This is a first hand account of the author's grandfather, Guy Mainwaring Knocker and his experiences as a pilot in the RFC in the First World War, written as a series of letters and diary entries. He wrote letters virtually every day to his family, while he trained in England and was in service in France, and often illustrated them with little sketches. Guy was gifted artist, particularly pencil and pen and ink, and also an excellent photographer. He flew with No 65 (Fighter) Squadron that was formed in June, 1916 as a fighter squadron, and flew to France in March 1917 in time to play a prominent part in the air operations during the Battles of Arras. Ethnology of Vanuatu

Originally published in German in 1923, this work records much of Vanuatu's early material culture. It is the result of two years of field work by Swiss anthropologist Felix Speiser between 1910 and 1912. Speiser attempted to collect everything that could still be obtained of the objects constituting Vanuatu's native culture. Ethnology of Vanuatu presents culturally and historically significant photographs and drawings by Speiser assembled during the expedition, along with color photos taken in the Basel Museum, which, taken together, represent the Speiser collection. Through the use of Speiser's collection of cultural photographs and illustrations, it has been possible to revive certain art forms thought to have already vanished.

The Diary of a Scullery Maid

She was remarkable in that her black hair was spiked skinhead style and a gold ring disfigured an otherwise faultless nose. Of course! It came to Isabel in a flash—the couple from Yorkshire. At the next table. The cafeteria in Casares.

The Diary of a Scullery Maid

Although the story opens and closes in present-day Spain, the real beginnings are set in the early 1900s when, in Africa, the well-equipped army of the British Empire was being humbled by a few Boer farmers whose only uniform was a slouch hat and a bandolier over everyday work clothes. In England, with the wealth of the aristocracy in decline, Lord and Lady Blanchford-Carter decided to augment their dwindling finances by transforming part of their stately mansion into a high-class brothel for the upper echelons of society. Into this strange household came the young and innocent Helen Sarsfield to commence employment as a scullery maid. In Ireland, Helen's twin brother enlisted in the Connaught Rangers, and would soon depart for Africa, leaving behind his sweetheart in an Ireland rife with talks of insurrection; a place where James Connolly was reminding people that England's difficulty was Ireland's opportunity.
