Vibration Control of Flexible Servo Mechanisms

The ESPRIT project SACODY, carried out between 1987 and 1991, has comprehensively studied the problems linked with the control of lightweight robots. It has succeeded in demonstrating how the implementation of computeraided testing and dynamic modelling techniques enables the improvement of the accuracy of industrial robots while increasing their operational speed. Starting from a background mainly addressing large structures developed for space applications, it has succeeded in transferring and applying a spatial control concept into the field of industrial robotics. This volume reports the achievements of the project, which wascarried out by leading experts from industry and academia within the framework of the first phase of ERSPRIT, the European strategic programme for research and development in information technology of the Commission of the European Communities. SACODY is a French acronym for project 1561, the English title of which is "A high performance Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) robot with on-line dynamic compensation".

Within CIME environments, one continually comes across a multitude of different working practices, network devices, information systems and manufacturing technologies. This heterogeneous environment extends to individual enterprises and can have profound effects on the efficiency and effectiveness of an organisation, and often results in symptoms such as: long product lead times, poor visibility of the product and process status, high product inventory and work-in progress, low data integrity, etc., as well as incurring excessive infrastructure costs. Having to select an appropriate information system to help achieve the business objectives of anyone manufacturing enterprise can be an awesome task. During the 1980s, vendor-independent communications such as MAP (Manu facturing Automation Protocol) and CNMA (Communications Network for Manufacturing Applications) brought standard, open communications to computer controlled industrial devices, but this alone was not enough to satisfy the more demanding requirements of creating and maintaining manufacturing applications. In order to create manufacturing solutions that effectively utilise Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) it is necessary to look beyond the standard communications protocols to how and why applications are developed.

MMS  A Communication Language for Manufacturing

Today's manufacturing environment is characterised by significant change in the way it is able to respond to its business objectives. Companies now face new challenges to meet customer demands including greater flexibility, a wider range of products, higher quality, improved lead time, whilst maintaining _c.ompetitive prices. The changes manifest in each company will differ but, the trend is towards providing a leaner, more responsive organisation. This is reflected in the need for Information Technology (IT) systems to be more integrated across an enterprise and for the systems to be provided on a distributed basis. At the same time it is imperative that the costs associated with these IT systems and the range of skills required by an enterprise to develop and support such systems should be minimal. One way of achieving this objective is to adopt the use of standards. During recent years there has been a lot of activity to standardise the way that manufacturing devices communicate with each other. Considerable progress has been made, thanks not least to the success of the international effort of stand ardisation bodies like ISO, IEEE and IEC, and projects applying standardised protocols like Manufacturing Automation Protocol (MAP), in the USA, Commun ications Network for Manufacturing Applications (CNMA) in Europe and not forgetting Mini-MAP and Fieldbus technology.

DESIGN  SYNTHESIS AND CONTROL OF A MECHANICAL SERVO PRESS  AN INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION

Abstract Due to precision, flexibility, simplicity in construction, easy control, higher speed and lower energy consumptions, servo presses have recently become popular in metal forming applications. Servo press technology combines the advantages of hydraulic and conventional mechanical presses without their drawbacks. This study presents design, construction and demonstration of a servo crank press system for metal forming operations. The research involves kinematics and motion optimization, dynamic modeling, structural design and analysis, servo motor selection, automation and control, and operational performances of the servo press. The press used in this work has a load capacity of 50 ton and stroke capacity of 200 mm. Firstly, optimized trajectories of ram scenarios are generated. Then dynamic modeling using Lagrange approach is presented. Next structural model is constructed, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of press parts are performed within safety limits. A servo motor with a reduction unit is selected based on dynamic model. After that a new automation system is developed, and Cascade Feed-Forward (CasFF) control is applied. Moreover, four motion scenarios (crank, dwell, link, and soft motion) are employed for the performance assessment of press. Finally, the dynamic model is verified by the experimental results. The research study is carried out under support and grant of an industrial project, aiming to provide know-how to industry and researchers.
