Teaching Social and Emotional Learning in Physical Education

Teaching Social and Emotional Learning in Physical Education is the ideal resource for understanding and integrating social and emotional learning (SEL) competencies into the structure of a physical education program, alongside physical activity and skill development goals. This text should be incorporated as a key resource to guide physical education teacher education courses specifically focused on social and emotional learning while also providing supplemental readings for courses related to physical education curriculum, instruction, assessment, and/or models-based practice. Similarly, practicing physical education teachers who are interested in developing a stronger focus on SEL in their teaching will find that the book provides a comprehensive resource to guide their professional learning and practice.

Sel in Action

This guide gives educators a five-step framework to implement social-emotional learning (SEL) with their students to help them achieve success in school and life. Not all educators teach in districts where training in SEL and related topics such as restorative justice, trauma-informed teaching and culturally responsive teaching is readily available. In this six-page guide, author and educator Jorge Valenzuela introduces educators to the Equity and SEL Integration Framework that will help them understand core SEL competencies and design lessons that activate SEL in their curriculum. The guide features: Online videos that explain each element of the Equity and SEL Integration Framework. Clear explanation of SEL and the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning's (CASEL) five core competencies. Resources for understanding and addressing implicit bias. Links to templates for empathy maps and emotions planners. Information on edtech tools that can be used to integrate SEL. Additional resources for understanding SEL and developing an SEL integration plan. (ISTE Jump Start Guide, 8.5" x 11", three laminated panels, six pages)

Dissipative Quantum Mechanics of Nanostructures

Continuing miniaturization of electronic devices, together with the quickly growing number of nanotechnological applications, demands a profound understanding of the underlying physics. Most of the fundamental problems of modern condensed matter physics involve various aspects of quantum transport and fluctuation phenomena at the nanoscale. In nanostructures, electrons are usually confined to a limited volume and interact with each other and lattice ions, simultaneously suffering multiple scattering events on impurities, barriers, surface imperfections, and other defects. Electron interaction with other degrees of freedom generally yields two major consequences, quantum dissipation and quantum decoherence. In other words, electrons can lose their energy and ability for quantum interference even at very low temperatures. These two different, but related, processes are at the heart of all quantum phenomena discussed in this book. This book presents copious details to facilitate the understanding of the basic physics behind a result and the learning to technically reproduce the result without delving into extra literature. The book subtly balances the description of theoretical methods and techniques and the display of the rich landscape of the physical phenomena that can be accessed by these methods. It is useful for a broad readership ranging from master’s and PhD students to postdocs and senior researchers.

Programming in Objective C

Programming in Objective-C is a concise, carefully written tutorial on the basics of Objective-C and object-oriented programming for the iOS and Mac platforms. The book makes no assumptions about prior experience with object-oriented programming languages or with the C language (which Objective-C is based upon). Because of this, both beginners and experienced programmers alike can use this book to quickly and effectively learn the fundamentals of Objective-C. Readers can also learn the concepts of object-oriented programming without having to first learn all of the intricacies of the underlying procedural language (C). This unique approach to learning, combined with many small program examples and exercises at the end of each chapter, makes Programming in Objective-C ideally suited for either classroom use or self-study. While the Objective-C language itself has gone through relatively minor changes since the introduction of Objective-C 2.0, the Apple development tools that programmers use for Objective-C development on the Mac and on iOS have changed significantly in a very short period of time. The third edition of Programming in Objective-C includes numerous updates and improvements throughout the book: Improved organization for some chapters Incorporation of feedback and suggestions from members of the author's forum for readers, including more detailed descriptions for some of the examples A new introduction to blocks with examples Replacement of deprecated methods with newer methods Updated diagrams and steps for using Xcode 4
