This open access book provides innovative methods and original applications of sequence analysis (SA) and related methods for analysing longitudinal data describing life trajectories such as professional careers, family paths, the succession of health statuses, or the time use. The applications as well as the methodological contributions proposed in this book pay special attention to the combined use of SA and other methods for longitudinal data such as event history analysis, Markov modelling, and sequence network. The methodological contributions in this book include among others original propositions for measuring the precarity of work trajectories, Markov-based methods for clustering sequences, fuzzy and monothetic clustering of sequences, network-based SA, joint use of SA and hidden Markov models, and of SA and survival models. The applications cover the comparison of gendered occupational trajectories in Germany, the study of the changes in women market participation in Denmark, the study of typical day of dual-earner couples in Italy, of mobility patterns in Togo, of internet addiction in Switzerland, and of the quality of employment career after a first unemployment spell. Sequence analysis (SA) is the systematic descriptive and causal study of sequences, that is, successions of standard categorical states or events. SA is a unique method for representing, comparing, and clustering sequences; for extracting prototypical sequences; and for mining sequence populations. Its core tool, the optimal matching algorithm, screens and discriminates longitudinal processes according to the nature of events, their duration, and their order. Numerous fields in the social and political sciences deal with sequences including life-course analysis, the sociology of professional careers, political sociology, the study of political regimes, and various geographical or ethnographic practices.The entry firstly defines sequences, provides examples of them, and presents SA's underlying sociological concepts and objectives. It shows how SA differs from other social scientific methods, especially longitudinal, statistical methods. A brief historical account of the method's development highlights the original intuition, its standardisation, and the dialectic between unity and diversity of the field. The second section relies on a range of concrete applications to present the main usual steps in SA studies: conceptualisation, data collection and preparation, exploration, calculation of dissimilarities, and postdissimilarity treatments. The third section shows the limitations of the standard approaches, and the available variations and variants, including alternative calculations of dissimilarities, multichannel SA, and prototypical sequences.

Holisms of communication

A central pillar of contemporary communication research is the analysis of filmed interactions between people. The techniques employed in such analysis first took on a recognizably modern form in the 1970s, but their roots go back to the earliest days of motion picture technology in the late nineteenth century. This book presents original essays accompanied by written responses which together create a dialogue exploring early efforts at audio-visual sequence analysis and their common goal to capture the "whole" of the communicative situation. The first three chapters of this volume look at the film-based research of Gestalt psychologists in Berlin as well as psychologists in the orbit of Karl and Charlotte Bühler in Vienna in the first decades of the twentieth century. Most of these figures – along with many other Central European scholars of this era – were driven into exile in the United States after the rise of National Socialism in the 1930s. This scientific migration led to the cross-pollination of communication studies in America, an outcome visible in the leading project in interaction research of the mid-twentieth century, the Natural History of an Interview. The following two chapters examine this project in its historical context. The volume closes with a critical edition of a treasure from the archives: the transcript of a speech delivered by Ray Birdwhistell, a key participant in the Natural History of an Interview project and founder of kinesics.

This volume introduces a series of different data-driven computational methods for analyzing group processes through didactic and tutorial-based examples. Group processes are of central importance to many sectors of society, including government, the military, health care, and corporations. Computational methods are better suited to handle (potentially huge) group process data than traditional methodologies because of their more flexible assumptions and capability to handle real-time trace data. Indeed, the use of methods under the name of computational social science have exploded over the years. However, attention has been focused on original research rather than pedagogy, leaving those interested in obtaining computational skills lacking a much needed resource. Although the methods here can be applied to wider areas of social science, they are specifically tailored to group process research. A number of data-driven methods adapted to group process research are demonstrated in this current volume.
