As the heart, so is the life. The within is ceaselessly becoming the without. Nothing remains unrevealed. That which is hidden is but for a time; it ripens and comes forth at last. Seed, tree, blossom, and fruit are the fourfold order of the universe. From the state of a man's heart proceed the conditions of his life. His thoughts blossom into deeds; and his deeds bear the fruitage of character and destiny.

"As a Man Thinketh" presents the power of thought, and particularly the use and application of thought to achieve happiness, personal goals and defeat our deepest issues. The book is simple, so that all can easily grasp and follow its teaching, and put into practice the methods which it advises. It shows how, in its own thought-world, every person holds the key to every condition, good or bad, that enters into their life, and that, by working patiently and intelligently upon their thoughts, they can remake their life, and transform their circumstances. This edition also includes the sequel to this famous book, "Out from the Heart."

Man is the keeper of his heart; the watcher of his mind; the solitary guard of his citadel of life. As such, he can be diligent or negligent. He can keep his heart more and more carefully. He can more strenuously watch and purify his mind; and he can guard against the thinking of unrighteous thoughts-this is the way of enlightenment and bliss. On the other hand, he can live loosely and carelessly, neglecting the supreme task of rightfully ordering his life-this is the way of self-delusion and suffering. Let a man realize that life in its totality proceeds from the mind, and lo, the way of blessedness is opened up to him! For he will then discover that he possesses the power to rule his mind, and to fashion it in accordance with his Ideal. So will he elect to strongly and steadfastly walk those pathways of thought and action which are altogether excellent. To him, life will become beautiful and sacred; and sooner or later, he will put to flight all evil, confusion, and suffering. For it is impossible for a man to fall short of liberation, enlightenment, and peace, who guards with unwearying diligence the gateway of his heart.

The beach has always been a safe place for me where the concerns of life all but disappear. One late afternoon I was walking directly into the sun. I barely noticed its final descent toward the horizon. As I glanced back, I caught my shadow. It seemed so big; my heart was imprisoned by an imperfect replica, an emotional stalker--seen only as I turned away from the sun's radiance. It was then I realized when I walk facing the "Light" I will see no shadow. Only a life lived "out from the shadow" will experience the grandeur of God; the Accuser's maligning voice will be stilled. That day I came to grasp that the "shadow" of a person's past is not how God sees any of His children. "Dr. Effler writes with clarity, biblical expertise, personal counseling experience, and a passion for each minister to succeed in Christ. This book will change your life in a marvelous way." -Bill Leonard, PhD, BCCC, BCCTR, Center for Ministerial Care and Director, Church of God International Headquarters "Out From the Shadows creates a therapeutic approach to the creation account found in Genesis. This material resonates with the substance abuse community by identifying possible areas of brokenness often overlooked. Boldly discussing sin rather than symptomology, Out From the Shadows cogently dissects root issues throughout the counseling process. Although primarily intended for pastoral counselors, this information can be utilized in a wide array of counseling venues." -Austin Davis LPC-S Clinical Director at Stonegate Center

This is a character study of a youngster who immigrated to the US shortly before its involvement in WWI and the progeny of that family. His enlistment in the army resulted in a debilitating injury while serving overseas and was a factor in his later involvement in gambling as a means of earning a living. His reputation as a "straight arrow" while involved with some gamblers in the Chicago area provided the impetus for his developing a casino in Las Vegas. As the story unfolds it becomes obvious that there are some historical truths in evidence even though the characters are all fictional. As this primary character lives out his life his progeny take over the role as the main character. The historical development of Las Vegas as a gaming center is reviewed when each of the characters come into the picture.
