Real-life adventures that illustrate and explain the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
Author: Robert Crolene
Ron Adams, growing up in Tucson, going to school, off to college, tragedy, deaths, incarceration, prison gangs, mandatory release, High Sierra, marriage and family, mountains and earthquakes: What is a yogi supposed to do? Simple. Follow the Yoga Sutras and remember Patanjali's words: "These Great Vows are universal, not limited by class, place, time, or circumstance." Welcome to the Secret Yoga Club. This series of books (Secret Yoga Club 2 is the second among them) explores the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, a collection of 196 concise thoughts based on thousands of years of study. The sutras are mostly psychological, a map of consciousness, the landscape from here to samadhi. Many learned commentators see them as eloquent and methodical, and some consider Patanjali the Einstein of sages. His sutras show a fractal structure, growing upon itself from a seed to the universe. But what would a child think? Suppose the first sutra, "Now the practice of yoga," is given to Ron as a 2-year-old. And suppose this practice is carried forth through adulthood, one or more sutras at a time? How would it influence life regarding love, family, friends, struggle, and success? Doctors Melvin and Evangeline Adams brought the sutras to the education of their only child, starting at the time he learned to talk. The journey is documented here, all in first person as it occurred.

Chatting it up with bendy WASPs is the last thing on Coco Guthrie’s mind during her 8:30 a.m. yoga class. Having made her fortune as the world-renowned inventor of Butt-B-Gone derriere cream, Coco still doesn’t feel like she belongs among the upper class— until she attends the swankiest Halloween soiree in Greenwich, Connecticut, where three of her fellow morning yogis shared her brilliant idea to appear as Sarah Palin. Soon it’s clear that a love of stretching isn’t all this accidental sorority—which includes a single mom with echolalia, an entertainment reporter who charms the pants off handsome stars, and a drama-prone producer with a taste for drag— have in common. When the four mischievous Sarahs wander away from the party to sneak a peek at the mayor’s neighboring estate, they are stunned to find him adorned in leather and latex, and rolling up a woman’s body in a Persian rug. To make matters worse, someone has spotted the spying Palins. Someone who threatens to expose their torrid affairs in business and the bedroom. Now the unlikely foursome must use all their wits and wiles to get to the bottom of the kinky crime. But will their budding friendship be strong enough to protect their deepest secrets?

Premodern and early modern yoga comprise techniques with a wide range of aims, from turning inward in quest of the true self, to turning outward for divine union, to channeling bodily energy in pursuit of sexual pleasure. Early modern yoga also encompassed countercultural beliefs and practices. In contrast, today, modern yoga aims at the enhancement of the mind-body complex but does so according to contemporary dominant metaphysical, health, and fitness paradigms. Consequently, yoga is now a part of popular culture. In Selling Yoga, Andrea R. Jain explores the popularization of yoga in the context of late-twentieth-century consumer culture. She departs from conventional approaches by undermining essentialist definitions of yoga as well as assumptions that yoga underwent a linear trajectory of increasing popularization. While some studies trivialize popularized yoga systems by reducing them to the mere commodification or corruption of what is perceived as an otherwise fixed, authentic system, Jain suggests that this dichotomy oversimplifies the history of yoga as well as its meanings for contemporary practitioners. By discussing a wide array of modern yoga types, from Iyengar Yoga to Bikram Yoga, Jain argues that popularized yoga cannot be dismissed--that it has a variety of religious meanings and functions. Yoga brands destabilize the basic utility of yoga commodities and assign to them new meanings that represent the fulfillment of self-developmental needs often deemed sacred in contemporary consumer culture.

Barcelona barely has time to take down the bunting between its rollicking festivals — when there isn't an all night fiesta happening on the street, there's more likely a party on the beach (only 10 minutes away) and never any shortage of action in its clubs and bars. Gentler pursuits are also myriad: the city's museums have got it all covered from Picasso and Miro to perfume and an outstanding aquarium. Its galleries are among the most avant-garde in Europe, and its history writ large in the churches and perfectly preserved medieval alleyways of the Barri Gotic. Time Out's local journalists give travelers the inside scoop on where to stay, eat, shop and what to see. Suggested day-trips to coast, country, and city are also included.

The life and adventures of an American explorer and iconic figure in the 20th century religious counterculture movement. In 1937, Theos Casimir Bernard, the self-proclaimed “White Lama,” became the third American in history to reach Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet. During his stay, he amassed the largest collection of Tibetan texts, art, and artifacts in the Western hemisphere at that time. He also documented, in both still photography and 16mm film, the age-old civilization of Tibet on the eve of its destruction by Chinese Communists. Based on thousands of primary sources and rare archival materials, this is the real story behind the purported adventures of Bernard and his role in the growth of America's religious counterculture. Over the course of his brief life, Bernard met, associated, and corresponded with the major social, political, and cultural leaders of his day, from the Regent and high politicians of Tibet to saints, scholars, and diplomats of British India, from Charles Lindbergh and Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Gandhi and Nehru. Although hailed as a brilliant pioneer by the media, Bernard also had his flaws. He was an entrepreneur propelled by grandiose schemes, a handsome man who shamelessly used his looks to bounce from rich wife to rich wife in support of his activities, and a master manipulator who concocted his own interpretation of Eastern wisdom to suit his ends. Bernard had a bright future before him but disappeared in India during the communal violence of the 1947 Partition, never to be seen again. “Well-written…A readable intellectual account of the life of an ambitious Tibetological pioneer.”—Asian Ethnology
The work of the Body of Light -- with the technique of Yoga -- is the foundation of the whole.
Author: Nancy Wasserman

Yoga today connotes many images and ideas -- from holy men on a high mountaintop to throngs of young women toting designer mats. Yoga, meaning 'union,' is actually a many-layered discipline designed to help an individual attain health, serenity, focus, and ultimately, union with the Divine. Aleister Crowley was one of the first Europeans to practice yoga and believed the practice was essential to spiritual growth, stating that 'Magick is a Pyramid built layer by layer. The work of the Body of Light -- with the technique of Yoga -- is the foundation of the whole.' This succinct and uniquely helpful book explores the frequently overlooked importance of bringing a healthy body and a clear-thinking mind to the practice of ceremonial magick or Wicca. While many books on magick discuss the importance of ritual, almost none point to the physical, spiritual, and moral quality necessary to make those rituals effective. Spiritual power demands physical health and the contemporary western practitioner can learn much from the ancient tradition of yoga.
