Being Disabled Becoming a Champion

Being Disabled, Becoming a Champion is an accessible presentation of current European research on the most recent evolutions in sports for people with disabilities, demonstrating knowledge developed from the field of sports practices of people with disabilities. It covers three interrelated themes. First, it covers the different facets of the history of sports organizations set up during the 1950s for athletes with motor or intellectual impairments. The second part focuses on the athletes themselves. Voices are given to the top-level athletes in adapted sports: people with intellectual impairment; the pioneers of wheelchair racing who invented a new discipline, off-road wheelchair racing; and a former Paralympic athlete who has become a researcher and a defender of specific sports practices. Finally, the third part interrogates the way support for disabled people can modify the existing definitions and conceptions of the body, of disability, of what is human, and of sports performance. This is an ideal text for students and researchers studying and working in the areas of Disability Studies, Sport Sciences and Paralympic Studies. This book was originally published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

A World Champion s Guide to Running the Beer Mile

Once you know you can handle the speed of a can, make the transition to bottles. Now we can get into the science of the beer mile. Regardless of your vessel of choice (can or bottle), the key is to get maximum airflow.

A World Champion s Guide to Running the Beer Mile

In June, 2015, Lewis Kent was just an ordinary twenty-one-year-old college kid who liked to run. By December, 2015, just six months later, he had appeared in ESPN, Buzzfeed, Ellen, and dozens of other major outlets. Videos of him running went viral, and he received daily calls from agents. So why all the attention? Simple: He ran the Beer Mile, and he ran it unbelievably fast. The beer mile is a track or road race in which you chug a beer, run a quarter mile, chug another beer, run another quarter mile, chug, run, chug, run: four beers, four laps, no vomiting allowed. “Chug, run, repeat.” If it sounds difficult (but really fun), it’s because it absolutely is. The event first went viral in 2014 when the five-minute barrier was broken. Kent became the world champion and broke the world record in late 2015 with a time of 4 minutes, 47 seconds, just over a minute longer than the world record for the regular mile. After that, he became the world’s first professional Beer Miler, literally being paid for his superhuman ability to run fast and drink quickly. Part memoir, part how-to manual, A World Champion's Guide to Running the Beer Miles is for both serious athletes and recreational runners who love to run, enjoy a drink, and like the idea of a challenge.

A Catholic Scientist Champions the Shroud of Turin

Many conclude from this explanation that the science of pollen analysis cannot prove much about the origin of the Shroud of Turin. But even if it could, we must take such scientific “proof” with a grain of salt.

A Catholic Scientist Champions the Shroud of Turin

The Shroud of Turin is celebrated as one of the holiest and most important relics of Christianity, with millions of pilgrims traveling to see the precious cloth in Italy on the rare occasions it has been displayed. Yet despite its enormous global popularity, the Shroud’s authenticity is not without question. To address lingering uncertainties head-on, celebrated Catholic scientist Dr. Gerard Verschuuren explores and synthesizes the various scientific studies conducted on the Shroud —including those analyzing DNA, blood, carbon, pollen, textile, and anatomical issues — as well as its storied history. He then scrutinizes the motives of the individual scientists performing these studies, the assumptions they employed to arrive at their conclusions, and the instances in which they veered into areas outside the competence of the sciences. After this exhaustive and highly satisfying analysis, Dr. Verschuuren reveals the reasons why he believes the Shroud of Turin to be the actual burial cloth of Jesus Christ, the crucified Savior of mankind. And he celebrates it as a rare instance in which the science and faith communities can meet each other — and agree.
