driving the development of the modern employment relationship--from both employee and organizational perspectives. *Touches on the timely issues of career management, balance of personal and professional goals, and, for organizations, finding and retaining the best employees and creating workplace cultures that inspire them to do their best work. *Provides principles and practices that can be used by companies of all sizes, in all sectors, and in all parts of the world. *Features an all-star cast of contributors from corporate leadership, academia, practice, and consulting; special elements include interviews with business leaders and many best practice examples. Building High-Performance People and Organizations connects the dots so employers can maintain a loyal, satisfied, and productive workforce. Volume 1: The New Employer-Employee Relationship This volume looks at trends in demographics and the general business environment leading to and driving the concept of employee engagement. It addresses such issues as changing workforce demographics, essential considerations in using employeesurveys, building a high-performance culture, measuring and managing human capital, engagement and change management, managing virtual work teams, and the impact of globalization and technology on the employer-employee relationship. Volume 2: The Engaged Workplace: Organizational Strategies This volume focuses on real-world organizational strategies to find, develop, and retain the best employees, with an emphasis on innovative practices in both the U.S. and internationally. Topics covered include hiring and staffing strategies, the essential elements of work/life balance,

Integration of Performance Management into the Application Lifecycle

Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: Despite the widespread recognition that performance is important to the success of a project, many software products fail to respond fast enough to user requests or to handle a certain amount of parallel business transactions. This is because nowadays projects are result-oriented where the focus is on functionality to be implemented. Such projects do not pay high attention to application performance because it still does not have the particular importance that unit testing for example has. Moreover today s development models usually consider performance management only in a limited way within their lifecycle and often follow what is known as the fix it later approach. The fix it later approach concentrates on software correctness and defers performance considerations to the integration testing phase where additional hardware is added or a system is tuned when performance issues are detected. The problem of neglecting performance management is that performance issues often do not emerge until an application is put into production, where it is likely to suffer the consequences of a performance failure. The consequences of performance failures can be increased operational costs, increased development and hardware costs, and damaged customer relations. If severe performance issues are discovered during production, it may be too expensive to re-design a system or even impossible to add additional hardware in order to meet performance objectives. Such projects are likely to be canceled and their costs will be unrecoverable. To avoid such situations, performance management should be integrated into an application s lifecycle from the beginning. This means that performance objectives have to be defined early within a project and continually verified as an application evolves. Having performance management integrated from the beginning allows to reduce overall project risk and costs because performance issues can be spotted and corrected early in the lifecycle and even before end users are affected. Furthermore an application is extensively tested for its ability of reaching performance objectives before it is deployed to a production environment and exposed to real users. Public Policy and Performance Management in Democratic Systems

This book applies various theoretical tools to explore the advantages and disadvantages of performance management systems, the ways in which they can be improved, and the strategies through which they can be designed and integrated into the policy making process. By providing both theoretical insights and practical applications, it offers a unique perspective. Using four methods of research that have been rarely applied in the performance management literature: formal (game-theoretical) modelling, operational management, new institutionalism, and cross country statistical comparisons based on international data sets, the book illuminates different aspects of performance management systems in the public sector. It offers an integrative theoretical framework for explaining and designing such systems and their integration into the policy making process, and will open up new avenues of research, expose scholars and students to new methodological tools and equip public officials, politicians and citizens with practical methods for improving the performance of the public sector.
