I loved this book' James Nestor, bestselling author of Breath 'Moving, raw and unflinching' Julia Samuel, bestselling author of This Too Shall Pass 'Incredible storytelling' Dr Rangan Chatterjee, bestselling author of Feel Better in 5 ____________________________________________________________________________ How do you carry on when things go deadly wrong? When Dr Rahul Jandial operated on Karina, an eleven-year-old girl whose spinal cord was splitting in two, he had to make an impossible decision. He followed his head over his gut and Karina was left permanently paralysed, altering both patient and surgeon's lives for ever. This decision would haunt Rahul for decades, a constant reminder of the fine line between saving and damaging a life. As one of the world's leading brain surgeons, Rahul is the last hope for patients with extreme forms of cancer. In treating them, he has observed humanity at its most raw and most robust. He has journeyed to unimaginable extremes with them, guiding them through the darkest moments of their lives. Life on a Knife's Edge is Rahul's poetic and beautifully written account of the resilience, courage and belief he has witnessed in his patients, and the lessons about human nature he has learned from them. It is about the impossible choices he has to make, and the fateful consequences he is forced to live with. From challenging the ethics of surgical practices, to helping a patient with locked-in syndrome communicate her dying wish to her family, Rahul shares his extraordinary experiences, revealing the depths of a surgeon's psyche that is continuously pushed to its limits.

The Road to the Top of the Mountain

“This is a story of resilience, positivity, adaptability and love.” – Clare Balding This is the extraordinary story of the road to recovery of Matt who, at the tail end of 2010 at the age of twenty-three, suffered a life-altering brain injury. Awakening from a six-week coma, he couldn’t talk or even sit up in bed unsupported. It was clear that he wouldn’t be able to resume his career as a water sports instructor, nor did it look very likely that he would be able to pursue his passion for skiing. However, Matt had other ideas. When he regained the ability to speak he declared that his first post-injury goal was to be skiing by the end of the year. The fact that he couldn’t actually walk was but an obstacle to be overcome in due course. This turned out to be the first of many more challenging goals yet to come. He was discharged from the hospital after six months of intensive rehabilitation and therapy and only six months left to reach his first goal. The game was most definitely on. Not only did he get back on his skis by November 2011, but in 2018 he went on to graduate with a degree in Sports Journalism and, embracing his now wobbly walk, he embarked on a whole new career as the Wobbly Journo, specialising in writing about free-skiing. The Road to the Top of the Mountain allows the reader to accompany Matt on his recovery path as, supported by friends, family and the ski community at large, he battled his way back to an independent life with many adventures on the way in Europe and America. It also explains in a basic way how the brain works and what happens when it is damaged. It is an uplifting story of great hope and determination as told by his mother, Anne, with contributions from Matt throughout. Praise for the book: “Matt has taken ownership of a bad situation in an immensely inspiring way.” – David Wise, American Skier and Winter Olympic Gold Medalist “Lit by the beacon of wisdom C.R Johnson left him with, Matt shaped an unfortunate event into miraculous achievements.“ – Phil Casabon, Two-time X Games Real Ski Winner “As a passionate skier and physio, meeting Matt was really inspiring… to see the power and faith in coming back so strong after such a gnarly accident and willing to ski again really put everything in perspective.” – Arianna Tricomi, Three-Time Freeride World Tour Ski Women’s Champion “Whatever might be the path that life brings you on, you’ve got to own it rather than let life own you. Matt could have given up. Given up on walking, given up on skiing, given up on studying, given up on so many things that “normal” people do on a daily basis… I’m sure that the thought of giving up never crossed his mind. He owns it big time!” – Markus Eder, Freeride World Tour Ski Men’s Champion and Olympian “Matt Masson has been an incredible journey to partake in – a reminder that true passion helps us overcome even the largest of obstacles.” – Jacob Webster, Swedish Freeskier “A truly remarkable story of incredible courage and tenacity from a young man determined not to let a life-changing injury stop him from fulfilling his dreams.” – Dr. Tania Ahern

Into the Abyss

‘Highly eloquent, fascinating and deeply compassionate’ Henry Marsh, author of Do No Harm We cannot know how to fix a problem until we understand its causes. But even for some of the most common mental health problems, specialists argue over whether the answers lie in the person’s biology, their psychology or their circumstances. As a cognitive neuropsychiatrist, Anthony David brings together many fields of enquiry, from social and cognitive psychology to neurology. The key for each patient might be anything from a traumatic memory to a chemical imbalance, an unhealthy way of thinking or a hidden tumour. Patrick believes he is dead. Jennifer's schizophrenia medication helped with her voices but did it cause Parkinson’s? Emma is in a coma – or is she just refusing to respond? Drawing from Professor David’s career as a clinician and academic, these fascinating case studies reveal the unique complexity of the human mind, stretching the limits of our understanding.

Breath

THE PHENOMENAL INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER - OVER A MILLION COPIES SOLD WORLDWIDE SHORTLISTED FOR THE ROYAL SOCIETY BOOK PRIZE 'Who would have thought something as simple as changing the way we breathe could be so revolutionary for our health, from snoring to allergies to immunity? A fascinating book, full of dazzling revelations' Dr Rangan Chatterjee There is nothing more essential to our health and wellbeing than breathing: take air in, let it out, repeat 25,000 times a day. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. In Breath, journalist James Nestor travels the world to discover the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. Modern research is showing us that making even slight adjustments to the way we inhale and exhale can: - jump-start athletic performance - rejuvenate internal organs - halt snoring, allergies, asthma and autoimmune disease, and even straighten scoliotic spines None of this should be possible, and yet it is. Drawing on thousands of years of ancient wisdom and cutting-edge studies in pulmonology, psychology, biochemistry and human physiology, Breath turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head. You will never breathe the same again.

As a nurse, Sheba has worked in a variety of correctional facilities from the from the smallest county jail to some of the largest penitentiaries in the country. Believing her career is a calling from on high, she walks among some of the worst of the worst every day.
