Philosophical Reflections on Neuroscience and Education explores conceptual and normative questions about the recent programme which aims to underpin education with neuroscientific principles. By invoking philosophical ideas such as Bennett and Hacker's mereological fallacy, Wittgenstein's the first-person/third-person asymmetry principle and the notion of irreducible/constitutive uncertainty, William H. Kitchen offers a critique of the whole-sale adoption of neuroscience to education. He explores and reviews the role that neuroscience has started to play in educational policy and practice, and whether or not such a role is founded in coherent conceptual reasoning. Kitchen critically analyses the role which neuroscience can possibly play within educational discussions, and offers paradigmatic examples of how neuroscientific approaches have already found their way into educational practice and policy documents. By invoking the philosophical work primarily of Wittgenstein, he argues against the surge of neuroscientism within educational discourse and offers to clarify and elucidate core concepts in this area which are often misunderstood.

This book is a collection of contributions written by philosophers and scientists active in different fields, such as mathematics, logics, social sciences, computer sciences and linguistics. They comment on and discuss various parts of and subjects and propositions introduced in the Handbook of Analytical Philosophy of Medicine from Kadem Sadegh-Zadeh, published by Springer in 2012. This volume reports on the fruitful exchange and debate that arose in the fuzzy community upon the publication of the Handbook. This was not only very much appreciated by the community but also seen as a critical starting point for beginning a new discussion. The results of this discussion, which involved many different perspectives from science and the humanities and was warmly encouraged by Kadem Sadegh-Zadeh himself, are accurately reported in this volume, which is intended to be a critical companion to Kadem Sadegh-Zadeh ́s handbook. Rudolf Seising is currently an adjunct researcher at the European Centre for Soft Computing in Mieres, Asturias (Spain) and a college lecturer at the Faculty of History and Arts, at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (Germany). Marco Elio Tabacchi is currently the Scientific Director of the Italian National Research & Survey Organization Demopolis, and a research assistant in the Soft Computing Group at University of Palermo (Italy).

Wittgenstein on the Human Spirit provides a new understanding of Wittgenstein¿s discourse as an insightful philosophy of culture, pursued through self-reflection. It offers an edifying perspective on the conceptual underpinnings of culture as a shared expressive spiritual form of life. The ideas investigated in it are highly relevant for discussions in philosophy, aesthetics, anthropology, and cultural studies. The book embraces three studies: The Spirit of Jews, The Spirits of Culture and Civilization, and The Common Spirit of Human Beings. The first discusses Wittgenstein's remarks about Jews, focusing on their place within his philosophical thinking, self-reflection, and European discourse about culture and Jews. It shows how overcoming the anti-Semitic attitude implicit in them set off the major change in his philosophy. The second discusses Wittgenstein¿s reflections on the ¿deterioration of culture¿ in the modern period, showing how they are related to his remarks about following rules. The third discusses Wittgenstein¿s insights regarding the symbolic nature of myth, magic and religion. It suggests that modern human beings and those of ancient cultures possess a common expressive spiritual nature. This enables us to understand expressive practices in other cultures without interpretation. Nonetheless religious belief during the modern period is problematic. Yuval Lurie is Professor Emeritus at Ben Gurion Unversity in Beer Sheva, Israel, where he has taught philosophy since 1973. He received his philosophy degrees from Tel Aviv University and Cornell University. He has published articles in philosophical journals on philosophy of mind, culture, ethics, and Wittgenstein's philosophy. Among his books are Cultural Beings: Reading the Philosophers of Genesis (2000); Tracking the Meaning of Life: A Philosophical Journey (2006); and Mavo le-kisme ha-filosofyah: etikah u-musar (Introduction to the Magic of Philosophy: Ethics and Morality, 2007, Hebrew)

Understanding Wittgenstein's Tractatus provides an accessible and yet novel discussion of all the major themes of the Tractatus. The book starts by setting out the history and structure of the Tractatus. It then investigates the two main dimensions of the early Wittgenstein's thought, corresponding to the division between what language can say by means of its propositions and what language can only show. It goes on to discuss picture theory, logical atomism, extensionality, truth-functions and truth-operations, semantics, metalogic and mathematics, solipsism and value, metaphysics, and finally, Wittgenstein's idea of the duty of maintaining silence. Frascolla also proposes a new interpretation of the ontology of the Tractatus. Based on the identification of objects with qualia, the argument put forward in the book challenges the currently prevalent ideas of the ‘New Wittgenstein'. The paradoxical nature of the Tractatus itself, and the theme of "throwing away the ladder", are thus revisited in a new key. Understanding Wittgenstein's Tractatus is essential reading for anyone wishing to further their insight into one of the most influential works of twentieth-century philosophy.

Philosophy has given us insights into the reflections of thinkers on such subjects as God, mankind, the world, and the possibility of knowing ultimate reality. The processes of reasoning and the conclusions of logic are often intensely fascinating. Dr. Geisler reminds us, however, that the premises and the arguments of philosophy are often faulty, leading to a wholly inadequate view of knowledge and revelation. He reiterates Paul's warning to the Colossian Christians: See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy. The contributors to this volume show how the basic presuppositions of many philosophers lead to a denial of a divine, inerrant revelation. The views of some modern theologians regarding revelation find their roots in such deceptive philosophy. Chapter titles are: -'Inductivism, Materialism, and Rationalism: Bacon, Hobbes, and Spinoza' - Norman L. Geisler -'Skepticism: Hume' - Gary R. Habermas -'Agnosticism: Kant' - W. David Beck -'Transcendentalism: Hegel' - Winfried Corduan -'Existentialism: Kierkegaard' - E. Herbert Nygren -'Atheism: Nietzsche' - Terry L. Miethe -'Noncognitivism: Wittgenstein' - John S. Feinberg -'Mysticism: Heidegger' - Howard M. Ducharne, Jr.
