Love Dad

The author's father, C. F. Dexheimer, was a first-rate storyteller, who delighted in sharing his many adventures through letters to family and friends. Whether describing a Wild West Texas storm, or a tense encounter with suspicious locals in a Mississippi town in the 1960s , or a 100 mph car chase through the Rocky Mountains""or a birthday party for a cat""he had a knack for capturing the essence of the moment. He was an industry pioneer in the field of liquefied natural gas. He was a fire chief. He was a church treasurer and a gun-toting deputy sheriff. In this book, his daughter draws on hundreds of his letters to paint a picture of a man who lived every moment to the fullest and passed on his love of life as his legacy.

The Penal Voluntary Sector

Winner of the 2017 British Society of Criminology Book Prize The penal voluntary sector and the relationships between punishment and charity are more topical than ever before. In recent years in England and Wales, the sector has featured significantly in both policy rhetoric and academic commentary. Penal voluntary organisations are increasingly delivering prison and probation services under contract, and this role is set to expand. However, the diverse voluntary organisations which comprise the sector, their varied relationships with statutory agencies and the effects of such work remain very poorly understood. This book provides a wide-ranging and rigorous examination of this policy-relevant but complex and little studied area. It explores what voluntary organisations are doing with prisoners and probationers, how they manage to undertake their work, and the effects of charitable work with prisoners and probationers. The author uses original empirical research and an innovative application of actor-network theory to enable a step change in our understanding of this increasingly significant sector, and develops the policy-centric accounts produced in the last decade to illustrate how voluntary organisations can mediate the experiences of imprisonment and probation at the micro and macro levels. Demonstrating how the legacy of philanthropic work and neoliberal policy reforms over the past thirty years have created a complex three-tier penal voluntary sector of diverse organisations, this cutting-edge interdisciplinary text will be of interest to criminologists, sociologists of work and industry, and those engaged in the voluntary sector.

Dad s Princess

There is nothing more tragically in a child’s life, beyond lack of love, than the confusion of languages. To confuse the sex language with the unconditional love one - the love of father and mother - is fatal, when there is no one else around who could replace it. In this novel, the family history is repeated over generations, in a succession of physical and psychological abuse. Where does child abuse end and start? What if the abuser was also abused? What if...? What if...? Ask your questions and try to draw conclusions on a taboo subject. Get to know this family history, based on real facts.

Memoir of a Cashier Korean Americans Racism and Riots

Author Carol Park grew up in Los Angeles during the 1980s and 1990s, a time of ethnic strife. Now she seeks to give voice to the Korean American community both then and now. Memoir of a Cashier is more than just a description of young girl's life growing up while working in a bulletproof cashier's booth in Compton, California. Park tells the story of the Korean American experience leading up to and after the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. Intricately weaving the story of her mother into the text, she provides a bird's-eye view into the Korean American narrative from her own unique perspective. With candor and direct language, she recounts the racism and traumatic incidents she lived through. Park bore witness to shootings, robberies, and violence, all of which twisted her worldview and ultimately shaped her life. In this memoir, a Korean American woman recalls her experiences of Los Angeles during the 1992 riots and shares her journey of finding her identity.

Pops in Pop Culture

The definitions of fatherhood have shifted in the twenty-first century as paternal subjectivities, conflicts, and desires have registered in new ways in the contemporary family. This collection investigates these sites of change through various lenses from popular culture - film, television, blogs, best-selling fiction and non-fiction, stand-up comedy routines, advertisements, newspaper articles, parenting guide-books, and video games. Treating constructions of the father at the nexus of patriarchy, gender, and (post)feminist philosophy, contributors analyze how fatherhood is defined in relation to masculinity and femininity, and the shifting structures of the heteronormative nuclear family. Perceptions of the father as the traditional breadwinner and authoritarian as compared to a more engaged and involved nurturer are considered via representations of fathers from the US, Canada, Britain, Australia, South Africa, and Sweden.

Dad s Best Memories and Recollections

DAD’S BEST MEMORIES AND RECOLLECTIONS is Chazzz Humber’s epithaph casting a very long and sentimental shadow across North America and beyond. This 230-page volume is his granite monument, well-polished! It lavishly records 125 of his best memories over a life-span of nearly eighty years. The vignettes are serenaded with more than 400 illustrations. Those discovering this volume likely will find themselves wanting to record, in their own sunset years, their personal memories and recollections. And when they do, they are apt to recall what it was like to live in their fluctuating world dominated by a variety of personalities and cascading events. Mr. Humber vividly describes what it was like, in 1945, to travel in a 1930 Model A Ford from Toronto to Boston. With lively enthusiasm, he reports what it was like to live in post-World War II Boston, to cook a lobster for a former President of the United States or to sell a pair of elevator shoes to one of Hollywood’s shortest celebrities or to shine the shoes of a Derby-hatted father of a future President of the United States. It is not a remarkable achievement to reflect, to recall or to have memories that are treasured. But to tell them with literary aplomb, to recall the events that happened nearly seventy-five years ago with utmost clarity is definitely an admirable achievement and should be cherished not only by the kin who follow Mr. Humber but by those who might like to imitate what he has monumentally achieved in Dad’s Best Memories and Recollections.

This Thing Called Love

One of the most influential people in a girl's life is her father. Imagine growing up as a little child with an empty void in your heart longing for the love and acceptance of your father. It is unfortunate but many daughters, young and old alike, can identify with the pain of not having a father present in their lives. The absence of fathers in the lives of their daughters has become an epidemic that has plagued our society and affects many families from all walks of life. Daughters that grow up with a healthy father-and-daughter bond are often less likely to become a teenage mother, experience depression, experiment with drugs and alcohol, develop body image problems and engage in criminal activity. Whereas daughters who do have not father in their lives can experience a plethora of problems. This Thing Called Love is about a young girl who shares her story about her life and the various hardships that she experienced as a result of living with a father who is physically present but emotionally absent. Bewildered by his rude comments and his continuous expressions of his disapproval of her, she makes conscious efforts to shine in his eyes. In the pursuit of trying to achieve her father's love, she learns a great deal about God's love. As her relationship with God matures, her newfound faith ignites her determination to win her father over, not just for her personal gain, but for the benefit of the Kingdom of God.
