Tsushima 1905

Japan was closed to the world until 1854 and its technology then was literally medieval. Great Britain, France and Russia divided the globe in the nineteenth century, but Japan was catching up. Its army and navy were retrained by Western powers and equipped with the latest weapons and ships. Japan wanted to further emulate its European mentors and establish a protectorate over Korea, yet Japanese efforts were blocked by Imperial Russia who had their own designs on the peninsula. The Russo-Japanese War started with a surprise Japanese naval attack against an anchored enemy fleet still believing itself at peace. It ended with the Battle of Tsushima, the most decisive surface naval battle of the 20th century. This gripping study describes this pivotal battle, and shows how the Japanese victory over Russia led to the development of the dreadnought battleship, and gave rise to an almost mythical belief in Japanese naval invincibility.

The Russian Navy in War and Revolution from 1914 Up to 1918

For as the Russian Navy passed through a period of complete decay after the revolution, during which many historical documents were undoubtedly lost, the present work will perhaps explain much to the future historian.

The Russian Navy in War and Revolution from 1914 Up to 1918

Originally published in 1923, the author was a Commander in the Imperial Russian Navy, and First-Officer of the Destroyer "Novik."My work has two objects: first to show the activity of our Baltic Fleet during the past war. Of course I shall speak only of the events which concerned the operation of my own ship, the destroyer "Novik." I passed nearly all the war in the "Novik," and it is there that 21 chapters of my book were written; the last four I wrote later...The second object of my book is to state, so far as I know, all that happened in the Navy from the beginning of the February revolution, and to describe the tragedy it lived through during that time up to its complete collapse...All the facts, dates and names stated by me may well serve as historical information. For as the Russian Navy passed through a period of complete decay after the revolution, during which many historical documents were undoubtedly lost, the present work will perhaps explain much to the future historian. The events in which I took no personal part, I have gathered from the documents and recollections kindly supplied to me by men who had been directly connected with them.

Russian Battleships and Cruisers of the Russo Japanese War

This title tells the fascinating story of the development and deployment of the mighty Russian fleets, the pride of the Tsar, which went to war against the Japanese and met with all-encompassing destruction. This book examines the major warships of the Imperial Russian Navy which participated in the Russo-Japanese War. The focus is on the battleships, coastal defense warships, and cruisers of the Pacific Squadron and Baltic Squadron that fought during the war. It discusses in detail their design and development between the years of 1885 and 1905, concentrating particularly on battleships and cruisers. The book explores, in depth, the mutually influential relationship between Russian and foreign warship design, as Russia progressed from a reliance on foreign designs and shipyards towards an ability to produce its own influential ships, such as the Novik. The title also outlines the gripping operational history of the Russian warships which participated in the Russo-Japanese war, tracing their activity before and during the combat, as well as the postwar fate of those ships which were bombarded, scuttled, captured, or salvaged. Packed with contemporary photography and full-color illustrations, this title offers a detailed and definitive guide to the design, development, and destiny of the Russian warships which battled the Japanese in the Eastern seas.

Naval Warfare 1815 1914

This book looks at the transition of wooden sailing fleets to the modern steel navy. It details the technological breakthroughs that brought about this change - steampower, armour, artillery and torpedoes, and looks at their affect on naval strategy and tactics. Part of the ever-growing and prestigious Warfare and History series, this book is a must for enthusiasts of military history.

In Russia , where they study the United Service Institution Journal , this theory of tactics is part of the recognised curriculum ; it is actually better known in a foreign navy than to the navy for whom it was originally propounded !

Sir Charles Knowles, 1st Baronet (c. 1704-1777) was an officer of the Royal Navy, who saw service during the War of Jenkins' Ear, the wider War of the Austrian Succession, and the Seven Years War. He also briefly served with the Imperial Russian Navy during the Russo-Turkish War. He rose to the rank of Admiral in a long and varied career, crowned with both success, and at times, controversy. He was highly educated, and particularly skilled in building and destroying fortifications. His career was mainly centered around the West Indies, where he commanded ships and squadrons in actions against both Spanish and French ships and settlements. Despite an active naval career that saw him rise to be Rear-Admiral of Great Britain, Knowles found time to devote to his studies, working on translations of foreign scientific studies, and developing his own inventions. His career at sea was blighted however by several failures, which may have been a cause of his move to Russia during the later part of his life to oversee the development of the Russian fleet. In 1743 he wrote An Account of the Expedition to Carthagena, With Explanatory Notes and Observations.

Once a Grand Duke

Alexander lived in Paris when he wrote his memoirs, Once a Grand Duke, which were first published in 1932. It is a rich source of dynastical and court life in Imperial Russia’s last half century, and Alexander also describes time spent as guest of the future Abyssinian Emperor Ras Tafari. “The history of the last fifty turbulent years of the Russian Empire provides only a background, but is not the subject of this book. “In compiling this record of a grand duke’s progress I relied on memory only, all my letters, diaries and other documents having been partly burned by me and partly confiscated by the revolutionaries during the years of 1917 and 1918 in the Crimea.”—Alexander, Grand Duke of Russia, Foreword

The A to Z of the Russo Japanese War

The A to Z of the Russo-Japanese War provides considerable breadth and depth of coverage based on Japanese, Russian, and Western sources. The breadth is accomplished through a wide-ranging introduction, a detailed chronology and an extensive bibliography. The depth comes in the hundreds of entries on military and political leaders, major battles and lesser encounters, tactics and strategy as well as the weaponry and of course the causes and consequences.

The Imperial Japanese Navy of the Russo Japanese War

When the Imperial Japanese Navy destroyed Russia's battle fleet during the Russo-Japanese War, it marked the emergence of Japan as one of the world's major naval powers. Japan's navy had been built up over just two decades, with the IJN acquiring a fleet of modern foreign-built warships. Coupled with the IJN's leadership and high levels of training, this proved enough to destroy the fleet of one of the world's historic naval powers. This book explains in concise detail the IJN's fleet of 1904-05, from its battleships and armored cruisers to the torpedo boats that launched "the first great torpedo attack in history," and outlines the history of the naval campaign against the Russian fleet.
