Q: What drove you to write your book Never Stop to Think . . . Do I Have a Place for This? Carter: I mean, I guess I wrote the book to give people—I mean, all my books are about the same thing. They're all about giving yourself ...

Junk

When journalist and author Alison Stewart was confronted with emptying her late parents' overloaded basement, a job that dragged on for months, it got her thinking: How did it come to this? Why do smart, successful people hold on to old Christmas bows, chipped knick-knacks, and books they will likely never reread? Junk details Stewart's three-year investigation into America's stuff. Stewart rides along with junk removal teams like Trash Daddy, Annie Haul, and Junk Vets. She goes backstage at Antiques Roadshow, and learns what makes for compelling junk-based television with the executive producer of Pawn Stars. And she even investigates the growing problem of space junk—23,000 pieces of manmade debris orbiting the planet at 17,500 mph, threatening both satellites and human space exploration. But it's not all dire. Readers will also learn that there are creative solutions to America's crushing consumer culture. The author visits with Deron Beal, founder of FreeCyle, an online community of people who would rather give away than throw away their no-longer-needed possessions. She spends a day at a Repair Café, where volunteer tinkerers bring new life to broken appliances, toys, and just about anything. Junk is a delightful journey through 250-mile-long yard sales, resale shops, and packrat dens, both human and rodent, that for most readers will look surprisingly familiar.

A beautiful collection of stories by a pre-eminent writer, shortlisted for major awards. Fiona Kidman has a genius for peeling back the lives of ordinary people to reveal their hidden passions and complexities. Ranging in time from the colonial period to the present day, these stories by one of New Zealand's foremost writers are beautifully crafted, intriguing and evocative. True Power

Hello to whoever is reading this. Let me introduce myself. My name is Sean Soulflight. In these two stories youre going to read Im going to be telling you about my life at this new school I went to. In this time I learned a lot and taught a little too. I made friends, some of which I never expected. The real reason though that Im writing this story down is because I want others to know what I know. Each story has a lesson that everybody should learn and situations that most people can relate to. The two stories you are going to read are in order of the things that happened. The first is called the boy white hair and the second is called true power. By the time you finish reading this I hope you feel a little wiser and a whole lot more powerful. So without further ado, let the first story begin.

The Irish Affair

“You never stop to think, do you, Harry? Well consider this—your farm renovations have come at the cost of hundreds of dead, merchant sailors. Your actions are bloody treasonous! My problem is what to do now.” Harry flushed.

The Irish Affair

With the terrifying and seemingly inevitable war between Britain, France and Germany looming like storm clouds on the horizon, Scottish architect Lawrence McKellan uproots his Edinburgh household and moves his wife, two children, and brother to the safety of Ireland’s controversial neutrality. He purchases properties in the rural setting of County Mayo, and sets his wife, Helen, up as a hotelier and his brother, Harry, as a gentleman farmer. While somewhat jarred by Lawrence’s compulsory resettlement, the family adjust quickly to the beauty of their surroundings and the charm and culture of the Irish people. Unfortunately, even Ireland’s verdant countryside is marred by shades of grey. And, when Lawrence joins British Intelligence, a shroud of secrecy soon entangles him leaving Helen to battle inner turmoil and Harry to pursue his own agenda with severe consequences. Cooper O’Neil is Irish through and through. When he was only a child, his Catholic father—an ardent IRA supporter—was brutally killed for his beliefs and his sister, Sophie, was marred for life in an ambush by a group of Protestant schoolgirls. The British had been a thorn in the side of Ireland for generations, causing Cooper more anguish by the time he reaches his teens than most people face in a lifetime. Now a hardened man with a steely determination to scrape British shite from Ireland’s weathered boots, Cooper has more power than a man of his nature should probably yield. Shaped by his past, Cooper takes his pain and anger and sharpens them into a thorn of his own. When temptation and ambition pair with distance and deceit, the innocent and guilty are both driven to acts they never thought possible and consequences they never imagined.

After Knills invites them over for a quiet drink, the Stephen and his family learn that the man's wife was kidnapped one dreadful night, never to be heard from again. A private detective had failed to unearth anything, and Knills pleads Stephen to help him. Pockets now full of money, he sets out to find out what happened. But soon, things take a turn for the worse, and Stephen himself becomes a suspect for a crime he didn't commit. With seemingly nobody to trust, Stephen finds himself in a race against time, and odds are not in his favor. Can he piece together the puzzle, find the kidnapper and save himself? Passive aggression. Road rage. Snarky tweets. Queue-jumpers. Idiots who are #justsaying. Fat shamers. Victim blaming. Furious waitresses who refuse to sell you a hot dog... We are ruder than we’ve ever been. In this incisive and very funny book, Danny Wallace investigates the new wave of rudeness that threatens to overwhelm us. He travels the world, visiting our rudest critics, interviewing psychologists, psychiatrists, bell boys, cab drivers, bin men, barristers, politicians, a limo driver called José and at least one expert in cooked meat production. In doing so he uncovers the hidden truths behind what makes us rude, whether it can be caught, and how one small moment of rudeness—like being declined a hotdog—can snowball into disaster. From the jihadist who launched a blistering attack on the “bad manners” of his fellow ISIS militants, to the mayor in Bogota who recruited an army of mimes to highlight inconsiderate driving—this is a very funny and powerful exploration into the way humans work and why it is surely time for an anti-rudeness revolution.
