Prisms

The career of E. A. Seguy spanned both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, and he was one of the few graphic artists to incorporate both styles into his work. Original portfolios of his magnificent designs — intended as inspiration for textiles, wallpaper, and other decorative items — are highly collectible today. These 40 full-color plates, most of them geometric patterns, are derived from one of Seguy's final portfolios. They attest to the French artist's inventive gifts and the enduring appeal of his vivid patterns. Originally published in Paris in 1931, the images in this edition were rendered in striking color via the pochoir technique. The demanding, labor-intensive method employed hand stenciling to apply pigment to paper. A single print could require as many as a hundred stencils in order to achieve a depth and texture similar to watercolor or gouache paintings. The expense of the technique soon proved impractical and was abandoned, making Seguy's Prisms a particularly desirable rarity for art historians and collectors of Art Deco and Art Nouveau graphics.

S guy s Decorative Butterflies Insects in Full Color

E. A. Seguy was one of the foremost French designers of decorative art during the first third of the twentieth century. He produced numerous color portfolios of visual ideas for artists, illustrators and designers over a long and distinguished career. This book reproduces in full color all 40 of the extraordinary plates from Papillons (Butterflies) and Insectes, two portfolios Seguy published in the 1920s. Included here are 81 specimens of butterflies plus 16 artistic designs based on butterfly motifs, and 80 insects other than butterflies with 16 decorative compositions utilizing insects. These extremely striking creatures with their provocative color combinations come from all parts of the world-India, China, Australia, New Guinea, Malaysia, Java, Borneo, Thailand, Sikkim, Malacca, Madagascar, Mozambique, the Cameroons, the Congo, Senegal, Algeria, the East Indies, Europe, Armenia, Mexico, Péru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil. Among the fascinating insects depicted here are various kinds of cicada, grasshoppers, beetles, bees, hornets, flies (including dragonflies), weevils, gnats, bugs. Seguy drew these butterflies and insects, gathered from scientific publications over a period of years, with scrupulous accuracy of form and color. The intensity and freshness of the color of the living creatures were retained by the use of the pochoir method: hand-coloring through a large number of different stencils of each plate. The artist provided the scientific name and habitat for each species, reprinted here without alteration in a separate section. Seguy's aim was to make available to decorative artists dozens of examples of extremely colorful exotic creatures that had been unjustly neglected because of their rarity in life and in illustrations. These beautiful and unusual forms of nature, and Seguy's designs based upon them, are an unparalleled source of new ideas for textiles, wallpapers, packaging, mosaics, stained glass, rugs, and many other areas of graphics and crafts work.

Full color Floral Designs in the Art Nouveau Style

E. A. Seguy was one of the foremost French designers of the first third of the twentieth century. He produced many splendid albums of designs over a long and distinguished career. This book reproduces in full color 40 plates from the two color portfolios called Les fleurs et leurs applications décoratives [c. 1902] - one of the high points in Art Nouveau design. The 40 plates included here contain 166 decorative Art Nouveau patterns. Lacy and delicate interpretations of flowers ranging from arum and arrowhead to water lily and wisteria, these patterns offer such color combinations as a blue-petaled flower with green leaves on a mustard background, salmon-colored flower with robin's-egg-blue leaves on a beige field, and royal-blue flowers with golden leaves on golden stems silhouetted in light blue-green on a deep blue-green field. The colors in this volume are strong and bold, prefiguring such later influences as Persian art and the Ballets Russes. Twenty of the plates in the original portfolios contained ordinary realistic renderings of 30 plants, and they have been omitted from this volume. The wide variety of flat designs are perfect for textiles, wallpapers, and packaging, and offer many ideas for mosaics, stained glass, rugs and bookbindings. Containing borders, circular designs, repeats, allovers, and "spots," this collection has something to interest everyone in the graphics field.

French Decorative Designs

The French have long been leaders in the creation of textiles and wall coverings, especially during the art deco period of the 1920s. Influenced by art nouveau and modernist styles, designers made bold statements with vivid colors and dazzling patterns. The images represented in this coloring book were created by a variety of accomplished artists. E. A. Séguy was one of the leading French pattern designers. He created stylized insect, bird, and flower patterns using striking color combinations, some of which were manufactured as textiles or wallpaper.Séguy and others published design folios using the pochoir technique, a printing process that uses stencils to create clean lines and a wet appearance. Pochoir is labor intensive, and at its peak as many as thirty graphic design studios in France each employed as many as 600 workers. Less-expensive printing techniques, such as color lithography, came to replace pochoir.
