The Classical Mandolin

The Classical Mandolin

Although the mandolin is now regarded as a marginal instrument in the classical music world, a century ago it was one of the most widely played instruments in Europe and North America. Regularly used in operas and symphonies, and forming the basis of plucked instrument orchestras, the mandolin could also be heard in major concert halls. The Classical Mandolin traces the rise of the modern Neapolitan mandolin, examines the lives and works of leading specialist composers (such as Raffaele Calace and Carlo Munier), and looks at its use by mainstream composers from Verdi and Mahler to Schoenberg and Boulez. The mandolin's enduring popularity in folk music is also discussed. Sparks looks finally at present-day orchestras and soloists, examines aspects of technique, and offers guidance on specialist organisations worldwide.

French Court Dance and Dance Music

Growing interest in classic French music and theatrical entertainment has brought with it awareness of the prominent role of dance in French culture of the 17th and 18th centuries. Primary sources from which social and theatrical dances of the period may be reconstructed have inspired much enthusiasm on the part of performers and students of the French classic period. The sources described in this volume consist of printed matter issued during the reigns of Louis XIV, XV, and XVI, representing the period 1643-1789. The work focuses upon writings that bear directly or indirectly upon French court dance and its music, its practitioners in France, and its imitators abroad.

The Early Mandolin

The name "mandolin" was used to refer to two quite different instruments: the gut-stringed mandolino, played with the fingers, and the later metal-stringed Neapolita mandoline, which was played with a plectrum. This is the first book devoted exclusively to these two early instruments about which information in reference books is scant and often erroneous. The authors uncover their rich and varied musical history, examining contemporary playing techniques and revealing the full extent of the instruments' individual repertories, which include works by Vivaldi, Sammartini, Stamitz, and Beethoven. The book's ultimate aim is to help today's players to produce artistically satisfying performances through an understanding of the nature and historical playing style of these unjustly neglected instruments.
