Roughing It, Part 3. by Mark Twain We were approaching the end of our long journey. It was the morning of the twentieth day. At noon we would reach Carson City, the capital of Nevada Territory. We were not glad, but sorry. It had been a fine pleasure trip; we had fed fat on wonders every day; we were now well accustomed to stage life, and very fond of it; so the idea of coming to a stand-still and settling down to a humdrum existence in a village was not agreeable, but on the contrary depressing. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Korinek shows that rather than promoting domestic perfection, Chatelaine did not cling to the stereotypes of the era, but instead forged ahead, providing women with a variety of images, ideas, and critiques of women?s role in society.

Mark Twain's 'imaginative interpretation' of his experience as a prospector, miner, journalist in the West in Nevada, California, and the Sandwich Islands, and finally as a lecturer in 1866. It was in the West that Twain found and eventually accepted his vocation as a humorist and teller of tall tales.

First published in 1852, and in its third edition by 1854, this description of pioneer immigrant life in Canada by Susanna Moodie (1803-85) is unsentimental and frank. In contrast to similar works, which often seem to be advertisements aimed at potential immigrants, Moodie's book emphasises not only the triumphs but also the tribulations as she and her family begin their new lives. Initially criticised in Canada for painting an unflattering picture of the country, it was later recognised as a key work of early Canadian literature, and has influenced writers up to the present day. In Volume 2 the family continue their efforts as farmers, moving to a second property in the hope of better prospects. However, neither husband (a former soldier) nor wife were well equipped for their lives as pioneer immigrants, and they finally leave for the town of Bellville when Dunbar Moodie obtains a government post.
