Get a concise introduction to Spring, the popular open source framework for building lightweight enterprise applications on the Java platform. This example-driven book for Java developers delves into the framework’s basic features, as well as complex concepts such as containers. You’ll learn how Spring makes Java Messaging Service easier to work with, and how its support for Hibernate helps you work with data persistence and retrieval. In this revised edition of Just Spring, you’ll get your hands deep into sample code, beginning with a problem that illustrates Spring’s core principle: dependency injection. In the chapters that follow, author Madhusudhan Konda walks you through features that underlie the solution. Dive into the new chapter on advanced concepts, such as bean scopes and property editors Learn dependency injection through a simple object coupling problem Tackle the framework’s core fundamentals, including beans and bean factories Discover how Spring makes the Java Messaging Service API easier to use Learn how Spring has revolutionized data access with Java DataBase Connectivity (JDBC) Use Spring with the Hibernate framework to manipulate data as objects

JDBC has simplified database access in Java applications, but a few nagging wrinkles remain—namely, persisting Java objects to relational databases. With this book, you’ll learn how the Spring Framework makes that job incredibly easy with dependency injection, template classes, and object-relational-mapping (ORM). Through sample code, you’ll discover how Spring streamlines the use of JDBC and ORM tools such as Hibernate, the Java Persistence API (JPA), and Java Data Objects (JDO). If you’re a Java developer familiar with Spring (perhaps through O’Reilly’s Just Spring tutorial) and want to advance your data access skills, this book shows you how. Learn how to use Spring’s basic and advanced data access tools Work with Spring’s JdbcTemplate class to separate non-critical code from business code Eliminate placeholder variables in your queries with the NamedParameterJdbcTemplate class Use Spring’s template classes to perform batch executions Operate inserts on database tables without writing any SQL statements Learn about Spring’s support for Hibernate as an object-relational-mapping tool Use JPA as a standards-based ORM—alone or with Spring support Move data from a relational to a non-relational database with JDO

There aren?t many Americans who didn?t feel a lump in their throat watching Cal Ripken, Jr. take a historic jog around the bases on the evening of September 6, 1995--the night he smashed Lou Gehrig?s record number of 2,130 consecutively played games. But, as "the hardest working man in baseball" will tell you, he was just doing his job. And now he tells you just how he does it, why he does it, and how it makes him feel. With the candor and grace that have endeared him to fans everywhere, Cal Ripken, Jr. tells the story of his journey to the major leagues: of his early childhood and life with a baseball manager for a father; his stint in the minors, working his way up from the Rookie Leagues to Triple-A; and finally to the permanent call from Baltimore where he began the drive to an All-Star career. Cal talks with warmth of his mentors and teammates, and with honesty of the Orioles? roller-coaster ride from the pennant to a lamentable 0-21 start in the eighties. He reveals his innermost thoughts on the game, and leads us through his strategies at the plate and on the field. Best of all, Cal reveals what makes him tick: his commitment to the game, to his family, to his career, and to the team. In this rich and rewarding memoir, we find out why he?s credited with putting the "great" back into America?s greatest game: it?s the only way he knows.

Spring training is a time of renewal for baseball, when teams and fans descend on Florida and Arizona to begin the ever hopeful new season. The pace is a little slower, the fans are closer to the action, and the players are more accessible: the sport returns to its idyllic roots. When the first edition of this book was released, 18 of the MLB teams trained in Florida and 12 in Arizona. As 2013 arrives each league consists of 15 teams; together they utilize 14 parks in Florida and 10 in Arizona. This heavily illustrated work dedicates a chapter to each park, including modern Cactus League marvels like Camelback Ranch and Salt River Fields, and Grapefruit League bastions like Joker Marchant Stadium and McKechnie Field. Florida's Fenway Park replica, which opened in 2012, is included. In addition to profiling the five parks that have opened since the first edition, the author has updated the other chapters. Each provides a description of the park, and a recounting of its history, followed by a summary of the home team or teams' spring history. Next is a review of the park's seating, concessions and fan traditions. Each chapter concludes with information about nearby baseball landmarks and attractions.
