Mad Movies with the LA Connection

Before Mad Movies and the L. A. Connection became a television show, it played
as a live event. In 1977, Kent Skov founded the L.A. Connection comedy troupe.
Skov recalls, “We grew to a pretty large repertory group pretty quickly. I started ...

Mad Movies with the LA Connection

Shirley Temple possessed by demons? Danny Kaye singing like Michael Jackson? Are the characters in Night of the Living Dead planning a party? There’s nothing wrong with your television set. It’s Mad Movies with the L.A. Connection, the television show that ran from 1985-1989 in the wee hours of the night. Founded in 1977, The L.A. Connection is still going strong with sketch comedy, improv and “mock dubbing” of movies and television. Author Mike White (Impossibly Funky: A Cashiers du Cinemart Collection) looks at the history of The L.A. Connection and their many projects from Flicke of the Night to Reefer Madness II, to Blobermouth, and beyond. “… a slim yet incredibly informative chronicle of how improve comedy troupe The L.A. Connection transformed a popular stage routine – redubbing old films for a live crowd – into one of ‘80s TV’s ‘best kept secrets.’ Premiering in 1985, airing on independent stations across the country (as well as later reruns on Nick At Night) and lasting 26 episodes, the show edited hoary feature-length films down to easy-to-digest, half-hour chunks, then gave ‘em all-new, wacky dialogue. In addition to reminiscences from L.A. Connection founder Kent Skov and colleagues, who recall the creative energy and technical work that went into making this outlandish show, Mike White fills out his 122-page softcover with a brief history of ‘mock dub’ cinema, the birth of the L.A. Connection, an episode guide, rare photos, plus the group’s other film-dubbing projects.” - Shock Cinema

Rebuilding Community Connections Mediation and Restorative Justice in Europe

Rebuilding community connections outlines the main features of restorative justice, including different models and research findings, and proposes guidelines for setting up programmes. It also identifies problems and ways of dealing with them. This guide provides essential information for those planning to introduce restorative justice, in particular countries in central and eastern Europe. For countries that have already done so, it offers an opportunity to review practice in the light of experience and research elsewhere. -- Council of Europe.

North south Linkages and Connections in Continental and Diaspora African Literatures

This volume collects some of the best lectures at the African Literature Association's 25th annual conference held in 1999. The conference brought together for the first time a large number of scholars, creative writers and artists from Northern Africa and their counterparts from Sub- Saharan Africa. The conference and this collection highlight the inspiring and stimulating dialogue between two literary and cultural areas that have often been artificially compartmentalised. The essays draw suprising connections and illustrate the breadth and dynamism of African literature.

Connections After Colonialism

Contributing to the historiography of transnational and global transmission of ideas, Connections after Colonialism examines relations between Europe and Latin America during the tumultuous 1820s. In the Atlantic World, the 1820s was a decade marked by the rupture of colonial relations, the independence of Latin America, and the ever-widening chasm between the Old World and the New. Connections after Colonialism, edited by Matthew Brown and Gabriel Paquette, builds upon recent advances in the history of colonialism and imperialism by studying former colonies and metropoles through the same analytical lens, as part of an attempt to understand the complex connections—political, economic, intellectual, and cultural—between Europe and Latin America that survived the demise of empire. Historians are increasingly aware of the persistence of robust links between Europe and the new Latin American nations. This book focuses on connections both during the events culminating with independence and in subsequent years, a period strangely neglected in European and Latin American scholarship. Bringing together distinguished historians of both Europe and America, the volume reveals a new cast of characters and relationships ranging from unrepentant American monarchists, compromise seeking liberals in Lisbon and Madrid who envisioned transatlantic federations, and British merchants in the River Plate who saw opportunity where others saw risk to public moralists whose audiences spanned from Paris to Santiago de Chile and plantation owners in eastern Cuba who feared that slave rebellions elsewhere in the Caribbean would spread to their island. Connections

Have you ever wondered how the internal space of our brain connects with the external space of society? Drawing on hermeneutics and neuroscience Stephen Reyna develops an anthropological theory that explains the relationship between the biological and the cultural. Recent popular interest in the brain is evident, and now social anthropologists are starting to consider connections between science and anthropology. Reyna is an anthropologist prepared to tackle big and difficult questions. This accessibly written book will cause quite a stir in anthropology, and will appeal to those interested in the mysteries of the brain.
