Pamela Colman Smith

Pamela Colman Smith’s illustrations for the Rider Waite tarot deck are known to millions worldwide, but her work took her from art galleries in New York and Europe to salons with luminaries of the English suffrage movement, the Irish literary revival, and friendships with Bram Stoker, W. B. Yeats, and G. K. Chesterton. A feminist artist, poet, folklorist, editor, publisher, and stage designer who was active from 1896 through the 1920s, Colman Smith became popular for her live performances of Jamaican folktales in both England and the U.S., using the creole of the island to capture the dramatic power of these tales while driving speculation about her purposefully indeterminate racial and sexual identity. She also travelled in - and was expelled from – occult circles, and her ability to take on and cast aside a wide range of identities was central to her life’s work. Colman Smith illustrated more than 20 books and well over a hundred magazine articles, wrote two collections of Jamaican folktales, and edited two magazines. Her paintings were exhibited in galleries in the U.S. and Europe.

Pamela Colman Smith Tarot Artist

Pamela Colman Smith is the mysterious artist behind the most renowned tarot deck in the world, for many years forgotten. In a revival of interest in esoteric artists and accessible tarot, curiosity about Pamela is now on the ascendant, but there are still many unanswered questions, especially concerning her later life. Born in London to American parents, Pamela was a prolific illustrator and artist who mixed with the great and good of art and theatre, among them W. B. Yeats and Bram Stoker. 'Adopted' by actress Ellen Terry, she spent some years with the Lyceum Theatre crowd, also working as an exotic storyteller, known as Gelukiezanger, in bohemian London. People have questioned her sexuality, her ethnic origins and alleged synaesthesia, assuming her to be biracial and lesbian. These are discussed but the biggest mystery of all is why she converted from mysticism to Catholicism in 1911, removing herself from vibrant London to the isolated Lizard in the west of Cornwall. There, living in relative obscurity, she evangelised Catholicism in a heavily non-conformist area, before moving to Bude in her sixties.

Most tarot books explain the meaning of the cards and how to read spreads. In Tarot: A Life Guided by the Cards, I go one step further – using events from my life to illustrate the rich symbolism of each card and helping the reader see how they relate to their own life and circumstances. I have an extended section on the court cards, which are the characters of Tarot. Understanding these cards is a fascinating way to better know yourself, other people, and to add real colour to your readings. I also cover some big tarot questions: What is fate? Can the future be predicted? How to read for yourself in difficult times. How to adjust a Tarot spread to ensure accuracy and reflect any situation. Safeguarding - what you need to consider when reading Tarot for others. How to guide your life with the tarot. Think of my book as a long chat with a Tarot expert, shared over a cup of coffee. As I share memories, answer your questions, and offer you practical guidance to support your Tarot journey.

The Occult Imagination in Britain 1875 1947

Between 1875 and 1947, a period bookended, respectively, by the founding of the Theosophical Society and the death of notorious occultist celebrity Aleister Crowley, Britain experienced an unparalleled efflorescence of engagement with unusual occult schema and supernatural phenomena such as astral travel, ritual magic, and reincarnationism. Reflecting the signal array of responses by authors, artists, actors, impresarios and popular entertainers to questions of esoteric spirituality and belief, this interdisciplinary collection demonstrates the enormous interest in the occult during a time typically associated with the rise of secularization and scientific innovation. The contributors describe how the occult realm functions as a turbulent conceptual and affective space, shifting between poles of faith and doubt, the sacrosanct and the profane, the endemic and the exotic, the forensic and the fetishistic. Here, occultism emerges as a practice and epistemology that decisively shapes the literary enterprises of writers such as Dion Fortune and Arthur Machen, artists such as Pamela Colman Smith, and revivalists such as Rolf Gardiner

Greg Rigby's The God Secret uncovers a startling truth about the greatest mystery of all times-the origins of the Judeo/Christian God and its teachings. Rigby's intensive research of ancient Egypt, Astronomy, The Book of Revelation and the history of religion in Europe illustrates tangible evidence of how myths beginning as early as 6750 determined what most of us believe. In ancient times wise men studied the starts and joined them into patterns that depicted pictures of gods and goddesses. Their theories formed the basis for the subsequent belief of formalized religions. Rigby's 185 illustrations give the reader an easy to follow guide that gives question to present day beliefs and to the common thread that most religions represent-eternal damnation for anyone consorting with the Horned One or devil. Rigby cites examples from the Grail myths and illustrates how the chalice and the sword link them to the Christ story. He presents overwhelming evidence that connects the seven stars of the big dipper constellation to the Grail Cup and shows how initial interpretations of this heavenly constellation led to an enduring theme among organized religions. Explore the connection between The Egyptian Mysteries, The Grail Myths, The Tarot, The Book of Revelation, and the Adam and Eve story.
