Industrial Process for Direct Pelletization of Molten Pharmaceutical Polymer

Brigham Young University’s Mechanical Engineering’s Capstone program was sponsored to produce a novel palletization process for molten pharmaceutical polymer. This is bleeding edge technology that has high potential to increase production of micro pellet pharmaceuticals that are highly insoluble and highly viscous. A brief overview of state-of-the-art pharmaceutical palletization techniques is presented. The selection of each component for the design is justified, and each component is individually verified through experiment. The overall design successfully creates pellets from molten pharmaceutical shots, but does not currently meet FDA guidance for variance in pellet weight. Based on the current results, this design is expected to be capable of meeting this FDA guidance with proper tuning of parameters and optimized control of equipment.
