Samuel Beckett s Self referential Drama

This book covers Beckett's complete dramatic works, which are examined through various expressive means: space, light, stage properties and costumes; acting, silences, vocal non-verbal expressions such as cries and whispers; and the notion of "being seen". A recurrent theme is how Beckett's self-referential and meta-theatrical plays refer back to the playwright's artistic self-consciousness and extend an invitation for an authentic dialogue with real people in the audience. This fully revised second edition includes five new chapters. "Spirit Made Light" demonstrates that Beckett's preoccupation with spiritual matters is uniquely exemplified through his film and TV scripts. A chapter on contemporary chaos theory highlights the many instances of his delicate balance between "order" and "disorder". "Godot as an Israeli Culture Hero" discusses Beckett's reception in Israel. "I on the Threshold of Offstage" explores the notion of a theatrically active void; and "On and Offstage: Spiritual Performatives in Beckett's Drama" deals with Beckett's works as they reveal a unique brinkmanship between accepting and rejecting religion and the Divine, his lucidly intellectual approach, his merciless scepticism, and his frequent ridiculing attitude towards sentimental and simplistic notions of "the spiritual" juxtaposed with his intensive quest for a "beyond".

Samuel Beckett s Abstract Drama

Samuel Beckett's Play, written 1962-63, was an aesthetic watershed inaugurating his late, 'abstract' dramatic style. This book gets close to Beckett's creative process by examining the possible influence of Arnold Schoenberg's twelve-tone music and Vassily Kandinsky's abstract painting upon this formal shift; by tracing Beckett's developing attitude to abstraction and its relation to his long-standing preoccupation with the 'breakdown' of the subject-object relation and the ultimate failure of all expression; and by following his formal choices through manuscript drafts. The author goes on to analyse Beckett's attempt to adapt his new methods to the media of film and television, and to demonstrate how Beckett's late works for stage and screen develop alongside one another right up to his 1985 adaptation of the play What Where for television. Throughout the book, unpublished manuscript materials such as Beckett's letters, drafts, notes on philosophy, psychology and art, and his 'German diaries' augment a detailed account of the submerged sources that Beckett appropriated to the evolving needs of his abstract dramatic art.

Modern Drama Scholarship and Criticism 1981 1990

The successor to modern drama scholarship and criticism 1966-1980, the present volume is a classified, selective list of publications for the period 1981-1990, with many additions and corrections to the previous volume. It refines and supplements the series of annual bibliographies that Charles Carpenter compiled for the journal Modern Drama from 1982 to 1993. The work is designed both as a convenient checklist of significant scholarship on all aspects of world drama since Ibsen and as a bibliographical prTcis of the discipline as it has evolved since 1980. The great majority of its 25,200 entries concern literary currents in drama since the last third of the nineteenth century and the associated playwrights, although theatre history is also well represented. Because of the heightened interest in semiotic, anthropological, feminist, and other theoretical approaches to drama during the decade of the 1980s, the 'Contemporary Theory' section has been greatly expanded. The primary organization is geographic/linguistic; the main divisions are World Drama, then American, British and Irish, Canadian, Hispanic, French, Italian, Germanic, Scandinavian, Eastern European, African and West Indian, Australasian, and Asian drama. A name index is included. Although the bibliography is limited to material in Roman-alphabet languages, its scope, orientation, and format are designed to make the project internationally useful and intelligible.
