Praying the Psalms in Christ

Praying the Psalms in Christ

Written centuries before Christ, the Psalms of the Hebrew Bible have been prayed by Christians since the founding of the Church. The early church fathers expounded the psalms in the light of the mystery of Christ, his death and resurrection, and his saving redemption. In this book, a Benedictine monk examines the Christian praying of the Psalms, taking into account modern and contemporary research on the Psalms. Working from the Hebrew text, Fr. Laurence Kriegshauser offers a verse-by-verse commentary on each of the one hundred and fifty psalms, highlighting poetic features such as imagery, rhythm, structure, and vocabulary, as well as theological and spiritual dimensions and the relation of psalms to each other in the smaller collections that make up the whole. The book attempts to integrate modern scholarship on the Psalms with the act of prayer and help Christians pray the psalms with greater understanding of their Christological meaning. The book contains an introduction, a glossary of terms, an index of topics, a table of English renderings of selected Hebrew words, and an index of biblical citations. Praying the Psalms in Christ will be welcomed by students of theology and liturgy, by priests, religious, and laypeople who pray the Liturgy of the Hours, and by all Christians who seek to pray the Psalms with greater profit and fervor.

Praying the Psalms of Jesus

And then in the second half of the book, we will immerse ourselves in psalms that Jesus would have meditated on during his time on earth, focusing on the heart and mind of Jesus as he prayed the psalms.

Praying the Psalms of Jesus

At key moments in his life on earth, Jesus Christ, the very Son of God, turned to the Psalms for words to express his deepest thoughts and emotions. It is not hard to imagine Jesus, his mind and heart saturated with the words and thoughts of the Psalms as they were prayed aloud in the Temple, going off early in the morning to pray. How much must he have mouthed the words of the Psalms and given them a fulfillment? They became his answering speech to his heavenly Father. In these pages you will discover how the psalms that relate closely to the mission of Jesus can also become our answering speech. We will begin our journey into the mind of Christ by immersing ourselves in several psalms which Jesus himself refers to and fulfills. And then in the second half of the book, we will immerse ourselves in psalms that Jesus would have meditated on during his time on earth, focusing on the heart and mind of Jesus as he prayed the psalms. Structural analysis of each psalm will help us grow our ability to read the Psalms. The guided personal prayer liturgy with each chapter will help us go deeper in the experience of praying the Psalms. Through these psalms we will discover more of the human life of our Lord and Savior. And in the process we will discover more of who we are as we come before our holy God. Also included: a group discussion and prayer experience to accompany each chapter.

Praying the Psalms

The Psalms are about passion, and you should feel passionately when you read them. The Psalmist poured out his soul to God concerning the things that deeply moved him. As you read the Psalms, you are taking a peak into his heart. As you do you will cry when he weeps, shout when he rejoices, burn when he gets angry and fall on your face when he worships God. Praying the Psalms is a wonderful way to meet God every day in your private devotions. You cannot get closer to God than when you pray the Scriptures, since the book of Psalms reflects the heart of God. Therefore, you will get close to His heart when you pray the Psalms. —DR. BILL BRIGHT Praying the Psalms carefully shapes the Psalms into personal prayers enabling you to identify with the Psalmist as he prayed. Dr. Towns delicately presents the Psalms as a living language that will move you from your feet to your knees.

Personal Confessions from the Psalms

RENEW YOUR HEART TO THE RHYTHMS OF GOD! The psalms of the Bible are powerful expressions of the heart of faith in covenant with God, and of the heart of God in covenant with His people. Confessing the psalms is simply speaking in agreement with them, and is a great way to meditate on, personalize and instruct your soul with the truths and promises they bring. The personal confessions in this book are adapted from the psalms. They are defibrillations to shift your heart into the rhythms of faith, to recalibrate your thoughts and emotions with the promises of God and realign your will with the heart of God. But don't just read them. Find a place where you can say them out loud and maybe even shout them out with passion. Let them go up with a whoop and a holler to God, with the velocity of faith, and watch what happens in your heart and in your life. Samples O the Happiness! ~ from Psalm 1 O the happiness! I do not walk in the counsel of those who are ungodly; I do not seek out or follow their advice. I do not stand in the path with those who purpose to do what is wrong. I do not sit with those who mock what is good. But my delight is in the instruction of Yahweh, I think about it all the time. So I am like a tree planted by rivers of water, Established, well-rooted, well-fed, That bears its fruit abundantly in its season; And its leaf does not wither. Whatever I do prospers. The judgment of Yahweh is for me, not against me. I stand with the people who stand in awe of Him, And Yahweh watches over my path. O the happiness! My King ~ from Psalm 5 Yahweh is my King and my God. To Him I will pray. In the morning, He hears my voice. In the morning, I lay my requests before Him I wait and I watch And I look to Him in expectation. By His great mercy, I come before Him. I bow down and worship Him, As His holy temple, in whom He dwells.* He leads me in all that is right And He straightens out my path before me. My heart is light because I trust in Him. I shout wildly because He defends me. I jump for joy because I love His name. For Yahweh blesses those who are right with Him, He surrounds them with His favor. He surrounds me with His favor, All around me, as with a shield. Recovering One of the Lost Tools of Christian Spirituality

This study focuses on why and how the 21st century church in America must recover one of its lost tools for cultivating spiritual health and vibrancy: Praying the Psalms. Four specific challenges in contemporary church life are tackled: ministerial leadership, liturgical, devotional, and hermeneutical. This project highlights six hermeneutical presuppositions one must embrace if one is to read and pray the Psalms Christo-centrically. The journey in praying the Psalms is littered with hermeneutical landmines: Allegorical interpretation, moralistic interpretation, and Christo-monistic interpretation. These landmines are discussed so that the whole enterprise is not threatened and compromised. The biblical foundations for Christians praying the Psalms are two-fold: Jesus Christ himself regularly prayed the Psalms as well as the early church. Three recorded prayers of Jesus (Psalm 22, 31, and 40) are studied expositionally. Acts 4:23-31, the locus classicus of early church psalm prayer, receives thorough treatment. The historical tradition for praying the Psalms is manifold, but this study focuses on two prominent figures: St. Augustine and Martin Luther. This project examines their hermeneutical pilgrimages and their unique contributions to reading, interpreting, and praying the Psalms. Their rationale and recommendations for praying the Psalter are set forth. The contemporary landscape on praying the Psalms centers on hearing from three contemporary voices on the subject: Eugene Peterson, Walter Brueggemann, and Hughes Oliphant Old. This study discusses four cultural landmines that hinder our efforts in praying the Psalms as well as what these contemporary voices declare are the best practices for praying the Psalms. Lastly, a practical booklet attempts to offer believers a guide for how to pray the Psalms. The outline for this booklet centers on three simple questions: What is praying the Psalms? Why pray the Psalms? How do you pray the Psalms? Five methods for praying the Psalms devotionally are proposed.

Here you will find God as your shelter of strength. "As I'm hidden within your greatness, I discover your eternal purposes. In love and humility I bow before you, my awe-inspiring God. The way you watch over me, infuses me with confidence and courage. You are my source; I draw life from the waters of your love. Walking step by step with you brings me joy unlike I've ever known. Your Word illuminates my path, and wherever I go, I flourish. No matter the season, I'm blessed--established firmly in you." (Inspired by Psalm 1:2)
