WHY RUNNING MATTERS

In this year-long memoir, the celebrated historian Ian Mortimer considers the meaning of running as he approaches his fiftieth birthday. From injuries and frustrated ambitions to exhilaration and empathy, it is a personal and yet universal account of what running means to people, and how it helps everyone focus on what really matters.

Run for Something

It doesn't matter if you live in a red state. It is certainly going to be harder if you live in a place that voted for Trump by fifty points. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't run. In fact, I think it's even more important that you ...

Run for Something

From the email marketing director of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and the co-founder of Run for Something comes an essential and inspiring guide that encourages and educates young progressives to run for local office, complete with contributions from elected officials and political operatives. You’ve been depressed since the night of November 8, 2016. You wore black to work the next morning. You berated yourself for your complacency during the Obama years. You ranted on Twitter. You deleted Twitter. You sent emails to your friends saying, “How can we get more involved?” You listened to Pod Save America. You knitted a pussyhat. You showed up to the Women’s March on Washington. You protested Donald Trump’s executive orders. You called your congressman. You called other people’s congressmen. You set up monthly donations to Planned Parenthood and the ACLU. You reactivated Twitter (begrudgingly). Here’s what you do next: Run for something. To be specific: Run for local office and become the change you want to see in the world. Forget about Congress. Forget about the Senate. Focus on the offices that get the real sh*t done: state legislatures, city councils, school boards, and mayors. It doesn’t matter if you’re not a white man over sixty with an Ivy League law degree. (In fact, it’s better if you’re not!) It doesn’t matter if you don’t understand the first thing about running for office, or never even imagined you would. That’s what this book is for. Amanda Litman, experienced in hard-fought state and national election campaigns, is here to give you guidance as well as wisdom and insight from elected officials and political operatives she interviewed for this book. There are half a million elected officials in the United States. Why can’t you be one of them?

The Art of Running Running for Living

Running for living is an art, a philosophy, that we can reach easily when we are able to focus on what it matters and leave out the elements that could be negative or bad for our health. This book will motivate you to make this discipline part of your lifestyle while giving you the tips to take care of yourself and focus on what matters longterm. In this society, fully occupied with work, absorbed by technology, running is a space for freedom where we can make people exit the virtual world, their homes, their offices, video games and finally take action to create a healthy habbit. Some of the Topics covered in the book: Go running and don ́t die trying Listen to your body, It is always right Learn to run alone The partner who should not fail The ideal pace, your pace The best company to run Starting the first race or competition The distance, you put the limits Decalogue: From the spirit of the good runner The author has run more than 24 street marathons both in Costa Rica and in other countries, in addition to covering distances greater than 50 kilometers in six mountain ultramarathons. Places That Matter

Those who have tested this project have named their grandmother's house, a local library, a school running track, their workplace, a frequented restaurant, and their residence as the place that matters to them.

Places That Matter

Places that Matter asks the reader to identify a place that matters in their life—their home, a place of worship, a park, or some other site that acts as an emotional and physical anchor and connects them to a neighborhood. Then readers are asked: In what ways do I currently support—or fail to support—that neighborhood? Should support be increased? If so, in what ways? Joan Ferrante guides students through a learning experience that engages qualitative and quantitative research and culminates in writing a meaningful plan of action or research brief. Students are introduced to basic concepts of research and are exposed to the experiences of gathering and drawing on data related to something immediate and personal. The class-tested exercises are perfect for courses that emphasize action-based research and social responsibility. The book’s overarching goal is to help students assess their neighborhood’s needs and strengths and then create a concrete plan that supports that neighborhood and promotes its prosperity. Accompanying the book is a facilitator’s companion website to guide action-based research experiences, which includes rubrics that are aligned to common learning objectives and are also designed to make tracking and reporting easier.

Run

This book is about my personal experience during the January 12, 2010, earthquake in Haiti. On January 10, 2010, I traveled from Rhode Island through Boston Logan Airport and through Miami, Florida, and then Haiti. For two consecutive days, I was assigned to preach in the Church of God at Rue Du Centre, Port-au-Prince. Earlier on January 12, I was invited to speak at the same church in the early morning prayer service at 6:00 a.m. I was accompanied by my friend Bishop Habel Cesar Novas, a United States of America army veteran of Dominican background who travels with me on many occasions. I was asked to return the same day at 10:00 a.m., and that service ended at 12:10 p.m.

Progress in Computational Physics of Matter

The aim of the book is to describe some of the recent advances, through computer simulation in a broad sense, in the understanding of the complex processes occurring in solids and liquids. The rapid growth of computer power, including the new parallel processors, has stimulated a ferment of new theoretical and computational ideas, which have been developed in particular by the authors in a pluriennal research project supported by Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) for the development of novel software for large scale computations. The book will cover advances in ab initio (Car-Parrinello) molecular dynamics, quantum monte carlo simulations, self-consistent density functional computation of electronic states, classical molecular dynamics simulation of thermodynamic processes, chemical reactions and transport properties. Besides the description of the results of these techniques in leading edge applications, the book will address specific aspects of the algorithms and software which have been developed by the authors in order to implement in an efficient way the new theoretical advances in these computationally intensive problems. These aspects which are generally not discussed in any detail in the literature, can be of great help for newcomers in the field. Contents:Ab-Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Structural Phase Transitions (P Focher & G Chiarotti)Boson Many-Body Problem: Progress in Variational Monte Carlo Computations (L Reatto)Monte Carlo Variational Theory for Fermions (M H Kalos & L Reatto)Recent Developments of Device Simulation Tools for Parallel Processing (M Saraniti & P Lugli)Simulation of Classical and Quantum Activated Processes in the Condensed Phase (G Ciccotti et al.)‘Ab- Initio” Calculations of Electronic Properties of Metallic Solid Solutions (E Bruno et al.)Ab-Initio Calculation of the Electronic (Valence and Core) and Optical Properties of Interfaces (S Ossicini & O Bisi) Readership: Condensed matter physicists, materials science researchers and chemical physicists. keywords: “This is a very good book containing some important approaches to Computational Physics in Condensed Matter. It offers readers pointed explanations on Computational Methods and its application, at the most appropriate stages.” Bulletin of Japan Physical Society

Size Matters Not

Published to coincide with his highly anticipated new sitcom – a mockumentary follow-up to Extras from the pens of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant – Size Matters Not is the surprising and hilarious story of the world’s biggest little actor. When Nana Davis heard an advert on the radio seeking small people for the third Star Wars movie little did she know it was a moment that would transform her tiny grandson’s life. Aged only eleven and just two-feet-eleven inches in height, Warwick went on to make his screen debut as Wicket the Ewok in 1983’s box-office smash Return of the Jedi. It was the beginning of a career that would see him star in some of the biggest films of the last thirty years. Still just three-foot-six, Warwick owes his success to a boundless optimism. His one-in-a-million genetic condition may have opened doors through which other actors couldn’t fit, but it has also led to trials and tragedy – from the seemingly mundane challenge of supermarket shopping, to the sometimes heartbreaking story of his struggle to start a family. By turns funny and moving, Size Matters Not is a big story from a big man, who just happens to be very, very short.
