Numerical Methods of Exploration Seismology

Exploration seismology uses seismic imaging to form detailed images of the Earth's interior, enabling the location of likely petroleum targets. Due to the size of seismic datasets, sophisticated numerical algorithms are required. Seismic Inversion Methods  A Practical Approach

This book introduces readers to seismic inversion methods and their application to both synthetic and real seismic data sets. Seismic inversion methods are routinely used to estimate attributes like P-impedance, S-impedance, density, the ratio of P-wave and S-wave velocities and elastic impedances from seismic and well log data. These attributes help to understand lithology and fluid contents in the subsurface. There are several seismic inversion methods available, but their application and results differ considerably, which can lead to confusion. Reprocessing and Comparison of the 2 Hz and 10 Hz Vertical Component Seismic Data of the Blackfoot 3C 2D Survey

"The Blackfoot seismic 3C-2D data were obtained from the Consortium for Research in Elastic Wave Exploration Seismology (CREWES) Project in 1995. The seismic data acquisition was performed in the Blackfoot Field, which is around 15 km southeast of Strathmore, Alberta. The 4 Hz and 10 Hz vertical component data are reprocessed to increase the quality and resolution of the seismic images. The Glauconitic sand reservoir at approximately 1.1 s, and a strong reflection about at 1.5 s are the focuses of the study. The processing procedure includes different parameters and methods to obtain the best seismic sections of 2 Hz and 10 Hz data. In each processing stage, the results are analyzed and compared. Both 2 Hz and 10 Hz data show strong reflections, and also strongly contaminated by ground-roll noise. Thus, the main objective of the study is to enhance the vertical resolution and achieve a high-quality migrated section by attenuating noise and increasing the signal-to-noise ratio. In the noise attenuation step, the noises are suppressed considerably, and the signal-to-noise ratio is increased significantly. Three different types of deconvolution, which include predictive, surface consistent, and spiking, are tested and analyzed to obtain the best results. Static corrections are applied to remove weathering effect and elevation irregularities. Since the subsurface structure is not complex, the results of the 2D Kirchhoff post-stack time migration are adequate. The seismic sections before and after each processing stage are analyzed, and significant improvements are observed on migrated seismic sections. The comparison of 2 Hz and 10 Hz data results almost identical images after processing. Furthermore, migrated seismic sections of reprocessed data represent the Glauconitic sand reservoir (incised valley) and the subsurface of the area better compared to the migrated legacy seismic data obtained by CREWES"--Abstract, page iii.
