Post Mortem

A jogger is running near the perimeter of the African Lion Safari theme park in southern Ontario when he stumbles across a near- mummified skeleton in a field. The skeletal remains are studied at the Hamilton morgue by a forensic pathologist, a forensic anthropologist, and a forensic entomologist (known as “the bug lady”). The victim is female, non-Caucasian. But who is she? Enter Hamilton homicide investigator Paul Lahaie and his team. During the investigation, a forensic detective hits upon the secret to cracking the identity of the dead woman. The hardened skin on the fingertips is rehydrated, rolled for prints. And a match is found: Yvette Budram, a woman from Guyana who emigrated to Canada and married a man named Mohan Ramkissoon. Her prints happened to be in the CPIC system because she has a criminal record for uttering death threats against her husband. Detectives search Mohan and Yvette’s Mississauga house. They find a hole cut in the bedroom mattress, and blood residue around it — Yvette’s blood. And her blood on the TV. And in the trunk of Mohan’s car. They believe he drove her body to the country field outside Hamilton and dumped her. A manhunt ensues and Mohan is taken into custody, but he denies it all and points suspicion at a man he claims Yvette had an affair with, whose nickname is “Happy.” This CSI-style story is wrapped up in court with a surprising revelation from a jail cell. There was justice at last for Yvette Budram.

Architecture Post Mortem

Architecture Post Mortem surveys architecture’s encounter with death, decline, and ruination following late capitalism. As the world moves closer to an economic abyss that many perceive to be the death of capital, contraction and crisis are no longer mere phases of normal market fluctuations, but rather the irruption of the unconscious of ideology itself. Post mortem is that historical moment wherein architecture’s symbolic contract with capital is put on stage, naked to all. Architecture is not irrelevant to fiscal and political contagion as is commonly believed; it is the victim and penetrating analytical agent of the current crisis. As the very apparatus for modernity’s guilt and unfulfilled drives-modernity’s debt-architecture is that ideological element that functions as a master signifier of its own destruction, ordering all other signifiers and modes of signification beneath it. It is under these conditions that architecture theory has retreated to an 'Alamo' of history, a final desert outpost where history has been asked to transcend itself. For architecture’s hoped-for utopia always involves an apocalypse. This timely collection of essays reformulates architecture’s relation to modernity via the operational death-drive: architecture is but a passage between life and death. This collection includes essays by Kazi K. Ashraf, David Bertolini, Simone Brott, Peggy Deamer, Didem Ekici, Paul Emmons, Donald Kunze, Todd McGowan, Gevork Hartoonian, Nadir Lahiji, Erika Naginski, and Dennis Maher.

Atlas of Post Mortem Techniques in Neuropathology

This volume was first published in 1982. Hume Adams and Margaret Murray have produced an atlas that illustrates basic post-mortem techniques in neuropathology. It shows how to remove the brain, the spinal cord, samples of peripheral nerve and muscle, the eye and the contents of the orbit, the arteries in the neck that supply the brain and the structures in the base of the skull. These structures can then be examined in a sequence that will help to elucidate the sequence of events leading to a person's death. How a brain should be dissected is also illustrated, and there is a final chapter on brain neuro-anatomy.

Postmortem

As elected coroners came to be replaced by medical examiners with scientific training, the American public became fascinated with their work. From the grisly investigations showcased on highly rated television shows like C.S.I. to the bestselling mysteries that revolve around forensic science, medical examiners have never been so visible—or compelling. They, and they alone, solve the riddle of suspicious death and the existential questions that come with it. Why did someone die? Could it have been prevented? Should someone be held accountable? What are the implications of ruling a death a suicide, a homicide, or an accident? Can medical examiners unmask the perfect crime? Postmortem goes deep inside the world of medical examiners to uncover the intricate web of pathological, social, legal, and moral issues in which they operate. Stefan Timmermans spent years in a medical examiner’s office, following cases, interviewing examiners, and watching autopsies. While he relates fascinating cases here, he is also more broadly interested in the cultural authority and responsibilities that come with being a medical examiner. Although these professionals attempt to remain objective, medical examiners are nonetheless responsible for evaluating subtle human intentions. Consequently, they may end—or start—criminal investigations, issue public health alerts, and even cause financial gain or harm to survivors. How medical examiners speak to the living on behalf of the dead, is Timmermans’s subject, revealed here in the day-to-day lives of the examiners themselves.

Post Mortem Journal Communications from Lawrence of Arabia Through the Mediumship of Jane Sherwood

There is probably no stranger nor more controversial book that Jane Sherwood's report, through automatic writing, of the identity of a communicator from the other side of the grave who chose to call himself 'Scott'. After many years of enforced silence, as a result of a solemn promise given to Scott, Jane Sherwood reveals his true identity, namely, Colonel T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia). Post-Mortem Journalopens at the moment of Lawrence's death when he finds himself lying at the roadside by his shattered motorbike, unaware that he is actually 'dead'. It continues over the years and shows us the development and salvation of a tortured and guilty man who, for the first time, is forced into admitting his weaknesses and vanities during his earthly life and is only now able to come to terms with himself. Such revelations are both harrowing and magnificent. 'As to the validity', says Jane Sherwood, 'of the information contained in "Scott's" journal I can only vouch for my own honesty; what I have received is here set down without addition or modification. The readers must judge of its probability for themselves.'

Postmortem Change in Human and Animal Remains

"Postmortem change in human and animal remains: A Systematic Approach provides a unique, synthetic treatment of postmortem change presented in a systematic fashion with attention to the relative chronologies of both physical and cultural factors that influence human and animal remains. This book integrates reports and observations in the anthropology/archaeology literature with material as appropriate from medicine, pathology, paleopathology, ethnography (cultural anthropology) and the forensic sciences, as well as reporting on original observations by the author. In addition to discussing transformation of skeletal remains (as is the focus of most taphonomic studies in anthropology and archaeology), comprehensive treatment is given to changes in soft tissue remains, as well as to conditions under which such remains may be preserved postmortem. The immediate changes that occur within minutes/hours have been traditionally described by forensic pathologists, while this book "fills in the blanks" between where pathology has traditionally left off, and before anthropology has traditionally begun. It also includes an integrated review of what anthropology traditionally considers. More and more anthropologists and forensic scientists are called upon to systematically interpret postmortem changes "from beginning to end," cutting across various fields of study."--Pub. desc.

The Tower

She closed her eyes and saw, as if on a loop, a repeating backdrop of square windows, blue sky and concrete spinning and passing, passing, passing. She could not escape the horror of it: falling unstoppably, irretrievably until the hard concrete reaches up. That last glimpse of them at the edge. A long-serving beat cop in the Met and a teenage girl fall to their deaths from a tower block in London's East End. Left alive on the roof are a five year old boy and rookie police officer Lizzie Griffiths.
