Dying Death and Grief in an Online Universe

"[This book] is an excellent resource for the diverse practitioners and educators who are involved in this nascent area."--Cruse Bereavement Care "[This] book is innovative and timely, challengingthe reader to think 'out of the box.' Sofka,Cupit, and Gilbert provide a framework to explore thanatologyin an online universe while encouraging continuousresearch to adapt to this ever-changing digital world."--Death Studies "Historically we have always employed our foremost technology in the service of the dead. We have used whatever we had at our disposal to mourn, to support, to share memories and to tell stories. Carla J. Sofka, Illene Noppe Cupit, and Kathleen R. GilbertÖ reaffirm that principle reminding us that this new digital world both offers dramatic technologies and creates considerable opportunities to deal with dying, death, and grief. The editors are extraordinarily sensitive to the multiple ways that this new technology has impacted upon the death system or the ways that a society organizes behavior around dying and death. Dying, Death, and Grief in an Online Universe is bound to be a classic." Kenneth J Doka, PhD Professor, The College of New Rochelle Senior Consultant, The Hospice Foundation of America Modern communication technology has profoundly influenced societal practices and views about dying, death, and loss. This text, written for death educators, clinicians, researchers, and students of thanatology, provides current information about "thanatechnology," the communication technology used in providing death education, grief counseling, and thantology research. The book offers a broad overview of how the communication technology revolution affects individuals coping with end-of-life issues, death-related and non-death loss and grief, and implications of the "digital divide" between those who are knowledgeable about and have access to modern technology, and those who are not. It describes the proliferation of online support groups and social network sites to cope with loss, and mechanisms for the memorialization and commemoration of loss. It also highlights blogging as a mechanism for storytelling and SKYPE as a communication tool during times of loss and grief. The unique issue of disenfranchised grief experienced by online community members is also explored along with ethical issues. Appendices provide guidance regarding the online availability of different types of informational support, tools to evaluate the integrity of online resources, and ethical standards. Key Features: Examines the ways in which modern communication technology has revolutionized societal practices and views about dying, death, and loss Offers time-tested strategies for providing death education online Addresses ethical issues related to availability and use of technology Explores the implications of the "digital divide" between technology and non-technology users in relation to issues of death and loss Analyzes how technology has shaped and changed thanatology research

Erotic Universe

This comprehensive volume explores the relationship between sex and the fantastic in science fiction and fantasy literature. More than a dozen scholars have contributed essays in which they discuss almost two hundred novels, short stories, tales, plays, poems, myths, and nearly one hundred authors--from Aldiss to Zelazny. The collection is divided into three main sections, the first of which is devoted to the theoretical analysis of the relationship between sexuality and the fantastic. This section contains essays on sexuality and the allure of fantasy, and sexuality and knowledge in science fiction. The second section turns to thematic analyses and includes essays that explore such themes as sexuality and death, forbidden sexuality, sexual attitudes and the search for ethics in contemporary culture, sex and technology, sexual encounters with aliens, sexuality and comedy, and homosexuality in fantasy and science fiction. The third section, devoted to feminist views of sexuality in fantastic literature, includes several studies of the depiction of sexuality in the works of female fantasists, and focuses most closely on Russ, Piercy, LeGuin, and Carter. Examined here is the potential use of science fiction as a vehicle for theorizing about women and for questioning their condition in society. The volume also includes an introductory overview and critical commentary on the literature and a comprehensive, contributor-compiled bibliography of primary works and scholarship on sexuality and related issues in fantastic literature.

The Vision of love s Rare Universe

We may especially note that as compared to his somewhat apologetic attitude
towards incest in the Preface to The Revolt of Islam , Shelley is more direct and
frank in employing the sister - spouse relationship in Epipsychidion . It remains a
fact ...

The Vision of love s Rare Universe

This study interprets and evaluates Shelley's poem Epipsychidion and assumes that although the poem is an individual whole, it is a demonstration of Shelley's poetic consciousness, centered around his conceptions of the imagination and of love. The author investigates how the poem deals with Shelley's vision of "love's rare Universe." Verma analyzes the influences of Dante's Vita Nuova and Plato's Symposium on the poem and on the poet's vision of "love's rare Universe." Through a study of the imagination and "the woman" (the epipsyche) in Shelley's work, Verma argues that Epipsychidion is an anagogic allegory like Dante's Vita Nuova, but also a poetic discourse on love like Plato's Symposium. This evaluation of the quality of Shelley's vision in light of his relation to Plato, Dante and Neoplatonism, will show readers that Shelley's quest and his discourse on love are moral and spiritual. This study, one of the only book-length studies of Shelley's poem, will appeal to students in advanced courses and graduate seminars. General readers of Shelley and Romantic literature everywhere will also want to have a copy of this thorough and perceptive analysis.
