Luftwaffe KG 200

Shrouded in secrecy during World War II and obscured by myth ever since, Kampfgeschwader 200 (200th Bomb Wing) remains one of the Luftwaffe's most fascinating formations. Considered a special-operations unit, KG 200 delivered spies while flying captured Allied aircraft, conducted clandestine reconnaissance missions, and tested Germany's newest weapons--such as a piloted version of the V-1 rocket (essentially a German kamikaze). Covers some of the KG 200's more sinister operations, including suicide missions and the unit's role in defeating a French Resistance insurrection in June-July 1944 Includes information on aircraft used and known personnel losses Features rare photos and color illustrations of KG 200 aircraft

The JG 26 War Diary

"[These books give] a chronology of the unit's activities, using documentary sources, JG 26 archives and veteran's own stories. Volume one covers the period from 1939 to 1942 and contains interviews with the veterans of the JG26 unit, Allied records, radio intelligence, national archives of Germany, the UK and USAF Historical Research Agency and post-war research, to provide a daily account of the unit's activities-- as only two of the 30 volumes of the unit's official diary survived the war. Volume two takes the JG26 from the beginning of 1943, when the American 8th Air Force first began to make its presence felt over occupied Europe, until the end of the war"--Publisher's description.

The Bomber War

The bomber campaign against Germany is one of the most contentious of World War II. Was anything achieved by the deaths of thousands of German civilians-many of them women and children? Or were all means justified against Nazi Germany? Acclaimed military historian Robin Neillands examines every detail of the allied campaign led by British Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur "Bomber" Harris: the strengths and fundamental flaws, the technical difficulties and developments and, above all, the day-to-day, night-by-night endurance of the crews flying to the limit in discomfort and danger, facing flak and enemy fire. Personal experiences of British, American, Canadian, Australian and other ally fliers play a key part in this account, along with those of German airmen and civilians. Though The Bomber War discusses Guernica and the destruction of Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it concentrates on the European theater, on Germany's air war against the allies - over Warsaw, Rotterdam, London and Coventry-which led the fierce allied raids carried out against Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin and the Ruhr and-most notorious of all-the tremendous destruction of Dresden in the last months of the war. Robin Neillands also examines the complex moral issues involved in the air war, and of the case made against "Bomber" Harris. This is a timely addition to the history of conflict; the age of free-fall bombs has passed, but many veterans-on both sides-are still alive to state their case, and to tell a knew generation what their war was like.

The German Air Force 1933 1945

It ensured that whatever was decided in the Reich's Chancellery, and whatever was done in the front line and in the factories, defeat wouild result. In this, the first detailed, comprehensive history of the Luftwaffe since 1946, Matthew Cooper describes the disintegration of its high command and the disastrous leadership of Göring. He analyses the development of the Luftwaffe's strategy, and with it its aircraft, and its decisions regarding dive bombing, heavy bombers and jet fighters. He describes the Luftwaffe's campaigns and shows clearly how from the moment it was committed to battle in 1939 it was doomed to failure in any prolonged world war. With hindsight it is possible to see that its one chance of avoiding defeat lay in destroying the RAF in the summer of 1940 and this book carefully analyses just why, when it was within an ace of success, the Luftwaffe gave victory to its enemies.

Tapping Hitler s Generals

Between 1942 and 1945 the British Intelligence Service undertook an extraordinary surveillance operation. In the sedate surroundings of Trent Park, a large mansion with extensive grounds in North London, they used state of the art bugging equipment to listen in on the private conversations of captured high-ranking German officers. Unlike the countless postwar interrogations, these were unstructured conversations held freely among the officers, during which they touched upon the most sensitive issues. The officers discuss the July Plot of 1944, the failed attempt to assassinate Hitler, collaboration with the enemy, and their experience of German war crimes. In this major new work Professor Neitzel has examined these incredible transcripts in depth for the first time. His findings address important questions regarding the officers' attitudes towards the German leadership and Nazi policies: How did the German generals judge the overall war situation? From what date did they consider it lost? How did they react to the attempt on Hitler's life in July 1944? What knowledge did they have of the atrocities, either through their own experiences or based on the reports of others? Includes biographies of all the German officers who appear in the transcripts. This research is a must for any serious scholar of the period and anyone interested in exploring the truth behind the image of an 'unblemished Wehrmacht'. - Jacket cover.

Luftwaffe Victorious

At the outbreak of World War II the Luftwaffe was considered by many to be the world's most powerful air force. However, during the summer of 1940 they suffered a dramatic defeat during the Battle of Britain, and by May 1945 the Germans had surrendered to the Allies and the Third Reich collapsed. What went wrong? How could things have been different? In this most engagingly written and thought provoking addition to the fascinating Greenhill alternate history series, aviation historian Mike Spick asks these very questions, envisaging a dramatic alternate reality in which the Luftwaffe succeeded in defeating Allied forces.
